About this ebook

Speech has two aspects, knowledge (phonology) and expression (articulation). During the development of phonology, children make systematic errors, targeting certain phonological element classes, called phonological error patterns which later on are modified and suppressed. These patterns may be normal or unusual, and are classified as syllable structure, substitution and assimilation error patterns. Assessment of these error patterns by either spontaneous sample speech or single word test is a golden step for determination of age-appropriate, delayed, gross-included and unusual patterns to help in diagnosis of phonological disorders which comprise the largest group of speech sound disorders. Difference between phonology and articulation; normal speech development; overview of phonological error patterns; approach to diagnosis of speech sound disorders are discussed in this book. This book is a guide for phoniatrician [https://www.google.com/search?safe=strict&q=phoniatrician&spell=1&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwizhPDV0s_fAhUGWxUIHWKwDDYQBQgqKAA]s and speech-language pathologists for the better understanding of phonological error patterns and comprehensive diagnosis of speech sound disorders.

    Preface

This book is a book on clinical phonology aiming to provide a clinical view of phonological error patterns to simplify the diagnosis of speech sound disorders for phoniatricians and speech-language pathologists. Indeed, before talking about phonological error patterns, firstly, readers should be familiar with the dual nature of speech (phonology and articulation) and the normal speech development, thus Chapter 1 discusses the difference between phonology and articulation. Chapter 2 describes the normal speech development and its theories, Chapter 3 is an overview of phonological error patterns reaching Chapter 4 which describes the approach to diagnosis of speech sound disorders.

In my first work with phonological error patterns for my master thesis’s research, I found it hard to understand and interpret phonology, may be because it was the first time to interact with this information, as I am a physician who studied the medical view of human body not the linguistic view of his brain. Later on, after a lot of readings and applying the known information on many cases, I reached an easy practical view of diagnosis of speech sound disorders hoping to deliver this information to my colleagues in this interesting field and help the unintelligible children to be easily diagnosed and treated to communicate freely with their words.

My experience with phonological error patterns taught me that the Almighty Allah has created everything within a system, even the misarticulations of children during acquisition of their speech are systematic and have normal physiology to reach certain milestones. A deviation from that, indicates that the child has a disorder and is need of treatment. Simply, language including its four domains (semantics, grammar (morphology, syntax), phonology and pragmatics) is like any organ in the body and has a normal path
