Introduction
The book of First Samuel tells of a momentous governmental change in the history of Israel. The last of the judges is also a great prophet, but the people have made a decision: They want a form of government similar to the nations around them. In response, a human king is appointed, and that same king is later rejected. Still, the way God’s chosen people function is changed forever, and these few years of history are recorded for us to read, research, enjoy, and learn from.
Author
So who is the writer of the first book of Samuel? Logic dictates that the prophet Samuel himself wrote the book, and that assumption would not be completely wrong. After all, who could record the details of Samuel’s birth and early life better than him? Samuel is certainly the main focus of the beginning of the book. But a problem arises when you consider that Samuel dies in a later chapter. So who would have completed writing this historical record after Samuel died?
Saul is another person that was introduced early on in First Samuel. Could he have written parts of this history? No, since Saul spent most of the book out of God’s favor, it is unlikely that he would have been of the disposition to write a divinely inspired history about his own downfall.
A more promising candidate is David. The young man and later king would certainly have been willing to write the book that would later be called First Samuel. David wrote other parts of the Bible, namely many of the Psalms. In fact, it could be suggested that David wrote the entire story, including the origin of Samuel. But looking at 1 Chronicles 29:29, we find an important clue as to if Samuel ever wrote any of the book that bears his name, and who may have picked up the slack after Samuel’s death. It says: "Now the acts of David the king, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Samuel the seer, and in the book of
