Destination Me - Daria Di
FAMILY AND BACKGROUND
In order to get to know a person better, you need to be aware of his/her background.
So here is mine...
My parents were born and raised in the USSR. They met each other at a concert where they were actually performing.
My mom is a professional dancer and my dad is a musician and singer - they both have very creative personalities. Getting their education earlier on in the performing field helped them to progress far enough and achieve their goals and dreams at our theater.
After I was born, my mom took maternity leave for about a year, and then she went back to her dancing career which required a lot of time, effort and practice. She got into the ballet group in my hometown and was performing shows quite often.
I was growing up with my grandma and my grandpa up until I was 7. My mom put me in a bunch of activities like gymnastics, swimming, and music school. Luckily, my grandparents were active enough to take me places in those days.
Childhood memories are important because those experiences will forever be tattooed upon the hallways of your mind. You may decide to revisit those memories when trying to figure yourself out, or you may not. Personally, it helped me to look at them.
A year ago, I asked myself this question: What do I love to do, what makes me happy?
In response to my question, one of the things that started to come back to me were some of my childhood memories. I recalled times of pure joy, of being silly and happy as a child. And it was these memories that brought me to a closer understanding of who I am now. How? Simply because I was feeling content with myself being busy and trying out different things.
Some people used to say to my mom It’s too much for the kid to handle, she is only 5 and doing so many activities is not a good thing!
But she didn’t listen and kept me in all of them (big thank you to my grandparents for taking me to all those places), which I’m so grateful for.
My mom let me try out a bunch of different areas - swimming, art school, music school, gymnastics and I got stuck with one - music school, which I graduated from 8 years later, with piano as my major.
My mom and dad both came from very hardworking families and it meant a lot to me - it still does mean a lot to me - how they allowed me to experience so many different things, so early in my life.
They always used to tell me that there is no point in comparing your life with that of others.
What they meant by saying this is that we all have a conservative mentality - you work hard, and you get it! You don’t work hard, then you don’t get it. We were living a very simple lifestyle, eating food from our garden, renting a 1 bedroom apartment until I moved out (I was 16) and always, always working hard.
They dedicated themselves to each other and to me, and everything was all about THE FAMILY. My dad always said, Happiness is the derivative of your choices, work and mindset!
Until this day, my background defines who I am. My grandparents and parents have built the strong foundation in me and nothing, nothing shakes my confidence these days.
They showed me how to work hard, how to value your precious time and appreciate simple things in life that you already have. The only thing that I can add to all the wisdom I have been given is that these days you have to work even harder and be capable of the skill of listening to yourself.
I’m so grateful for my childhood experiences. I had a chance to try out a bunch of different things. It seemed to me that I was everywhere but I wasn’t good enough to succeed in certain field.
I was studying very hard and kept myself busy all these years without realizing what I truly love to do. I was just occupied with life in general, trying myself out and looking for new experiences, but the inner voice within was asking me What do you want? What’s your purpose in life? How do you see yourself in 10 years? Who are you?
How can you make this world better?" And... I didn’t know the answer, I wasn’t satisfied with my choices and tryouts because there wasn’t any
