    About the Author

    Note

I’ve been in the Christmas spirit for the past week when this little idea came to me. Then I saw this photo and it pretty much cinched the deal. It’s short, sweet and just right for the holidays. Hope you enjoy!

    1: Nicholas

It’s about time you find a wife, son. I’m not getting any younger and I want to retire. I can’t do that until you are settled with a wife and hopefully a son on the way.

Oh, no. Not this again. My father’s been harping on me about getting married for the past century. Says ‘it’s time to take over the family business’. What’s the family business you might ask? Well… I’m Santa Claus’s son, Nicholas Claus, junior. I’d say which number, but we’ve been around since about 280 AD. That’s a long time. Santa Claus is our moniker. What the world knows us by.

Like I said, he’s been on my case for almost a century now. I’m only about six hundred years old. Five hundred and seventy-three to be exact. Plenty of time to find a wife. It’s not that I haven’t been looking, it’s just that I haven’t found her. Found that spark. That need father and Papoh spoke of. According to him and my Papoh, Nicolaus, I’m past due for finding my one and only. In the earthly world, I’m barely in my thirties.

But after fifteen hundred years of sleighing, it’s worn on him just a little. He’s ready to pass the torch. He loves it, as do I, so I know it’s time for me to take over but it’s in the Kringle Claus to be married before we take over the reins. Literally. And we’re only allowed to choose a woman from the Earth Realm, who can bare us a child. It has to be a special type of woman too.

Unfortunately, we can only produce one male offspring. There hasn’t been more than one Claus child since almost the beginning. There had been a dark feud about who would be the official face of Christmas and two brothers, twins, fought until their father cast one out to be human and his adopted uncle, Ringle Kringle, raised him to live the remainder of his days as a normal earthling with no recollection of who he was until he died a very old age.

Then our ancestor cast a spell so deeply engrained in our blood, so that from then on, only one male will be born to a Claus. And having a girl? Even more impossible. Father said it’s something in our blood. Something in our DNA that always forms the Y chromosome within our females’ fetuses. No siblings either.

Has it been lonely? Of course. No offense to our faithful and loyal workers, the elves, but sometimes one needed more than just this stationary life. And for the past seventy-three years, during the month of December, I’ve been able to go down into the Earth Realm and "meet" women. I just haven’t found the one woman who spins my world around.

That’s the only woman us Claus’s can have.

My father told me when he met my mother, there was this feeling that started in his stomach and radiated up his spine, stopped his heartbeat and then a few other… things. Something I didn’t want to know about when I was a kid, and not really now, but he said I would know the moment I saw her. Basically speaking, when that one woman sparks up my whole entire world and speaks to my soul without a single word being spoken, that’s when I’m supposed to know she’s it. She’s the one. Yet for the life of me, I haven’t found her yet. I wanted to. I’m ready for her, but the whole entire light me up like a Christmas tree just hasn’t happened yet.

Nicky? Are you even listening to me, boy? Your mother would like a grandson before she goes.

I can’t help but laugh. Pop, where is she supposed to go? She doesn’t die before you and you still have a long life ahead of you, so don’t even think about pushing that on me. I’ll get there. I just haven’t found her yet. Speaking of which, tomorrow is December first in America. I want to try there. I think Texas.

The boy’s got you there, Nico. My Papoh said, chuckling. He’ll find her. I have a good feeling about this. Texas feels right, Nicky. Go maybe southeast. Houston area. Yes. That’s sounding a bit right.

That’s the thing about my Papoh. He gets these feelings. And they were always accurate. I’ve been all over the world, including the United States. New York, Chicago, Miami and even Los Angeles. I’ve even tried some small towns too, but most women I’ve met never speak to me. I’m not forcing myself to find the one because I know when I finally meet her, I’ll know it. It’ll be instant.

Alright. I’m done on the subject. Now, before you go, please go see the reindeer. Last year, Dasher and Vixen wouldn’t eat for at least a week when you left without saying a word.

Out of the nine-sleigh reindeer, Dasher and Vixen have taken to me real special like ever since I first saw them as a baby. They were the only ones that had ever let me ride them when no other ever would. Would allow me to feed them when only Virtie, the sleigh caretaker, usually fed them.

The reindeer usually keep to themselves for most of the year until it was time to start training for Christmas.

When I was younger, they even spoke to me. Not out loud like humans speak, but inside the mind. When I asked pop about it, he said it was a gift that’s given to each Santa. That the reindeer spoke back to him. They didn’t do it often, but during Christmas time he said it could get hectic in the head. I understood it was a Santa thing. As I grew out of infancy and into young adulthood, their voices faded. But I still had that bond with those two. I could usually figure out what they want from me.

I will. I’m going to go now and get ready. I’ll say bye to mother and grandmother on my way out. I’m sure they’re holing up in the evening room, drinking eggnog and gossiping.

    Alright, Nicky. Good luck, son.

After saying my good-byes to them, I went in search for mother and grandmother. Just like I said, they were in the evening room with a roaring fire blazing in the background, making it look like a picture-perfect image. The two of them are rocking in their gliders, a cup of eggnog with probably a splash of whiskey in their mugs, talking. But of course, my mother, who barely looks in her fifties, must have felt me because she turns, her whisper white-blond hair curling back and a big, motherly smile tilts on her lips, as she greets me.

That was her thing. She always knew when I was around. Nicky, dear. Is it that time again?

Grandmother Mary turns to me, her snow-white hair glistening, her eyes twinkling, wrinkling crows feet next to them as she nods her head, giving me a soft, happy smile.

"Yes, Netty. It’s time. I feel something stirring in the air. It’s coming. Yes. The one. Oh, my darling. She’s going to change the stars. I feel it. Oh, Nicky. You’ll never
