    STORMS ON AN OPAL SEA

The inn door boomed open to reveal two silhouetted figures braced against the fierce winds and staggering inside. Patrons howled as playing cards flew away and lanterns danced in the sudden draft. The shadowy figures staggered into the common room and peered around as the harbor wind swirled the smokey air.

Shut the damn door, the innkeeper yelled.

The taller silhouette gestured and his partner turned and wrestled the door shut. Both men then joined the innkeeper at the bar.

Gunner Zyrri sat back down warily, his hand slipping from knife to ale mug. A wiry man of indeterminate age, he scanned the common room for trouble, but none of the locals appeared concerned over the new arrivals. Satisfied, he picked up his mug, found it empty, and set it back down with a clatter. The men around the table chuckled at his actions.

Oh ho, some lass looking for ye? Captain Vendhel said with a smile. Pass me that mug.

Women are a trouble in any port, First Officer Redhunt said.

The other officers murmured agreement. Second Officer Argali slid Zyrri’s empty mug toward the Captain.

Earlier in the day the Verdant Swan had sailed into the only harbor on the rugged island Kingdom of Strothkurn and the main city of Stranx. After spending all day unloading cargo from Choy, the ship officers sought to quench their thirst with some fine Strothian ale.

The Captain filled Zyrri’s mug and slid it back. What’s our cargo status, Mister Argali?

Sold all the Tears of Irlum, Captain, and the Choyan fabrics and silk are selling well. The rill-rill, spices, and seeds may take longer but they’re selling. Once that noble picks up his statues, we’ll have an empty hold. Slim pickings on finding cargo. That will cost us.

    Why’s that, Mister Argali?

Storms last fall wiped out most of the sheep herds, so there’s little to no wool to buy. I found a deal on some of this ale though, so I’ll buy as much as I can.

"Kara’s luck, will take years to regrow the herds, Redhunt said. Anything else we can grab for profit?"

Gunner Zyrri and navigator Yasithi nodded and drank. The Goddess of Luck was a fickle bitch.

Argali smirked. "Fish oil that stinks worse than Skoor’s feet, and some decorative shells we might sell in Alexiandrölarn, but not enough to fill the Swan’s belly. Sorry, Captain, slim profits this trip."

We’ve been tight before. The Captain said with conviction and took a drink.

Footsteps made Zyrri look up at the two strangers approaching. His hand fell to his knife automatically. While the men didn’t appear dangerous, it was his job to remain watchful and ready to call on his other talents.

The older man was a lanky, swarthy skinned man with a neatly clipped mustache and beard and gray hair tied back with
