The last week of August

An August page from my frequent companion... The Country Diary Of An Edwardian Lady by Edith Holden from 1906... written by someone from the area where my husband was born and lived his early life in Warwickshire near Stratford-on-Avon.

This week I have been hibernating, as the air coming from the Canadian wildfires has been in the unhealthy level. I have been dealing with headaches, itching eyes and breathing problems. So, the air conditioner and air cleaners are at work! I don't have much desire to be out at the moment, but still missed my weekend visits to the farmer's market and to church services. Hopefully back to normal in a couple of days.

I have had extra time to work on the chores from my website that have backed up over the last year, now that I have done with most of the chores and paperwork necessary after the loss of a spouse.  I am also tending to things that piled up in my office, as they were back in the line of importance behind the necessary things necessitated by my caregiver role. I find myself with empty time, that was otherwise regimented by the 24 hour a day 4 hour medications and nutritional needs of my husband's Parkinson's disease.

But....

I need some clarity and direction through prayer about what my new reality of life will look like. I know it's only been a few weeks, so I am trying to remain at peace and wait for clarification.

In the meantime, as was our mantras for the last couple of years especially...

One Day At A Time

and

We Can Do This... only now it is

I Can Do This... through the Grace of God

"I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me"  Philippians 4:13... which has been proven so true.

So... this week, here are some of the items I have added to Antiques And Teacups

And more... but that's a sample.
I hope this week brings you joy and the appreciation of the many gifts we have... many so simple and small we overlook them...
and the people we may take for granted and also overlook...
so many treasures to be discovered!

Dungeness Crab And Seafood Festival 2019, By The Sea Dunoon Mug

By the sea, by the sea, by the beautiful sea...We can sing that a lot around here!

The post I had planned to do today, was interrupted by the happy news that our daughter and son in law were arriving from out of state.
So, it was drop everything and get prepared! Happy chores!
But the photo editing of our recent trip to a special tea house in Victoria, BC will have to wait!

So I am focusing on our seaside location, with a Dunoon, England mug...

In a design by Emma Ball called By The Sea...

Love the watercolor drawings of bathing huts, boats, seagulls, deck chairs and a lighthouse,

With the poem throughout:
Oh we do like to be beside the seaside...
Brightly painted beach huts,
A very British thing!

Available in my shop.... Antiques And Teacups

The annual Dungeness Crab and Seafood Festival in Port Angeles was earlier in the month. PA as we call it) is about 15 miles away, and is where the ferry leaves on the route to Victoria, BC Canada.  Here are some of the photos I have taken at the Festival. Heavy rain had been forecast, but we had our time at the festival and got home before it started.

The Port Angeles Community Pier Clock Tower, the main approach to the festival.

The first order of business is always lunch! The main crab feed plate is corn on the cob and coleslaw from Nash's Organic Farm in Sequim and lots of seafood. The Dungeness crab gets it name from our area...just by Sequim is the Dungeness Spit and Dungeness Lighthouse near the place where the Dungeness River dumps into the ocean. All of the crab had been freshly caught in the last 2 days and kept in tanks until....well, you know!

Above are the huge pots of crab, and below, what I always have...Local Halibut and chips. The halibut was locally caught the day before as well. The best!!!

Outside there was crab for sale, cleaned or not...the high school football team was cleaning it as a fund raiser at $2.00. Then there were crab derbies, arts and crafts, and other seafood and carnival type food booths. The fav outside was the grilled fresh scallops on basil pesto rice.  Here are some other sights around the festival:

And of course, crab was available to take home... wrapped up in the traditional newspaper!

And the local high school fund raising crab cleaning station for those who either want to eat a freshly cooked one right there, or take it home.

Then, of course, local artists and vendors had a fair on the grounds as well.
And, as you can see, a lot of folks dress up in honor of the Dungeness Crab!
What can be more fun than local festivals!
Oh, and there was a tea seller too, so even better!

Tuesday Cuppa Tea, The London Transport Art

Hi and welcome to Tuesday Cuppa Tea! Kind of a different theme this week...again, things spin off what's in my life!

My teacup this week...is a tea mug! A Dunoon, England bone china mug in a London transport design by famous British watercolourist Emma Ball.  Dunoon began with stoneware in Scotland...hence the name...but for the last 20 years has focused on their bone china business in Stone, a suburb of Stoke-on-Trent in the potteries.

Sometimes it's tea in a cup and saucer, but sometimes it's a mug. Yesterday I sat in the sunroom with this mug full of a tea with a scone, and was going through my engagement calendar when...inspiration struck!

The mug is such a compilation of London landmarks...and many around transportation themes...

And voila...I looked at the engagement calendar...

And there you have it! In the early 20th century, the London transport system of tube trains, trains and buses employed the best artists of the day to make advertising posters for the routes and places they served. They are so very evocative of the times and places, so I thought I'd share a few with you...

Viktor Hembrow, 1927...above

Robert John Gibbings, 1922

Elijah Albert Cox, 1916

Dora M. Batty, 1932

F. Gregory Brown, 1916

Haddock, 1912

What a fabulous glimpse of England and London in those departed days! I don't want to give this blog post a picture overload, so will do a blog post on Wednesday on the London Transport Museum...a place we love to visit. So...here is the linky for your tea related post and a list of some of the blogs I am visiting. Until then...

Teacup Tuesday, Birthday Lunch, Sand Sculpture Contest

Hello my lovelies! Welcome to Tuesday Cuppa Tea! It's a mixed bag today...and I must confess I am hurrying to get this posted before the closing ceremonies of the London Olympics. Hope I don't make too many typpos!!!

I don't have a cup and saucer today but beach themed mugs from Dunoon, England that were designed by British watercolor artist Emma Ball. We have had 4 consecutive days in the hi 70s to low 80s which is summer here, and it's made me think of summer scenes.

English beach huts are such a national thing. They line the shores...which are usually pebbles, not sand...and are often gaily colored and lovingly decorated.

These watercolours are so evocative of days spent in Looe, Cornwall. We spent several weeks there and loved the area. Can't you just hear the gulls call and the water lap and shusssssh against the pebbly beach???

For my birthday last week, we went to one of our favorite restaurants, Alder Wood Bistro here in Sequim.  Alder Wood is a wood fired oven organic restaurant drawing from the organic farms in the area and serves literally 1-3 hours old seafood, and awesome pizza. We usually have the cedar planked fish with baby organic vegetables, but had something different this time. And wouldn't you know I'd forget my camera!!??  The photos here are from previous visits. The waitress is a friend, and she even brought me a special edible flower decked dessert with a candle, but no camera! What a doufus!!!!!
Alder Wood has a national, and even international following. Always yummy!!!

2 weeks ago we went to Port Angeles 10 miles away, for the annual Art In Action Sand Sculpture competition. We always go on the Friday when the artists are actually working, because we love to see the process. The octopus above is one of the permanent sculptures that festoon the downtown area and this is right at the Community pier where the contest and street fair was held.

First it was through the booths of the street fair to get to the beach where the sand artists from 8 countries...

A Hollywood Charlie Chaplain sculpture in process....

A prize winning sculpture called Metropolis....

One of the local radio stations KONP even had the engineers and disc jockeys involved....

A Canadian tea's Canadian Mountie and emerging dog with a sled beside it was a popular sculpture

The People's Choice was a response to the shootings at the Dark Knight a few days before. They have a gun and the caption "This Is The Weapon Of The Enemy".

We had a great time. It's fascinating to watch them work. There are cash prizes, and some of the artists come back every year. There is a huge food court so you don't leave hungry. A wonderful, fun summer event!

Here is the linky and the list of some of the blogs I am visiting/participating. Also...for more info on the mugs at Antiques And Teacups, click on those photos.

Have a great day, and a cuppa tea!
