      Marshall Wallace couldn’t cope with the pain. His brother and wife died recently. To make things worse the two events happened within three weeks of each other. He was not present for either death and so blamed himself partly for their demise and his continuing life. Marshall kept to himself a lot. He liked it better that way. It was very hard to get into trouble if he was sitting quietly at home watching television.

      Various people came to him in the days following the deaths. Each one tried to reason with him. They told him about how it wasn’t his fault and how they were in a better place now. Marshall didn’t believe any of that. He was the type to believe that if there really was an afterlife it would be the same as where he was now. He couldn’t believe in heavenly gates or a fiery inferno. Sometimes, particularly when he felt sad, he didn’t think there was an afterlife at all.
