He was also athlete of the year two consecut...view moreFive years after having arrived in the US Virgin Islands, Laurence Huntley had acquired three college degrees from the University of the Virgin Islands. He was also athlete of the year two consecutive years as a varsity team member in 4 sports. Eleven years after his arrival in St. Croix as a bus boy at the Estate Carlton Hotel, he was appointed Assistant Director of Tourism in the Department of Commerce. He won Professional Leader of the Year in his first year in the Commerce Department. He had worked in management at Eastern Airlines on the east coast and sales and marketing in the Midwest before returning to the Virgin Islands. While attaining his graduate and post-graduate degrees at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, he was awarded the graduate student of the year award and the following year while teaching at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, he earned his post-graduate degree in Industrial Vocational Technology Education. He later served on South Holland, Illinois’s School Board and their Human Relations Commission. While teaching in Chicago, he served as union delegate for the Teacher’s Union, teacher representative on the Local School Council at two schools and was Chairman of the Teachers Professional Advisory Council. He served on the City of Chicago Advisory Council on African and African American Affairs for the last two decades and has written meaningful proposals for the abatement of youth violence in the African and Latino communities. He has written a revolutionary plan to address the socio-economic problems of blighted urban communities and providing meaningful employment for returning veterans. It is at the African Council, he met Ernie Tucker who respected his very analytical mind and later asked if he would be willing to write his biography.
