    Chapter One: Introduction

Let’s just admit it now, smartphones aka dumbphones have taken over the world. Employees are preoccupied with their phones at work Schools are rife with students who can’t stay off their phones for more than a few minutes. They have become so accustomed to having their phones in their hands that they feel naked without them. Heaven forbid they miss a status update on a friend’s social media profile. Teens aren’t the only ones who have fallen victim to the curse of the dumbphone. Adults are just as much involved with this curse as teens are. Too many people are relying on their phones for gossip, entertainment, and occasionally, mischief. Societies worldwide have truly fallen under the spell of these dreaded electronic devices.

Phones have become one of the biggest, if not THE biggest, addiction this world has seen since the discovery of caffeine. It’s a growing epidemic that no one wants to stop either. A device like this was supposed to grant us some freedom and mobility , but instead it’s taken away a lot more than it has given us. The masses have become consumed with the idea that you need to have a phone at all times to function. Children are using phones as early as elementary school with little supervision from parents. . At the rate things are going, cellphones will be implanted in utero so expecting parents can communicate with their unborn children.

It’s actually pretty crazy when you think about it because in the beginning, cell phones weren’t supposed to be used the way they are today. From the beginning, they were really just a way for the military , or professionals who needed to communicate when they were out of the office. Eventually, they became popular with consumers everywhere. As if phones weren’t convenient enough already, they made advancements to turn them more into a personal agent type of device. Honestly, who wouldn’t want a device that holds all the information about the people you know so you don’t have to worry about racking your brain or wasting time trying to remember things your phone can?

The only issues with the way things are going is that the minute you put a phone into someone's hand, it literally becomes their life force. It’s almost as if the only way their life is clear and meaningful to them is to see their life through their phone and it’s something that too many people can’t break free. Once you hand someone a phone, they turn into a completely different person as if the phone itself is brainwashing them or an external force that compels them to rely on nothing other than the phone. If Darth Vader was around, he would tell everyone to join the dark side via their dumbphone!

Want to know the irony of this whole situation? I was in the telecommunications industry for 22 years and I considered myself quite the expert on telecom technology. Proud of myself for my achievements, I rose from being an entry-level clerk at AT&T to becoming a mid-level manager. Having a good knowledge of all things telecom, I was
