Jemma 5 - Clarissa Carlyle
Chapter 1
JEMMA LARSEN STARED at the television unable to believe what she was seeing. Lexi was trying to come after her, still, after everything she'd been through, after everything the witch had tried. She only caught the end of Lexi’s interview but the news reporter covering it was happy to retell every bit of it so there was no denying what was going on. This time, she'd gone too far, however; she was messing with her livelihood. The minute someone questioned her writing or her family all bets were off.
Lexi probably couldn’t write her way out of a paper bag.
Jemma said out loud. That makes no sense, but I knew what I meant,
she continued telling herself.
Lexi Rockford the former Victoria Secret model and media darling alleges the well-known popular blogger actually paid someone to write all of her blog posts and used an assistant to send those heart-felt responses. Jemma's camp couldn't be reached for comment,
the busty reporter said, as she looked somewhere off camera. She was probably trying to seem aloof, but she looked stupid. Why a reporter would look away from the audience she was talking to was beyond her comprehension.
She thought about what the reporter had just said. Jemma laughed, her camp? They certainly hadn't contacted anyone she knew. The phone rang and she knew without looking it was either Jack or Maya, and they were both probably glued to their televisions at that moment. Her friends would always be the first ones to go to bat for her and to let her know when someone was talking about her.
What is that bitch trying to do to you?
Maya yelled before Jem even said hello. I really want to rip her face off for all this Jem, I'm so sorry.
You could at least make sure it is me before you start screaming obscenities into the phone... I could have been Robbie, you know?
Jemma laughed to herself trying to sound serious. She loved giving Maya a hard time whenever she could, and she was trying to lighten the mood of a serious conversation. She was pretty sure Robbie had heard worse out of her own mouth.
Oh... Sorry, Jem. But, seriously! What does that bitch think she is doing! Why would she get on there and say those things about you? Does she have nothing better to do? I swear it is like she has some twisted lesbian crush on you the way she can’t do anything else but obsess over you!
There was a picture, Jemma thought, there was no way Lexi would feel anything but animosity for her, it was Daniel she wanted.
It's okay, Maya, she's just reaching now. My fans know I'm someone who writes everything I say and I don't have to worry about it. Daniel's gone and now I can focus on my new job and Robbie. I don't have to worry about what Lexi is saying about me.
I'll go to bat for you, literally, upside her head, you just say the word.
Jemma chuckled and pictured that scenario. It was satisfying to picture her head sort of jerking back as the bat hit.
Thank you for being a true friend,
Jemma said, and turned the television off to finish getting ready. When Jack called she let it go to voicemail and moments later got a text message.
Don't ignore my calls bitch, call me soon.
Jemma ignored the text and yelled at Robbie. Jack was super dramatic and if she answered, she’d never get off the phone with him.
Come on, dude, it’s time to eat.
He ran into the room and smiled at her.
Why are you so smug, Pan?
she asked. Noticing when he had something on his mind was her specialty. Most of the time it was something he wanted her to find out by asking questions. She wasn’t going to ask any today; he was practically bursting so he would tell her.
I lost a tooth!
He bounced up and down next to the table.
Oh, so the tooth fairy has to come and see you.
Okay, Jem.
Robbie rolled his eyes at her because he didn’t believe in the tooth fairy, but she would still sneak into his room late at night and put the money under his pillow. It was fun to try to keep her little brother young as long as possible. Those little things gave her joy, even if she was pretending he still believed in anything anymore.
Come on, eat up, we have to get going.
I could ride the bus you know,
he said, as he put a fork full of food in his mouth.
Then you would miss my amazing morning sing-a-longs.
She smiled and downed some coffee. Truth was she was scared to put him on the bus. She couldn’t control what happened once he got to school, but at least she could get him there first. There were bullies on the bus and bad influences. It was just too much for her.
She watched impatiently as he finally took his last bite and rushed him out the door so she could drop him off before work. She didn’t give Lexi and her crazy accusations anymore thought. Driving to Robbie’s school only took ten minutes and then it was ten minutes to her work; it was perfect.
Let me turn up this Prince song.
She smiled at Robbie in the rear view.
Please don’t, Jemma, I have a headache.
You don’t get headaches.
He broke into a huge grin and laughed loudly. I know.
You little scoundrel.
She pulled into the school parking lot and made sure not to yell after him or wave exaggeratedly. He had told her those things embarrassed him. Oh to be young again. She was happy she didn’t have to worry about her computer life anymore because she had an actual job. Humming to herself, she pulled into the parking lot of the magazine, straightened her skirt and walked in to her dream job. Things were going her way, finally.
She made the mistake of answering her phone, as she made her way inside, and was met with Jack’s screeching in her ear.
How could you not answer your phone? I can’t believe you would ignore me. I am your dearest friend. I am on your side.
Stop, Jack, geez, I had to get Robbie off to school. I have responsibilities, unlike you silly boy.
For shame that you would say such a horrible thing to your bestie. I have some information you might be interested in.
"Maya is my bestie and I’m not sure I want to know what you have to tell me, Jack. Quite often the things
