About this ebook
Sometimes, the people who love us best are not family.
Ino is 80 and lives alone in a third floor walk-up in New York's Little Italy. She's sometimes forgetful, diabetic, and suffers from chronic heart failure. On Christmas Eve eve, her successful CEO son calls to tell her he's in the city and plans to stop by later on. She's overjoyed (she hasn't seen him in months) and prepares a feast of all his favorite foods. Exhausted, she patiently awaits his arrival with her reliable home health aide Ruby by her side. When things don't go to plan, Ino and Ruby discover the true meaning of Christmas.
Note: this is a short story.
Marianne Sciucco
Marianne Sciucco writes contemporary and YA fiction. She says she's not a nurse who writes but a writer who happens to be a nurse. A lover of words and books, she dreamed of becoming an author when she grew up but became a nurse to avoid poverty. She later brought her two passions together and writes about the intricate lives of people struggling with health and family issues. Her debut novel, Blue Hydrangeas, an Alzheimer's love story, is a Kindle bestseller, Indie Reader Approved, a Book Works Book of the Week, a Library Journal Self-e Selection, and a 5-star Readers Favorite. Marianne's work with Alzheimer's patients and their families led her to help found the organization AlzAuthors.com, the global community of authors writing about Alzheimer's and dementia from personal experience to light the way for others. She is president of the organization, a board member, manager, acquisitions editor, and podcast host and producer for Untangling Alzheimer's and Dementia, an AlzAuthors Podcast. Marianne has also published a Young Adult novel, Swim Season, an Official Selection in the Young Adult General Fiction category of New Apple's 2017 Annual Book Awards for Excellence in Independent Publishing and a Book Works Book of the Week. Swim Season is based on the author's 11 years' experience as a Swim Mom, and the longest book she hopes she'll ever write. She prefers shorter fiction, and has published three short stories: Ino's Love, the award-winning Collection: Daisy Hunter Story No. 1, and Birthday Party: Daisy Hunter Story No. 2. The Daisy Hunter stories are loosely based on her childhood experiences. Visit her Amazon page for details on all her stories. A native Bostonian, Marianne lives in New York's Hudson Valley. When not writing, she works as a campus nurse at a community college and helps run AlzAuthors.com. She enjoys books, the beach, and craft beer, preferably all at the same time. Ino's Love - Marianne Sciucco
Ino's Love
A blast of hot air, pungent with the aroma of sautéed garlic, greeted me when I pushed open the door to Ino's third floor apartment.
Is that you, Ruby?
she called from the kitchen.
It's me,
I said, lumbering down the hall, both hands toting large shopping bags stuffed with freshly laundered clothes. The garlic smell grew more overpowering with each step. This place is like a hothouse,
I complained, breathless. I dropped the bags on the kitchen floor and looked around in dismay. Onion and garlic skins, eggshells, and empty containers of ricotta cheese and tomatoes filled the sink. Dirty dishes littered the counter top. Breadcrumbs crunched under foot. What are you up to, Ino? I left this place spotless yesterday.
I'm making dinner.
Ino turned from the stove with a wooden spoon in one hand, her apron spattered by her efforts. Company's coming,
she said, a broad grin lighting up her wrinkled face. Tomato sauce simmered on the back burner, filling the room with its fresh, sweet smell.
And who might that be?
I asked, tugging off my coat. As far as I knew, Ino never entertained. Meals on Wheels delivered most of her dinners. Her only visitors were the lady in 3B, Father O'Brien, the visiting nurse, and the UPS man.
Ray,
Ino said proudly, her lips wrapping around the name
