Her Cyborg Captor - Anne Kane

    hearts.

    Chapter One

Ryker ran the female’s image through the facial recognition software stored in his brain. No doubt about it, he had the right militant protestor. As a mercenary, it wasn’t like a mistake would ruin his reputation, but pride demanded he hold up his end of a contract to the best of his ability. Sometimes a mark would try to escape by throwing a decoy in his path. Dumb idea. They didn’t realize who they were up against. Trying to fool him with a look-alike was about as smart as trying to outrun his state-of-the-art spaceship with an interplanetary shuttlecraft. Waste of time.

His memory circuits also pegged her as a human he’d had some interaction with in the past. Unfortunately, those circuits had suffered some minor damage during his last battle so he wasn’t able to retrieve all the details of their interaction, but he knew it had been carnal, consensual, and very satisfying.

Of course, she’d never recognize this scarred body as one she’d spent an enjoyable evening of mutual pleasure with. Which was fine. He was no longer that idealistic young soldier.

He studied the female. Young. Much younger than he’d anticipated when he agreed to the contract, and pleasing to the eye. He liked his women to have some shape and this one had curves in all the right places. He felt an unexpected reaction in his gut, one he hadn’t felt in age, not since the battle scars that had left him more machine than man.

He’d expected an animal rights activist to be older and tougher. In his mind, he’d pictured someone who cared about the Battle Rats because she didn’t have a male around to keep her more appropriately entertained. This female, with her outrageous blue hair and swaying hips would have no problem convincing a male to partner with her. His cock hardened a little more as he imagined her naked and begging him to pleasure her.

    Ryker shook his head.

It didn’t matter. Whatever her motivation in interfering in the fight for the Battle Rats’ homeworld, it wasn’t his concern. The contract he’d agreed to was, and he intended to cash in on it. His clients wanted this curvy little female out of the way and off the Battle Rats’ planet for the next moon cycle. He intended to make that happen.

Stepping up to the main view screen, he turned off surveillance mode and set the autopilot to keep the ship in orbit around the small moon that the female was using as a base for her activities. He gave her credit for setting her operation up on the moon, rather than the planet itself. She’d be able to see any incoming ships long before they could be detected from the ground and warn the Battle Rats. An invading force would not have the advantage of surprise.

He had to admit a tiny part of him admired her for her dedication. The Battle Rats had been on the planet long before man or Cyborg were in the picture, and if precious metals hadn’t been found beneath its surface, they could have remained there undisturbed for millennia to come. They kept to themselves, asking nothing of the human Alliance or the Ruling Council of Terras Five. Those that felt an urge to travel were masters at hiding in plain sight and rarely interfered with humans or Cyborgs. Unless that is, someone they’d become attached to was threatened. There were rumors of the little creatures transforming into terrifying fighting machines to defend someone they’d adopted as their own, hence the label of Battle Rats.

Idly, he wondered if any of the furry little critters had ever encountered the Tra’an. The cold-blooded sentients, often referred to as lizardmen, had been keeping to their own side of the galaxy for a while now, but he didn’t trust that to last forever. If they thought they had a chance of expanding their territory, they wouldn’t hesitate to rain mayhem and chaos down on humans and Cyborgs alike. Peaceful coexistence for the sake of peace just didn’t figure into their view of the universe.

He strapped on his weapons belt over his flight suit. Time to get moving.

    * * *

Keily’s fingers flashed across the keyboard as she composed a message to her allies on the Alliance’s Supreme Court. It had been a long and exhausting fight, but it looked like her hard work was about to pay off. She’d managed to raise enough awareness among the citizenry of the Alliance that the courts could no longer ignore the Battle Rats, or pretend that the little creatures were mere animals without the rights granted all sentient beings.

Battle Rats were the only sentient beings residing on the planet designated as Kepler Seven Six Nine since recorded time began and as such, they had a hereditary claim to its resources. All of the resources, both above and below the surface. Very little was known about the creatures since they rarely interacted with the rest of the beings in the galaxy. They went about their lives quietly, and for the most part, ignored and were ignored by human and Cyborg alike. Since their society didn’t buy or sell anything, traders traditionally ignored Kepler Seven Six Nine entirely. Until that is, a roving miner realized just what lay beneath the surface of Kepler Seven Six Nine.

    Emeritite.

Emeritite commanded the highest price of any mineral in the galaxy. Extremely hard when applied to the outer skins of space-faring vessels, it resisted damaging gamma rays and direct hits by most weapons arrays. Those attributes, added to its ability to withstand temperatures in the thousands of degrees, made it the most coveted substance in the shipbuilding sectors. Until now, the only known source had been an asteroid field on the far fringes of the Alliance territories. The asteroids were small and scattered, making mining a slow and expensive proposition. Independent miners with their own equipment collected and sold the small amounts they managed to gather for prices approaching a king’s ransom.

Due to both technical and logistical reasons, it wasn’t feasible to set up a large-scale operation in the volatile field of ever moving space rocks. The risks were just too high, even for the anticipated returns. Consequently, only the very elite of the galaxy could afford to have their ships outfitted with the coveted metal.

The find on Kepler Seven Six Nine could change that forever if the Conglomerate managed to gain control of the planet. It was a big if. In order to set up a commercial mining operation, they would have to convince the Alliance and the Cyborg ruling council that their interests were more important than the Battle Rats’ reclusive way of life.

She hit the Send button and settled back into her seat, a feeling of accomplishment washing over her as her message, complete with
