    Chapter 1

    Ebenezer Wrath

Present day, Seattle, WA — First National Bank

EVERYONE, GET ON THE GROUND … NOW! boomed the masked man as he entered the glass doors of the lobby at First National Bank. He shouldered a full synthetic semi-auto nine millimeter and fired off a short burst of rounds into the high ceiling. He unmasked himself, revealing a young face, inexperienced yet brimming with confidence. Short hair glistened with an attempt to tame the style by way of matte wax. I WANT EVERYONE TO LOOK AT MY FACE — it’s going to be famous … INFAMOUS! he boasted.

Bank patrons screamed with panic as bodies hit the floor, instinctively covering their heads or huddling behind one of the marble pillars. Mothers covered their children’s eyes as they shielded them from the threat that had entered. All of the people inside the lobby had gotten down, except for one. A man was standing idly by in line; if not for the disruption, he would have been the next to see a teller. His wavy black hair had occasional grey strands woven throughout. He was thin. He was tired. But most of all, he was perturbed at the intrusion.

Just then another masked man rushed into the building, also unloading a burst of metal into the ceiling. He stood ready with the automatic weapon aimed at the nearest bank patron.

A third followed, sauntering into the lobby. A pistol was holstered to his body, but he was empty-handed. His mask left his neck uncovered. A small circular tattoo marked bare skin on the back of his neck. He wore black suit pants and a black vest. He even sported a dark yellow and black-striped tie for the occasion, slung on with a perfectly-tied eldredge knot. His sleeves were decorative tattoos, blanketing his arms from shoulder to wrist. A silver ring decorated each of his fingers and both thumbs, every piece of jewelry having a unique design.

I fink what my friends are trying to say is … if any one of you touches a cell phone, besides to throw it in the center of the lobby … well, we’ll start shooting children first, he declaimed loudly. The room stayed silent except for a mother that whimpered at the tattooed man’s threat. She held her two children tight as they started to cry. The charming fiend pulled his pistol from the holster, approaching the mother and her children. He brushed the hair from her teary eyes with the barrel of his gun. Now, now … everything will be just fine, he crooned devilishly. CELL PHONES … NOW! With his pistol still in the woman’s face, cell phones quickly flew across the marble floor, sliding across the lobby’s floor toward the center of the room.

Meanwhile, the second masked man had rushed to the side of the counter and down a short hallway. Suddenly, a stream of shots was heard over the clatter of discarded cell phones. CLEAR! yelled the second man from the other room.

The man with the tattoos nodded to the unmasked jelly-haired robber, who took a central position in the lobby. The third man started toward the hallway when he peered over to the counter, noticing the bank patron who had not gotten down. He was simply standing, facing away from the commotion as if he were still in line awaiting his turn. The wavy-haired patron had his hands shoved in his pockets and all but ignored the bursts of gunfire and panicked customers. With crow’s feet decorating a worn face, he showed a nonchalance that only lengthy exposure to extreme situations could provide.

The man with the pistol approached and held his gun to the wavy-haired patron’s back. "You ‘ard of hearing or somfin’? Can you understand what’s takin’ place in this fine establishment? Leaving no time for a response, the pistol-wielding man continued. What’s your name, mister?"

Ebenezer, replied the man plainly. Ebenezer Wrath. Ebenezer didn’t like violence by means of utter chaos, but if justified, by meticulous deduction and planned execution was different; that was acceptable. He had made a vow, after all,
