A lover of history since grade school, Mary heard many of the tales related in Sister Wolf, such as Hermit Eeds, the Indian cave on Mohans Run, Simon Kenton living in the area, and the capture of many residents by Native Americans. Her fourth great-grandfather, Joseph Studebaker, was taken captive by the Delaware, along with a younger brother and sister. Their parents were killed. Young Joseph lived with his Delaware father for ten years. As an adult, Mary met a couple, Terry Red Hawk Harris and his wife, Nancy White Feather Harris, both who had Native ancestry. Terry organized a group called The American Métis Aboriginal Association, for those with Native ancestry, but not enough to be recognized by federal tribes. Mary was adopted as Nancy's sister and her husband, Marty, by Terry as his brother. Mary studied and became a Spiritual Leader and eventually the Head of the National Council of Elders.view less
