    School Life

‘I knew I Loved You Before I Met You’ is the title of my favourite song, one that I used to listen to when I was younger. This song always made me think about what love is and made me wonder how someone could love a person before he had even met her. But I was too young to know anything about love – so I just enjoyed listening to the song without bothering too much about its lyrics. The words of this song come true for me, and I was able to find answers to all my questions later in my life.

Let me take you to a town in Rajasthan called Pratapgarh. If you think Rajasthan is all about desert and camels then you are wrong. The desert is restricted only to a particular region in the state. Rajasthan is surrounded by the Aravalli mountain range, offering great charm and beauty to the landscape. The state also boasts of a very ancient culture and there are many old customs and traditions that are still being followed here. Many festivals like Gangour, Teej, and so on are celebrated exclusively in Rajasthan.

When I was four years old, I was admitted to a school close to my home. However, my mind was never on my studies and I would always wait for recess so that I could play in the ground with my friends. As the interval bell rang, I quickly use to eat my lunch, then rush to play in the ground. About twenty students from my class use to play together. The game was simple – each of us had to hit the other with the ball. Our seniors also used to playing alongside us and many times when our ball used to bounce into their part of the ground, they wouldn’t give us our ball back. This silly act of theirs always resulted in a big fight. Our fights would raise big clouds of dust but nobody in school cared to stop us, so we keep on fighting. I used to bring atleast two to three seniors down to the ground and most of the time, our gang use to win as we fought with great unity.

After recess, when our teacher saw our dirty and torn clothes, she would make all of us stand outside the class for the rest of the day. While standing outside, I used to wonder where my teacher was when the seniors were trying to bully us. I used to have plenty of friends and we used to do a lot of mischief in class. When I was in the first standard, I was shifted to another school in town.

    Class First

The new school was much bigger than the old one, with a bigger playground and many strict teachers. On my first day in the new school, I was crying, sitting on the last bench of my classroom. I was missing my friends from the old school. While crying, I was watching a big cylindrical iron tank in the ground, from which water was overflowing. Many kids from the nearby locality were playing with the overflowing water. I was wondering why I play like them for the whole day, with no school to go to. My new classmates seemed boring and studious (my classmates from my old school were more happy and more fun loving), and so no one spoke to me in class. During recess, I use to eat my lunch alone in the ground as I had no friends. After eating, I used to watch the other students playing in the ground.

A month later comes my first unit test, which was mathematics – the subject I feared the most. I did not know the answer to any questions as I had not prepared for the test. So, after the test, I put my test papers in my bag instead of giving it to my class teacher Poorti Madam. When she realised that I had not submitted my test papers, she marched me to the principal’s office. The principal madam, wearing golden spectacles, was sitting behind a big table. The room was much cooler than the classroom due to the air conditioner, a rarity during those days. My class teacher told her what I had done, after which she ruthlessly hit both my hands with a ten-iron scale. When I reached home, I did not get a happy welcome because the school authorities had already conveyed my misdeeds. Later that evening, while playing at the lower floor of the house, my grandfather whom everyone called Bauji came to me and told me in an angry voice, "I will come to
