About this audiobook

After a decade apart, childhood sweethearts reconnect by chance in New York Times bestselling author Christina Lauren’s touching, romantic novel Love and Other Words…how many words will it take for them to figure out where it all went wrong?

The story of the heart can never be unwritten.

Macy Sorensen is settling into an ambitious if emotionally tepid routine: work hard as a new pediatrics resident, plan her wedding to an older, financially secure man, keep her head down and heart tucked away.

But when she runs into Elliot Petropoulos—the first and only love of her life—the careful bubble she’s constructed begins to dissolve. Once upon a time, Elliot was Macy’s entire world—growing from her gangly bookish friend into the man who coaxed her heart open again after the loss of her mother...only to break it on the very night he declared his love for her.

Told in alternating timelines between Then and Now, teenage Elliot and Macy grow from friends to much more—spending weekends and lazy summers together in a house outside of San Francisco devouring books, sharing favorite words, and talking through their growing pains and triumphs. As adults, they have become strangers to one another until their chance reunion. Although their memories are obscured by the agony of what happened that night so many years ago, Elliot will come to understand the truth behind Macy’s decade-long silence, and will have to overcome the past and himself to revive her faith in the possibility of an all-consuming love.

I often avoid very emotional books because life is heart wrenching enough that I prefer reading to be my escape. Every once in a while a sad book sneaks in and I am with the characters as they work through the hard stuff to get to the happy ending. This was definitely one of those books. I feel like a wrung our dishrag right now, but I also feel, as usual that The Christina Lauren duo wrote an excellent story. It is different than their others, which are funny and sexy and erotic where this was more emotional without so much of the rest. It is the sign of a gifted author who can create something totally different that they have in the past and have it still be so good.

The little blurb that says "A true joy from start to finish." Fuck you! Why am I ugly crying?

I was so disappointed after reading another great book by this author. This one just missed the mark for me. Maybe because it took too long to figure out their motivations - I spent most of the book incensed by their treatment of each other and the fact that after 11 years they were still so affected and behaving so childishly. Understanding truly came at the very end, and I was still annoyed. I did not connect with these characters and the whole Sean situation seemed truly unnecessary.

It was boring and dragged on for too long. Felt like a wannabe Coho book.

This book means everything to my heart, I am full of happiness and tearing up at the same time!!

Normally I love grumpy book boyfriends turned mushy, but this is pure gold. Read this and cherish it. It is a childhood best friends to lovers to second chance romance to lovers trope!! And I absolutely adored this novel.

I loved the past and present pov, yeah we only get Macy's pov however it is still so beautifully written, it felt very lyrical and vivid. How we watch their friendship evolve and develop in the past pov, and watch them try to reconcile 11 years later after no contact. Not knowing what happened kept me on the edge of my seat wanting more and needing to know.

Elliot is such a beautifully written character. He is such an amazing book male friend that I want to cherish forever. I loved his mannerisms, personality, and his genuine, honest, and raw love for Macy.

Thank you Christina Lauren for this wonderful piece of literature that I will forever hold near and dear to my heart.

Mind numbingly stupid. The flashbacks were boring, the story itself was predictable and the two main characters fallout was ridiculous and unbelievable. At almost thirty, they both still act like teenagers. I cannot believe this book is anywhere near as highly rated as it is.

The narrators whiny, monotonous voice possibly also made the book worse. I’m not sure if that was the voice actors take on the whiny main character or whether that’s how she was directed to do it but oh my goodness was it annoying.

Enjoyed the book, did not like the narration. Felt like she was whispering the whole time. Her voice had a teary-emotional quality throughout the entire thing, even the parts that didn’t call for it.

Entertaining and a good page turner. A nice light read during times when you're too busy to concentrate on more complex stories

For about 3/4 of the book I was truly invested. The developing relationship between Elliot and Macy as teens is so honest and authentic. But the climatic reveal of why they spend 11 years apart was incredibly disappointing and rushed, also Elliot is never truly held accountable for his actions. Which was extremely annoying and made the final chapters of the book feel forced ruining the gripping narrative up until this point.

Incredibly written! The anticipation throughout the book and the story telling from 'then' & 'now' was so well done. Not predictable at all, and I even cried. Loved every minute.

I loved it! No surprise there, since I discovered this amazing author duo last year, I've enjoyed every backlist book ive read from them so far!

I just devour these books, Christina Lauren have such an amazing writing style that grabs my attention and sucks me right in from the start. A second chance love story told in alternating time lines. Macy and Elliot meet and fall in love. They sparked a relationship from their bond over books and words, perfect for us booklovers right! Although something didn't work out because 11 years later they run into eachother again at a coffee shop and that spark is still there. But it's not that easy as just getting back together. This was definitely a fast paced coming of age love story that definitely pulled at my heartstrings.

Too slow, unfortunately I quickly got bored.

And this justification is despicable. Being drunk is no excuse...

On a side note: My dad came over while I was reading a specific part and SOBBING, so that was fun. Lol.

Such a great story. Fell in love with the characters instantly. Based on other reviews i was worried this would be too sad, but the only very sad part (crying) was close to the end. I wish there was an epilogue or some extra story at the end. I needed more time to recover and soak up the ending.

I loved this book. It’s the first book in a while that I had to re-listen to almost immediately. I wish the epilogue was a part of the audio version, but it’s not. I’d recommend going back and reading that portion, it’s from Elliot’s pov and wraps the story up in a perfect bow.
