Tall, Tall Trees - Linda Mooney
Chapter 1
Growlers
There was never any warning before the monster appeared. The noise it made was loud enough to make their ears bleed as it drew closer, searching for prey, chewing the tops off the tall, tall trees and throwing huge chunks of wood over the village. The only thing they were certain of was that the monster, the growler, never appeared when the weather was rainy, or when it was snowing. Only when the sun shone.
The summer months were the worst.
Pellera paused from where she was laying the wash across the rocks to dry and looked upward. She sucked in her breath and held it to listen. Her heart thudded in her chest as she strained. Waiting. Fear creeping into her blood like ice.
Then it came.
She shrieked, dropping the clean shirt, and glanced around for someplace safe where she could hide. The cliffs were too far away and the open area in front of her offered no protection if she tried to make a run for it. Pivoting around, she dashed for the forest.
The growler moved with a speed faster than the wind. The sound quickly escalated, growing so loud, so quickly, the air vibrated. The trees were violently shoved from one side to the other until limbs bent and broke. Shredded leaves and twigs swirled through the air, slapping her and leaving red welts where they hit. Wood splinters, some the size of an arm or leg, pelted the ground like crude knives. One caught her in the back of her calf and she fell hard.
Pellera!
She barely heard him. His voice was ripped away by the rising gale as hands roughly grabbed her. Strong arms lifted her and she was carried until he was able to stuff her and himself into the hollow of one large trunk. Lowering her onto her feet, Oron quickly checked her over for any injuries. When he found the sliver embedded in her leg, he blanched.
Oh gods, Pellera! You’re hurt!
He started to tend to her wound when she stopped him. Leave it! Hold me! Just hold me!
She grasped his shirt as her body trembled. Overhead, the sway and crack of the trees being devoured by the growler drowned out all sound as the creature passed by. She had no idea she’d been crying until Oron offered her his shirttail to wipe her nose.
His arms encircled her, pressing her tightly against him. Inside the relative safety of the hollow tree, they clung to each other to wait it out. The drought had dried out the forest, turning the trunks into hard husks. Outside, they could hear chunks of wood striking their sanctuary. One with such force that part of it split the bole, penetrating and leaving a section of it poking inside.
After what seemed like hours, the growler moved away. Its terrifying roar gradually diminished until it disappeared altogether.
Cautiously, Oron peered through the slit. I think it’s gone.
She agreed. Once the growler moved away, it didn’t immediately return. Sometimes they could hear it approaching, like a creature retracing its steps, but once the initial damage was done, it continued on its way to wreak havoc elsewhere. Spreading death and destruction for miles.
Oron shifted and their bodies rubbed provocatively within the tight enclosure. She could feel a familiar prodding against her belly. Drawing her arms about his waist, she tightened her grip, pressing her cheek to his wide chest. She could hear his heart racing like footsteps pounding the earth at a dead run. For a moment, she wondered if it was because of the danger they’d barely managed to elude, or their closeness.
His muscular arms went around her and a kiss was pressed to her hair. Pellera lifted her face for his lips. He softly murmured her name before his mouth descended on hers.
She felt a hand slip down her back until his fingers grasped her buttocks and squeezed, forcing her tighter against him until she could barely breathe. Smiling to herself, she wriggled her hips. Oron grunted and released her bottom.
Oh gods. If we only had the time.
Quick. Quick, my love,
she frantically whispered, clutching his tunic. The heat and humidity was oppressing. Sweat beaded and rolled down their exposed skin, but the need to have him was consuming her as she started to reach around to the front of his pants. A hand grabbed her wrist and pulled it away.
I want to have you in the worst way,
he admitted, answering her silent plea. But we both know others will be searching for you. You need to go and let them know you’re safe.
Lifting her chin, he gazed lovingly down at her. But first, we need to get that wound tended to before it becomes infected.
Disappointment must have colored her face as Oron chuckled and dropped another soft kiss to her lips. Soon, my love. Soon.
Tonight?
I’ll let you know,
he promised. Come. We need to take care of your leg.
He crawled out first, then offered his hand and arm. Pellera found she could put her weight on the injured limb, but walking was not an option. Without commenting, Oron lifted her into his arms, grabbed his spear where he’d propped it inside with them, and turned to begin heading deeper into the woods.
Oron, no! No!
She struggled for him to release her. You can’t take me to your healer. Take me back to the caves.
He paused. The going was rough as fallen limbs and other debris covered the forest floor. He glanced at her, finally nodding. But I’m staying with you until someone comes for you,
he sternly told her.
She tried to argue with him, but she knew that face when his mind was made up and couldn’t be swayed. He was determined to see to her safety and well-being, regardless of the trouble his being at the caves would cause.
They made it as far as the tree line when she struggled in his grasp. Put me down, Oron. Now. Please.
He understood her reluctance and relented, setting her carefully on her feet, but he didn’t release her. Tearing a piece of material from his tunic, he extracted the sliver embedded in her calf, then tightly wrapped the wound. There. That should hold you until you can get your medicine woman to tend to it.
He looked down at her, gazing into her face. A roughened hand tenderly grasped her neck and his thumb caressed the skin below her ear. His dark eyes were filled with longing, mirroring her own silent desire.
A shout in the distance broke the moment and Oron backed away. After one final look, he vanished into the brush, leaving her aching for him.
Again.
Chapter 2
Aunty Vo
Trying to hide her disappointment, Pellera turned and exited the tree line. In the clearing, at least a dozen people milled about, arranging search parties to hunt for those they
