“On average, a 12-month-old child should be saying two to three words besides ‘mamma’ or ‘dada’,” says Cape Town speech and language therapist Corli Hanekom. However, each child develops at their own pace, so while some children learn to talk early, others may be late catching on. The right stimulation at each developmental age will encourage this process to unfold.
