    About the Author

    Nefertiti

Nefertiti, Queen of Egypt, gazed out at the vast lands she ruled beside her husband, King Akhenaten. As the eve of her fortieth year was upon her, she found herself thinking of her life and the path it had taken. She was in her seventeenth year when she became Queen, and only five years into her husband’s reign he displaced Amon as Egypt’s chief God in favor of Aten, the Sun God, and brought about radical change. It wasn’t always easy, but in time, the people came to accept it.

As the Great Royal Wife, she was his first, his favored consort, and to him she bore six daughters. When she failed to give him a son to take the throne upon his death, he took other wives, causing strife to enter into her heart.

He was good to her but part of her wanted so much more. She knew nothing of love between a husband and wife, but the young girl she once was longed for it. Often, when she would venture into the streets of Egypt, to tend to their people, she would often feel envious of the closeness she saw between the commoners.

As the sun began to set, a sigh escaped her and she turned away from the red glow that was cast over the city. One finely painted brow arched when she noticed the King’s Steward approaching her.

My Queen. Pharaoh bids you a good eve. He has sent a gift to show his affection for the Great Royal Wife.

In the steward’s hands lay a small box. Nefertiti took it from him with a quiet ‘Thank you’ and watched him leave. She carried the box to her chambers and set it upon her bed. Her fingers traced the intricate details on the box before she finally opened it.

Nestled in a bed of silk lay a golden chain. At the end of the chain rested a blood red amulet. She felt drawn to the gem in a way that puzzled her. Candlelight flickered across the surface and as she gazed into it, she was overcome with the need to pick it up.

The moment she touched it, a hum filled her. Her breathing increased and she felt warmth envelop her. As if they had a mind of their own, her hands lifted and draped the chain over her neck. As the amulet settled between her breasts, the warmth intensified and a red glow filled the chamber.

When the light increased to the point it was painful, she closed her eyes and felt herself fall.

    Ronin

Grease stained his hands as Ronin reached for a wrench to tighten the final bolt on the engine he’d just replaced in a 1969 Camaro. The car was a sweet-ass ride and he envied the owner. Of course, if he wanted to take it for a spin all he had to do was ask since it belonged to his best friend, and Brother in Arms, Jagger. There wasn’t anyone else Jagger trusted his ‘baby’ with.

    Yo, Ronin, you almost done?

Yeah, yeah. I told you I just had one last bolt to tighten. Fuck, you’d think I’d had it for months instead of just days.

You know Lola is my baby. I miss my girl.

Ronin snorted. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you had an unhealthy relationship with it.

He dodged the towel Jagger threw at him with a chuckle.

    You are such an asshole.

Like you’ve got room to talk, brother? He wiped his hands off and closed the hood. She’s all done. We can square up later.

Sure thing. You coming to the clubhouse tonight?

Yeah, after I drop Lizzie off with my mom. She’s been begging to visit her Nana all week.

    Cool. See you later, Brother.

He watched as Jagger pulled out of the garage as he put his tools away and went to lock up. Carrying the trash out to the dumpsters behind the garage, he stumbled over someone lying on the ground and had to catch himself against the side of the dumpster. The bag flew out of his hand and split when it hit the ground, spilling it’s contents everywhere.
