Matt Kratz

I was born in Cambridge, Massachussetts. After living in Columbus, Ohio, for a few years, I moved to Richardson, TX, in 1978, when my father got a job teaching at UT-Dallas. I switched schools a couple times before settling back into the Plano schools and graduated from Plano Senior HS in 1990, Midwestern State (BA in History) in 1995, and UT Dallas (MA) in 2008. I am an aspiring writer, and my interests include movies (especially those from New Zealand), photography, Australian & New Zealand Wildlife, birds, spectator sports (I love baseball and attend Dallas area ball games), and I love to travel. 3 Worlds Journey is my first novel, and I am currently working on more. I love letting my imagination go wild. Most of my stories and characters are based on what I read and what I thought of when I was younger.

3 Gamely Pursuits - Matt Kratz

    Prologue

He was walking along the beach on Corpus Christi.

This was one of three cities he divided his life among. He worked as an amateur scout for the San Antonio Spurs;he officially lived in Dallas, and he had a vacation house in Corpus.

He noticed a conch shell lying in the sand. This was beautiful. It was large with a gaping mouth. It had a green streak across the side and what appeared to be little red rubies along it.

He put it up to his ear. The ocean seemed to be playing. Other sounds too.

He decided to keep it. A great memento!

    Chapter I

Todd Fleming entered his Corpus Christi beach house. He gazed contently at his shiny new conch shell-he had never seen one so big or so shiny.

He was on a brief hiatus from his job as an amateur scout job for the San Antonio Spurs, a job which he loved. He basically checked out players at the college at other lower levels. He looked around the room and saw his large autographed posters of George Gervin, Johnny Moore, David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Sean Elliott, Tony Parker, Gregg Popovich, Stan Albeck, and other Spurs players and personnel. Some of them were even autographed! The house, as were his others, was decorated with Spurs memorabilia and wallpaper.

He approached the conch shell and placed his ear up to it, hoping to hear the ocean. Instead, he was a little surprised to hear something else.

You love your job, a little voice whispered. You also love Subway sandwiches, action movies, and Alan Jackson and Kacey Musgraves songs.

What the-Todd started to think. I love all of those. I’ve seen AJ in concert a couple times and hope to see Kacey. I eat frequently at Subway and thoroughly enjoy action films. But how-

He picked up the shell and turned it over in his hands for a few moments. A thought crossed his mind as a little smile came across his face and he started to walk out the door.

He saw a little girl walk by. She had to be about five or six. He held the shell up to his ear.

He heard about stories of dragons and fairies. He also had an image of a heart of gold.

I like this shell, he thought.

He held the shell up to his ear again as an elderly man walked by. A ton of images flooded through this time, some of which overwhelmed him. A few seemed so painful, including those of loss, that he felt a tear run down his cheek.

He felt the man’s pain of the recent loss of his wife and the memories of a long-ago war. It reminded him of some of the losses he had felt over the years, though he had never been in a

    war.

The shell was giving him sympathy. It was also making him a bit of a psychic! More importantly, it was giving him empathy and the ability to listen to understand, not just to reply.

He decided to try it on some other people before heading back home.

He noticed a teenaged girl walking by. He held the shell up to his ear. He was a little distressed by what he heard this time.

He heard inner tears-sounds of a lonely soul. The usual angst of adolescence. He had been there too. He heard how much she wished she could talk to boys and how much she disliked her appearance. He wished he could reach out to hear, but he had the feeling he knew how she would react. Instead, he listened for her to think her identity and email. He would look her up online later and contact the right people to help her.

She really wasn’t all that unattractive. He would tell her that if and when he could contact her. He would have to think about what to say. He pulled out a pen and pencil from his pocket and jotted down the email the shell told him. He hoped he would say the right thing.

He held the conch shell up to his own head. The shell told him to tell her that she need not listen to what the mean girls were saying and that he knew how deep scars could run due to personal experience and that all the makeup in the world couldn’t cover it up.

Just where exactly did this shell come from?

A very tall, muscular man then walked by. Putting the shell up to his ear, Todd learned that he was the star basketball player on the local college team. He thought he recognized him-Lionel Les Michaels! As he listened to the shell, however, he heard some unpleasant stuff.

Blast my coach! Michaels thought. I dislike everyone adorning me all the time just because I can dribble a freaking basketball. I wouldn’t mind one community project the coach has us do, but four in the course of two weeks? I know he wants us to improve the image of the team, but that is too friggin much! And my teammates? I’m the star! Can’t they pass the ball to me more? I think I’ll leave the college soon to turn pro-I think the Nuggets or the Lakers could use someone with my talents!

I think I just got a peek into a player’s ego, Todd thought. This shell really works! If I could only find out how to put it to good use and my advantage…

It could work major wonders! So far, it’s off to a good start!

The shell seemed a little quiet on this one, though. It didn’t really have much to say for an ego like this!

The next person he ran across was a police officer. This one will be good!

He started learning about how hard it was to pull a gun on someone, and even though he had to be incredibly brave, he knew people were out to get him, so we was very grateful for his bulletproof vest. Todd learned about the arrests and cases the police officer had made in the short six months he had been on the job. His favorite was arresting a guy who had been high on drugs, and the officer had also arrested some juvenile delinquents who had robbed several stores in the area. The officer was
