About this audiobook

Deadly secrets are buried on Amber Beach ...

Donovan International is a power to be reckoned with in the dazzling and cutthroat worldwide gem trade -- and is therefore a target for the murderous greed of unscrupulous competitors. Though a shrewd businesswoman, Honor Donovan has been effectively shut out of the dangerous family enterprise by the Donovan males -- until her favorite brother, Kyle, mysteriously vanishes along with a fortune in stolen amber.

Now, linking up with ""fishing guide"" Jake Mallory -- whose previous association with the Donovans has bred mistrust and suspicion -- Honor sets out for the Pacific Northwest in search of answers. But old wars and new politics have lured ruthless, high-stakes players from around the globe into a deadly game. And suddenly, elusive trust can be the only salvation -- and death the penalty for deceit -- if Honor and Jake hope to survive the perilous intrigues surrounding a breathtaking lost Czarist treasure known as the Amber Room ...

Honor Donovan is a feisty, beautiful, smart, and courageous sister of one missing Kyle Donovan. In other words, she is perfect. Her one flaw is that she has no idea what happened to beloved brother Kyle and will stop at nothing to find him.  Enter two other brothers and family secrets. Honor doesn't know of the rumors concerning Kyle. One story is he stole a crap load of valuable amber, killing someone in the process. Now it is believed he's in hiding along with that millions of dollars worth of amber. But that's not how the rest of the Donovan clan see it. Their story is they think Kyle was killed by his business partner, Jake "Jay" Mallory. Sexy, brooding, strong as an ox, smart as a whip, perfect specimen of a man, Jake only wants to clear his name. Okay, and find the precious amber. His side of the story is simple, he thinks he's been framed by his friend and business partner, Kyle Donovan. Jake cleverly answers Honor's ad for a fishing guide (lie). In reality she wants to learn how to run Kyle's boat so she can search for him. Jake pretends to be a fishing guide but really wants to teach Honor how to run Kyle's boat so he can get to Kyle first. Naturally, they fall into bed together before they can learn of each other's mutual betrayal. Will their mutual attraction survive the lies? Will they find Kyle? Who is the guilty one, Kyle or Jake?

First of a series. I enjoy all the detail Lowell puts into her books. Made all the info about amber very interesting.

Fast paced mystery with a little romance thrown in to keep things juicy. The Donovan family has trouble finding one brother and a fortune in amber. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Stolen by the Germans in WWII, the fate of the Czar’s famous Amber Room remains a mystery to this day. Honor Donovan has come to Anacortes, WA to search for her brother, Kyle, who is believed to have stolen, once again, a piece of the amber that came from that room. To help her, Honor has hired Jake Mallory to teach her to drive her brother’s boat so that she can search the San Juan Islands for answers. As is typical for this type of novel, Jake has his own agenda in the matter, some of which directly involves the sparks of attraction between Honor and himself. Despite the usual cast of characters and predictable plot line, this is a fun, fast read for the simple pleasure of immersing one’s self in another time and place.

This book and the rest of the Donovan series are among the books I return to time and again. I know they are considered "romance" novels but I love the mystery/suspense part best. The author puts a lot of information about the stones being dealt with in each book. Makes for an interesting way to learn something new. This series began my dream of one day collecting gemstones ... and now I DO.

I thought this was just all right. I went into it expecting just a romance, so I wasn't expecting much out of the plot. However, I was *so* glad when they finally had sex, because I was getting a little tired of the constant mention of the sexual tension. I really didn't feel like reading about how tight his pants were every time he looked at her. What an easy guy! Really, this was very thin on plot, and the conclusion was too neat and tidy for my tastes.
