Finding a Leprechaun - Diana Marie DuBois
Chapter One
As far as the eye could see, water lapped up against the levee leading to the murky bayous. Gnarly cypress knees jutted from the water. Frogs balanced and hopped from root to root, croaking out sing-song melodies. The glorious huge cypress trees swung out their branches and lush moss dangled above the water, daring anything to grab ahold.
There was not much difference between the fairy realm versus the human realm. But in our world humans couldn’t see our magic unless we allowed them to. Our world was hidden behind a veil.
I was short, stout, and my hair was the color of fire. Today, though, I wandered through the massive oak trees with their Spanish moss hanging almost to the ground, in search of the perfect four-leaf clover. Beyond the oak trees was the human realm, one without magic. It whispered to me as much as mine did.
Before I could stop myself, I stepped out of my world and into the human one, hoping I’d find what I had come for. My mother had stopped worrying years ago that I would lose my memory if I stepped outside the protection of our world. After all, I hadn’t come from this land, but from another fairy realm. I donned the green outfit of a leprechaun, but my family here was comprised of fairies of the Feu Follet, or Cajun fairies. This life was the only one I’d ever known.
Today was an important day. It was the first of March, and I had to prepare for Saint Patrick’s Day. My family always made sure to celebrate my heritage. This year, though, I planned on finding the elusive four-leaf clover. Then maybe I would receive the answers I desperately needed. One, in particular, was why I had been left here so far away from Ireland.
I looked and searched, but the four-leaf clover was nowhere to be found. The wind howled around me and the air smelled of rain. I looked up into the sky and saw the dark clouds moving in formation to pelt the ground below with its tears.
I sighed deeply. With no luck in sight, I stepped back through the veil and spotted something in the grass. Could it be what I'm looking for? I wondered silently. I spread the crispy blades back to reveal three-leaf clovers, but smack dab in the middle sat an emerald clover with four symmetrically shaped leaves.
Eureka!
I exclaimed.
Gently I tugged on the stem, trying to pull it from the ground. As I did a hazy light began to swirl. I let it go quickly and stared in disbelief. "Look under the clover, Jacob," an unfamiliar voice whispered.
Who’s there?!
I exclaimed and looked around. But no one was there.
I glanced back to the grass and saw a hint of the swirling light again. A whirring noise resounded in my head. I dropped to the ground and held my ears. With my face in close proximity to the grass, I noticed something. One of the leaves bristled, so I peered closer and nudged it with a finger. Silky blue translucent wings folded back slightly, revealing a tiny creature.
Being drawn to it, I leaned closer as instinct overtook me, and I reached out to touch it. As if it knew someone was there, the wings quickly wrapped around the body, hiding it deeper amidst the grass.
What is it?
I wondered aloud, and forgot the four-leaf clover that now floated away in the air. Could it be a tiny bug?
The wings again flapped open, and this time I saw a tiny creature—a baby fairy, similar in size to a lightning bug—but unlike any I’d ever seen before. She began to cry, causing a flood of tears to stream down her face. She rolled over and tried to sit up.
Are you here all alone? Where are your parents?
I asked softly, tipping my black bowler hat, not expecting an answer. The gold buckle shone brightly as I placed it back on my head.
I quickly checked to see if any other fairies were around, but none were. My gaze returned to the fairy, who wiped at her eyes with pudgy hands. She looked up at me and held her arms up, wanting to be held.
A wave of elation swept over me as I scooped her up, her warmth causing me to tear up a bit. The only time I’d held something this small in my hand was my niece, Landyn.
She grinned up at me, and the emotion tugged at my heart. That's all right, little one.
I patted her on her head. Her brown hair cascaded down her back. I can take you to a place where it’s safe and there are others for you to play with.
She nodded as if she understood me, and curled into a small ball, wrapping her blue pearlescent wings around her body.
She fell fast asleep in the palm of my hand. I had no idea what I'd gotten myself into, but there was no way I could leave her there all by herself. She'd surely be eaten
