Chapter 1 – Flank Opening Repertoire
Flank Opening Overview
A00 Grob 1.g4 and Borg 1...g5
The Grob 1.g4 is almost sound for White. However the Borg 1...g5 (Grob backwards) is dangerous for Black to play being a move behind. Masters play these for fun, especially in blitz.
A02 From Gambit 2.fxe5
Birds Openings From Gambit 1.f4 e5 2.fxe5 is a sharp tactical line where Black sacrifices a pawn to attack. The theory teeters between equality with compensation and a White advantage.
A29 English 4 Knights 1...e5
English Opening Four Knights 1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.Nf3 Nc6 is a solid method of development. The knights can be played in any order. Some lines resemble a Sicilian Defence reversed.
A45 Trompowsky 2.Bg5
The Trompowsky 2.Bg5 provides White with a complete method of play against 1.d4 Nf6. White threatens to take the knight and double the Black f-pawns. Black can either allow it or prevent it.
A69 Benoni Four Pawns 7.f4
The Benoni Defence Four Pawns 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 e6 4.Nc3 exd5 5.cxd5 d6 6.e4 g6 7.f4 gives White a big center after. Some lines can be reached via the E76 Kings Indian Four Pawns 5.f4.
A83 Dutch Staunton 2.e4
White avoids 1.d4 f5 2.c4 main lines with 2.e4 Staunton Gambit. White attacks the Black weak points. White often wins quickly. Black can pick up a pawn, and that pawn is worth some real risk.
A97 Dutch Defence with ...e6
The unbalanced Classical Variation of the Dutch Defence is fully playable. White plans to establish a space advantage with better bishops. Black counter attacks the center, queenside or kingside.
