About this ebook

The old gods are returning, or have they always been here?

Odin wakes to the call of a dying warrior crying out to be taken to Valhalla. Roused from his centuries of slumber, the All-Father wanders the Earth until he finds gods old and new. Do they have the answers he seeks? How does an ancient god of war find his place in the modern world?

A short story on the nature of religion and spirituality. We may no longer need a patriarch, but do we need to rediscover our divinities?

James L. Wilber is a writer, game designer, and ceremonial magician. Find out about more of his works at jameslwilber.com.

James L. Wilber

James L. Wilber describes himself as Anne Rice and Chuck Palahniuk's bastard love child. He's a pretentious prick who claims to pen, "literary genre fiction." Which means he writes smarmy shit about wizards and vampires doing a poor job at hiding his symbolism and metaphor. He's turned to self-publishing on the correct assumption his stories are just too fucking weird for mass consumption. He has contributed to numerous books for roleplaying games from companies such as: Wizards of the Coast, Paizo Publishing, White Wolf Studios, Bastion Press, and Atlas Games. He was also a writer on the Origins Award nominated, Buffy the Vampire Slayer Roleplaying Game by Eden Studios. Mr. Wilber also assumes the roles of husband, ceremonial magician, podcast host, and owner of a 100-lb Alaskan Malamute. He lives in Indianapolis, a dreary place built by masons obsessed with circles. Along with Stephan Loy and Dick Thomas, James is a member of Mid-World Arts, a collective of indie writers dedicated to helping each other produce quality works. Find out more at midworldarts.com. You can read his thoughts on politics, culture, and what he calls pagan chaos magick at scrollofthoth.com. He only uses social media that he enjoys, which means tumblr. Get to know him at scrollofthoth.tumblr.com, jameslwilber.tumblr.com, and geeksoutafterdark.tumblr.com. You can hear him on the podcasts Scroll of Thoth, and Geeks Out After Dark. I told you I would tell you my names. This is what they call me. I am called Glad-of-War, Grim, Raider, and Third. I am One-Eyed. I am called Highest, and True-Guesser. I am Grimnir, and I am the Hooded One. I am All-Father, and I am Gondlir Wand-Bearer. I have as many names as there are winds, as many titles as there are ways to die. My ravens are Huginn and Muninn, Thought and Memory; my wolves are Freki and Geri; my horse is the gallows.

    All-Father!

The cry echoed through the worlds. Out of Midgard, through Muspell, and Niflheim, and Alfheim, to Asgard. With the power of a dying man's prayer, it traveled all the way to the hall Valaskjalf, and into the ear of the Ancient-One, asleep upon his high throne.

For the first time in an aeon, Battle Wolf opened one eye and looked down upon the Earth.

Warriors scurried over sand and rock, wearing tunics the color of sand and rock. Their battle cries delighted him. They
