Adventures With Evil Spirits - Dr. Joseph J. Ghosh.

    SPIRITUALISM

Spiritualism is a very mysterious subject and at the same time it is very wide, deep and difficult, hence it is not meant for all. Only those who possess spiritual powers can learn it, and acquire powers enough to use it profitably for the Glory of God and for the good of suffering humanity.

I propose to deal with only two of its aspects, viz. communication with the spirits in the other world, and secondly the healing of spirit possession by casting out evil spirits.

    Spirit Communication

Whether a spirit which has left its body can be called back, is one of the most important questions. According to the Theory of Transmigration of Soul, Hindus do not believe in spirit communuication. They hold that a spirit which has taken birth again can not be called as it is already in this world in some person’s body. According to Islam, a spirit ceases to exist after death till the day of resurrection. It is a general belief among the Christians that spirits after death sleep and rest from their labour till the day of Lord when they will rise again. Spirit communication, therefore, by the Christian masses is considered a farce and a hallucination, and seances are frauds and exception. In spite of all this, there is a very great natural longing in the hearts of men to know what happened to their dear ones who had left this world. To affirm that spirit which has left this world cannot come here is unreasonable, as from the World of God we learn that the Lord Jesus Christ and His disciples were able to raise the dead. They called back the spirit which had left the body again into the same body. On the day of crucifixion the graves were opened and the spirits of some of the saints appeared to the people. On the Mount of Transfiguration Lord Jesus Christ called the spirit of Moses and Elias, and they talked with Him about His coming passion and death. Spiritualists maintain that they do not possess the power of calling a spirit back into the body which it has left at the time of death, but they can ask a spirit to take possession of the living body of a medium.

Once I was called to see an Indian Christian girl who was very ill at Naini. By the time I arrived there she had just passed away. In order to comfort the bereaved and sorrowing mother I told her that the spirit of the child was still in that room and if she wanted I could call it in the body of the medium. The mother said, Doctor, do have pity on me and ask the spirit to come back again just for a short time into her own dead body. I told her that was impossible, as spirits cannot enter into a dead body.

    Necessity of Calling A Spirit

    (1) To hear even a word from the spirit of our dear departed one is a great comfort and solace to the bereaved and broken heart.

Once a Hindu Bengali young man told me that his young wife had died a few days ago. At the time of her death his father and mother both were present by the bedside. She was looking at her husband and wanted to speak to him and he also wanted to speak to her, but the cruel custom did not allow husband and wife to speak to each other in the presence of their parents, so she died without saying a word to her. He felt very miserable, and cursed such a cruel custom. He wanted me to call the spirit of his wife so that he might be able to talk to her.

    (2) It is quite a natural desire in the human heart to find out what happens to the spirit of the dear ones after leaving this world, and also to find out what the spirit is doing and what is the condition of the spirit.

    (3) Unbelievers in the life after death are at once convinced of the After Life, when they hear the voice of their dear ones who have left this world.

    (4) Some spirits are earth-bound because they have left some important work unfinished or some very strong desire unfulfilled. If these spirits are called and the cause of their being earth-bound is removed, they are made free and they can make spiritual progress unhindered on a higher plane.

    (5) When our dear ones are dead and gone and time blots out their memory and they are never remembered they feel hurt at our indifference, but if they are prayed for, remembered and sometimes called, they feel greatly delighted and edified.

    (6) Difficult and intricate problems of life are often solved with the help of some mighty spirit. Personally I have often been helped in my difficulties by the spirits of my dear ones in Heavenly planes.

A friend of mine asked me to find out from the spirit of his young daughter who had passed away suddenly what matter should be inscribed on the tomb of her body. The spirit came and suggested an inspiring and suitable verse from the Bible.

    (7) There are some spiritualists who want to find out about the future from the spirits of their dear ones. I am not in favour of this practice, as we are not sure what powers these spirits possess and how much they know of the future and how far they are allowed to impart that knowledge to us. Of course, they can prepare us and inform us of the impending danger.

    The Medium

A medium is a very important factor in all communication with the spirit world. As an instrument is absolutely necessary for all telegraphic and wireless communication, so also the medium is absolutely necessary for all spirit communication.

A medium is a person who possesses supernormal magnetic powers within him. Such a person is sensitive and negative and can be easily mesmerised. He is also clairvoyant and clairaudient. He can see the spirits and can hear their voices. He can also see the distant scene.

As a medium possesses magnetic power he can attract spirits. The medium concentrates on and calls a particular spirit. This spirit is attracted towards him and comes to him. The medium sees the spirit, recognises it and holds communication. The spirit also may take possession of the medium by entering into his body and by speaking through the medium. A spiritualist ought to possess mediumistic power so that he can call the spirits himself without the help of a medium.

    Methods of Calling A Spirit

    (1) A clairvoyant and clairaudient medium can call a spirit by fixing his mind and concentrating his thoughts upon a particular spirit whom he wants to call. The spirit comes in a short time and says, Here I am. By his clairvoyant powers, the medium can then identify the spirit who stands in front of him.

    (2) The simplest and easiest method of invoking a spirit is to make a circle round a three-legged round table, and lay hands upon the table which turns, moves and lifts up its legs. This is the sign that the spirit has come.

    (3) Spirits are also invoked by means of Planchatte which moves and writes and gives messages.

    (4) Automatic writing - A sensitive medium takes a pencil or a pen in his hand and sits passive with his hand on the paper. A spirit comes, controls the mind and the hand of the medium, and moves the hand, so the hand writes automatically. This method is very dangerous as the medium comes under the direct control of the spirit which, if evil, can do a great deal of harm to the mind and may take complete possession of the medium and refuse to leave him. Such mediums may have to spend their days in a lunatic asylum. It is very dangerous when a man is controlled by a female evil spirit. She in a very short time can ruin his body and mind completely.

    Dangers of Spiritualism

Evil spirits are a great source of danger. These evil spirits are spirits of men and women who lived deliberately wicked lives in this world, who wallowed in the dirt and mire of sin and all kinds of evil deeds. After their death, they are earth-bound and still live in sin. Spirits of drunkards try to take possession of drunkards in this world, make them drink more and more, till they are dead drunk; in this manner the spirits of drunkards satisfy their craving for drinks.

Lovers of money remain earth-bound with their money in this world and never allow anybody to touch that money.

Murderers take possession of men, women and children and kill them, thus satisfying their blood-thirstiness. These evil spirits wander about in darkness and are found everywhere. Whereas and whenever seances are held they are attracted and take possession of the medium and sitters. They deliver false messages and mislead the sitters. The Word of God tells us clearly again and again not to have any dealings with the evil spirits. Those who have dealing with evil spirits are sure to be ruined body, soul and spirit.

HOW TO CAST OUT EVIL SPIRITS

The power to cast out evil spirits is a special gift of God. We read in Mark III: 14 & 15 that Lord Christ gave powers to His twelve disciples to cast out devils, i.e. unclean spirits, and further we read that He sent out 70 disciples with powers to heal the sick and to cast out devils. This is a special gift which our Lord gives to His followers to be used for His glory and for relieving suffering humanity. We read that once the Apostles were not able to cast the evil spirits out of a boy who was very grievously tormented. When the disciples asked our Lord the cause of their failure He said unto them, This cometh not but by prayers and fasting.

It was some 20 years ago after death of my wife that I took to spiritualism. Formerly, I was only a mesmerist and used my mesmerism in healing the sick and in helping my students in getting rid of their bad habits, viz. smoking, stammering, laziness etc., but I fought shy of spiritualism. This terrible tragedy pursuaded me to find out about the life after death to be in touch with dear ones who have left this world.

For years after the death of my former wife, I lived a retired life and spent most of my time in prayer, meditation, fasting, and reading the Word of God. Thus gradually this power came to me.

Method of Casting Out Evil Spirits

My method of casting out evil spirits is very simple. I must first find out whether or not a patient is under the control of an evil spirit. For that purpose I utilize the clairvoyant power of a medium. I mesmerise him in order to strengthen and bring out the latent clairvoyant powers. The medium simply touches the hand of the patient and at once finds out the evil influence. If the spirit is not there it is summoned simply by the power of concentration and attraction. As soon as the spirit comes it reports its presence by saying, I am here. The medium sees the spirit. The spirit is ordered to enter the body of the medium. It obeys at once and as it enters the body of the medium under mesmeric trance the body of the medium sways to and fro. The spirit in the body of the medium is imprisoned and is completely under my control. It cannot leave the body without my permission. I lay my hands upon the head of the medium and pray to God to burn the evil spirit with the fire of hell which is the only punishment for the devil mentioned in the Bible. As I pray the evil spirit sways the body of the medium to and fro and cries, I am burning. I am burning. Let me go. I leave the patient for good. When I ask the spirit whence the fire comes, it says it comes from my hands and from my prayers. The spirit is thus punished and when it takes away all its influence from the patient and promises to leave him for good it is released. Some wicked spirits have to be punished more than once before they leave their victims for good and never trouble them again.

    Objection Against Spiritualism By Christians.

Spiritualism is really a sacred subject. It is also inspiring and edifying. It helps to strengthen our faith in God’s Word as it helps to remove many difficulties which without the knowledge of spiritualism cannot be explained. It is therefore very surprising that a large mass of Christians, both the clergy and the laity, are bitterly opposed to spiritualism. They look down upon it with great contempt and consider it a filthy and detestable subject which should not be even touched. Some of these Christians when they came to know that I was a spiritualist most indignantly said that I was not a Christian. These Christians who are opposed to spiritualism can be divided into two classes:

In the first class I include all those who do not believe in the existence of evil spirits, or devils as they are called in the Word of God. They do not believe in the existence of evil spirits, nor do they believe in the simple and plain words of God, but they most deliberately try to turn and twist the plain Word of God and interpret it according to their whims and fancies. In a way they accuse our Lord of telling lies and cheating deliberately. Their narrow-minded bigotry and downright foolishness do not allow them to see the clear truth demonstrated before their eyes.

In the second class I include those Christians who take their stand on DEUT. XVIII. 10, 11, 12.

    10. There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.

    11. Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits or a wizards, or a necromancer.

    12. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord the God doth drive them out from before thee."

They say that spiritualism is out and out dealing with evil and familiar spirits. Here these Christians are totally wrong as they do not understand spiritualism. Spiritualism is not dealing with evil spirits. There are witches, wizards, necromancers and others who practise black arts. These evil doers manage to have their control over evil spirits which carry out the orders of their masters and bring much gain to them (vide Acts XVI:16).

And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying. But Christian spiritualists have no dealings with evil spirits neither do they have under their control any evil familiar spirits which carry out their orders. This prejudice against spiritualism based upon the wrong interpretation of the Word of God is so deeply engraved in the mind of such a large number of Christians that it is very difficult to root it out and convince them of the truth that spiritualism is not against the teachings of the Bible. Still in times of difficulty and distress when they are tormented by evil spirits they come to me and are cured.

SIX ENCOUNTERS WITH EVIL SPIRITS IN 1925-26

    (1) Treasure Underneath Subterranean Rooms

A Hindu lady who was suffering from hysteria was under my mesmeric treatment. In the first week she made very great improvement but after that the improvement stopped. It was on Friday, the 18th September, 1925, that at the request of her husband I went to inspect his house and see if there was anything there. I took with me three mediums, namely Mr. Gopinath, Moulvi Nurul Hasan, (both teachers of the Modern High School) and Het Ram Joshi, a student of the Second Year Intermediate Class. The house was an old building built about 200 years ago. It was used as a Court by the present owner’s ancestors who were Government officials under the Muslim regime. We sat in the public audience hall and there I mesmerised these mediums and sent their spirits separately to make a search of the house. They found that there were two subterranean rooms which were occupied by two evil spirits—a male and a female. The male spirit would not move, but the female spirit troubled the lady of the house. While I was treating the lady, Nurul Hasan and Het Ram were taken possession of by those spirits. They told us that they were earth-bound and were guarding the treasure buried under the subterranean rooms. They were advised to give away the money, repent for their sins and turn to God, but they said that there was a curse upon the money, that they could not part with it, and they must remain in prison there for a long time. They were severely punished for taking possession of my mediums without my permission, and were then released but they promised to come whenever they were wanted.

    (2) Story of a Muslim Saint

In a city not far from Allahabad there lives a well known old Mohammedan saint about 80 years old. He is very highly spoken of for his great spiritual and miraculous powers, and has a large following all over these Provinces. Early in August, 1925, I went to see him. He received me very kindly and prophesied about me several things which did not come to pass. On my return to Allahabad I sent the spirit of Moulvi Nurul Hasan who knew the saint very well to find out what spiritual powers this saint possessed. When the Moulvi’s spirit reached the house of the saint he found the door guarded by a horrible evil spirit who would not allow him to enter in. He had a terrible fight with the evil spirit, subdued him and brought him over to me. Then I learnt from the evil spirit that this reputed saint had this evil spirit under his control and whatever mysterious powers he exercised was through this evil spirit. He said that his knowledge about the future was always not correct and that he instructed the saint with what he knew. Sometimes they proved correct and sometimes they were all wrong. I wrote to the Mohammedan saint about this evil spirit but he never replied to my queries. In one of his letters he only said that his house was surrounded by 150 evil spirits, while he was repeating some spell and that he had no sleep the whole night.

    (3) A Thief and Murderer

Aley Ahmad, a student of Class VIII, came to me on 10th February, 1926. He wanted his spirit to be sent home to Jais as he wanted to visit his people. I put him under mesmeric sleep and went out of the room for a few minutes. When I returned I found him possessed. The spirit gave the following account of himself. He said that he was an evil spirit living on the banks of the Yamuna. That afternoon when he was lying there this boy trod upon him so he followed the boy and came here with him to have revenge upon him. His name was Gulab and he belonged to the Kshattriya caste. He was a thief and murderer. All his stolen property he had buried there and he was earth-bound guarding all the time his treasure which he would not like to show to anybody. He would not repent for his sins and would not turn to God. He was punished severely and then he promised that he would not trouble the boy any more. He was then allowed to go away.

    (4) Goat-offering

Newal Kishore, a student of Class X, wanted to see his father who died some years ago. I called the spirit of his father and the boy saw
