His father was a penniless author and they lived in a fairy tale castle in the Scottish hills.
Many years later he discovered writing and worked out he could make a living by explaining things to people. He also found that people like his stories of travelling, especially about his 9 Months in Tibet which is the name of his first travel book.
Now he lives in England, on a houseboat called Marge on the River Thames. He likes to inspire people to write, travel independently and overcome their fears.
