Although I like the idea of one of the protagonists in a story having a split personality, I had some trouble with the way this sensitive issue was handled in this book.
Shyann left home following the long, painful death of her mother in order to pursue a career in television news. After graduating from college, she fumbles her first assignment, quickly ending her career, and she must return home in order to earn some money and pick up the pieces of her life. When she is forced to take a job in her father's construction company, she meets Lucas, who has also taken a job there, but he is harboring a secret - a second personality called Gage who may have murdered his mother, sister, and brothers. Shyann is filled with unresolved hostility toward her home and her father. When she discovers that Lucas has also lost his mother, she is drawn to him, even though she fears Gage.
This intriguing idea led to a wonderful beginning of this book, but by the middle, many of the difficult issues of mental disorders and grief were oversimplified. The ending was a little too quick with the main conflicts too easily resolved. This story might have been better as a series - written over several books - giving the protagonists more time to deal with these sensitive issues in a more believable manner. Overall, not a bad book, but it could have been better.

Romance lovers looking for a fresh, creative story will fall in love with Split! Please note though that this story deals with some pretty extreme domestic abuse and is sure to tear your heart before giving you the incredibly satisfying and comforting feeling that even the most damaged souls can find their love match, so this story may not be for every romance lover.

A man on the run from the unknown--given his frequent bouts with blackouts--but who believes he has tangled with evil finds his way to the small town of Payson, Arizona where he is finally able to fly under the radar doing construction work and mostly keeping to himself. Enjoying the semblance of normal for the first time in his life, his control slowly begins to be challenged by a woman (Shyann) who he unsuccessfully tries to ignore.

Shyann tried to get away from her small home town of Payson--there are just too many painful memories of her past lingering their--but just when she had started to experience some success, the past blows back in with its strangling hold on her emotions which leads to her losing her job as a budding journalist. Not wanting to return home, but with little prospects for a future job, she returns to Payson until she can find her next gig.

Back at home, she begins working for her father's construction business and meets Lucas. A chance meeting has them sharing a pretty personal moment but yet he seems strangely shut off to exploring if something more is possible. Intrigued Shyann makes it her mission to discover the real Lucas which sets off a whole cataclysmic chain of events. Will the man who has wandered his whole life from town to town trying to find a place to call home, and the woman who has sought to escape hers, finally find solace in each others arms?

All in all, Split is a special story that will give you a glimpse into a world that you may not have been exposed to before. I loved the character development in this tragic and yet uplifting story, and definitely felt myself anxiously awaiting the next page for the resolution of suspense arc, as well as, to determine if the fragile, budding romance could possibly lead to a HEA under this very unusual set of facts.
