    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

    Chapter 1

FROM A HIGH ABANDONED building, a quarterback of the local arena football team hung off the roof by his legs. Loud screams echoed from his mouth and ricocheted off the buildings below.

Ted Monitor, with his hands in pockets, stepped to the edge of the roof, rotating a toothpick around in his mouth. He had a triangular shaped, bird-like face with bushy sideburns and long, silky black hair.

Johnny-boy ... I’m disappointed with you.  I thought we had a deal. Everything was going so well and then you had a change of heart.

I’m sorry, he screamed. Please don’t kill me.

He shrugged his shoulders. No one cares that you’re sorry. You took the money, right?

Yes, John said, dangling as coins fell out of his pocket. But I couldn’t do it. My family was at the game. I had a lot riding on that game.

Ted leaned over the edge and flicked the toothpick into his face. So did we. All you had to do was throw five interceptions. You cost us a lot of money. I told you don’t play with us. But you seemed to misunderstand or maybe you took my kindness for weakness. I have a good mind to tell my guy to drop you, but then I wouldn’t benefit from that, now would I?

I’ll get your money. Please, I will get your money.

Ted turned his back to John and stuffed his hands into the pockets of his white linen suit. His pony-tail stopped shy of his small shoulders.

Since I like you, I’m going to give you another chance. He turned and glanced at the man holding John. Bring him back in and stand him up. Ted stepped closer. There’s an upcoming playoff game and your team is favored to win by a landslide. We are going to invest a large amount of money for you to lose the game. Make sure you throw three interceptions in the first quarter.

John lowered his head for a few seconds and glanced upward. Tears pooled in the corner of his eyes. Please, don’t make me do it. We’re one game away from the championship.

Ted smiled. It’s done. Your team will lose or you will attend a funeral service for your mother. I’ll contact you in a few days with more specific requests ... I mean demands for the game. You will do exactly what we say or face the penalties.

As Ted walked away with a careless grin, he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. Sir, the package is secure. We shall receive a great financial gain within soon.
