ONE
THE FATHER AND
HIS FAMILY
He also has planted eternity in men’s hearts and minds [a divinely
implanted sense of a purpose working through the ages which nothing
under the sun but God alone can satisfy].
ECCLESIASTES 3:11, AMP
There is in each of us, whether we are Christians or not, a sense that life must have a purpose, that it must consist of more than mere survival skills—that it must be made up of more than climbing to the top of the ladder of success and the accumulation of money and goods to prove our worth and existence. Ecclesiastes 3:11 tells us that this sense of purpose comes from God. The passage also declares that only God Himself can satisfy it. Only God can reveal to our hearts what our purpose is, and only God can satisfy our deep longings for significance.
PART ONE: GOD’S DESIGN
God’s plan and purpose for us have been carefully designed. He did not leave us to guess at what His plan is for our lives. Our goal in this chapter is to begin our discovery of God’s clear design, what motivated that design, and what has threatened that plan from the beginning of time.
A Closer Look at the Problem
The central theme in God’s plan for humanity on the earth was the concept of family. There is something innate within us that responds to family, because the Creator of the universe has marked our hearts with the need for love, belonging, unity, warmth and safety. All of these are the dynamics of a family as God designed it to be.
Never before in history has the family been so violently under siege. Not only are families falling apart at unprecedented rates, but also the very concept of family as we have known it is being attacked as outmoded and declared by many to no longer be of any practical value. Some are declaring that the conventional concept of family is hostile and discriminatory, and they have attempted to redefine family.
However, when the backbone of God’s framework crumbles, all of life is thrown out of joint. Pain, disintegration, dysfunction and brokenness are the excruciating results.
What is some of the pain and dysfunction that society is suffering because God’s framework—the family—is suffering such great assault?
What are some ways that some people attempt to replace family when they leave their own biological family?
What are they looking for?
The Church is not exempt from this onslaught of family breakdown. In fact, the difference in the divorce rate within the Church and without is negligible. Even if a family appears to be intact, it does not necessarily guarantee that love and caring are the dynamic of the home.
In Scripture, the term house of God
is used to describe the house-hold
or family
of God—the Church. First Peter 4:17 declares that the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God.
First Corinthians 11:32 in the Amplified version reads, But when we [fall short and] are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined and chastened, so that we may not [finally] be condemned [to eternal punishment along] with the world.
What do you think moves the heart of God to discipline His own people (see Hebrews 12:5-6)?
A Closer Look at God’s Truth
FATHER: A RELATIONAL TERM
Do you tend to view the term father
as biological or relational? What constitutes a father
?
In our broken society today, we can easily forget that the word father
is intended to be inherently relational. It identifies a type of relationship to someone. What do you think would be most significant to a loving father’s heart? Would it be merely the number of children he would have, or would there be something more in his desire for a family?
Does this affect your viewpoint of God? If so, how?
Read Ephesians 1:3-6. What does this passage tell us was God’s design for us from before the foundation of the world?
Note that the word sons
(Greek huios) in Scripture, when referring to God’s people, is inclusive of male and female. Sons
is an important term that denotes those who are heirs and who are moving toward maturity through the nurture, training and discipline of the Holy Spirit. Such training is to prepare the sons—heirs—for the receiving [of the] kingdom
(Hebrews 12:28) that has been prepared for [them] from the foundation of the world
(Matthew 25:34). Sons
is a term that denotes a full inheritance (see also Romans 8:14-17; Galatians 3:26–4:7; Hebrews 12 and Revelation 21:7).
Read Hebrews 2:9-10. How has God made every provision for His plan and purpose for us to come to complete fulfillment?
What does this tell us about the heart of God for His children?
FAMILY: AN OUTFLOW OF THE FATHER’S HEART
God’s most basic and fundamental nature is that of a Father. All of His creative work issued out of His Father-heart’s desire for a family. Initially, He created a home for His future children, and when it was ready, He created the first members of His family, fashioned in His own image, to dwell in it. These two members, Adam and Eve, were then given the privilege of enlarging God’s family as well as given stewardship over the earth. God commanded them to be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over . . . the earth
