Open – Reason
It’s ten in the morning. I woke up at six to a liter of soda and a whole bag of tater tots, microwaveable. After my shower I had four apples and two large cucumbers. Six mid-size Roma tomatoes. I fixed my hair and put on my makeup. A whole can of almonds, handfuls every time I changed products. Found my clothes, I prefer to wear a one-piece. Three king-size candy bars in the pockets left over from the day before. Read my emails with a gallon of milk while the pizza baked. I like my pizza with ranch. Family size bottle to cover the circumference of my large pie, which I finished as I did my paperwork for the day.
By the time I was ready to leave my house, I’d eaten approximately twelve thousand, three hundred and fifty one calories.
I spend the bulk of my days the same way anybody else probably does, working. My day job usually has me running around all day. Such is the life of a Fast One.
From ten to ten-fifteen I managed to cover thirteen blocks. That includes having a peek inside almost every building. You’ll mostly find elderly that early in the morning. I’ve made a habit to look out for them, anyway. The last retiree I found was on the floor for sixteen hours after they’d fallen. She said the pain stopped ages ago, but she couldn’t bring herself to move for fear it’d come back. Her voice had gone hoarse after calling for someone all day. More people fall every day than you think. I prefer to find them early now. I can cover more ground than those thirteen blocks, of course. But the whole thing is pointless if I’m moving faster than the sound waves can reach me.
Plus, I don’t want to burn off my breakfast too fast. The thirteen blocks already cost me about a thousand calories. Twice as fast means twice the burn.
My first emergency comes between ten forty five and eleven, about a mile and half away from home. I hear a man yelling. Words stop coming through clearly as the wind begins pounding your eardrums. Downside to being so fast. This man is angry.
I follow the noise to a locked door. I’m back outside in an instant. The window is three stories up, but it’s open wide enough that I can easily angle myself inside as I scale the building’s surface. I’m greeted by the sound of a slap; a scream, right behind it. The angry man is standing over his husband. In my first year, I could never get the airflow right. Entering a room for me can easily mean a whirlwind of papers if I’m not careful. But I’m good at it now. As I assess the situation, the men have no idea I’m in their kitchen. This is more to do with my ability to track your peripherals, and less with how fast I can be. The man on the floor is bruised. He’s laying like a rib is broken. Both men look
