Swedish American

Remembrances is an English translation of the first published history of the Swedish Evangelical Free Church. The book was originally published in 1914 in Swedish under the title Minnesskrift (Remembrances). It covers the years 1884 to 1914.  The book contains the history of the Swedish Free Church in America as these independent or "free" churches in America began to cooperate in mission, ordination, and education. It contains local church histories and biographical sketches of the pioneer preachers. It contains a final chapter on the Swedish Bible Institute of Chicago which later became known as Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.

There are several different theories and frameworks, such as cultural creolization, that explore the creation of immigrant identity. Creolization is originally a linguistic concept describing the unique languages that emerge when mutually unintelligible language communities come in contact with one another. In folklore, however, the term is used to explain new cultural folkways, which emerge locally and often in response to dominant groups who exercise control over another group. It is important to note that this process is one that examines mutually unintelligible contact situations. This article presents a new framework that I call folkloristic koineization to examine immigrant ethnic identity.

A koiné is a dialect or new language that emerges after prolonged contact between mutually intelligible languages. Early linguistic theorists of the koiné initially defined both regional and immigrant koines while more recent work has focused on proposing principles that systematize the formation process called koineization. Koineization explains the formation of unique languages in immigrant contact systems and how and why certain features are maintained through that contact. The koineization process can also be used to explain how and why certain features of unique cultural expressions—forms of folklore especially—are maintained and created.

Immigrant ethnic identities, such as Swedish American, are a conglomeration of different yet mutually intelligible ideas, forms, and practices, which emerge through the koineization process over the course of several generations of prolonged contact. The questions of how and why a relatively uniform immigrant ethnic identity develops from the regional diversities of an immigrant group’s home country guides this article's examination of a folkloristic koiné, comprised of seven principles of koineization. These principles help to describe the formation of an ethnic identity of Swedish Americans using examples from fieldwork in the Upper Midwest.

The Scandinavian Mission of the Azusa Street Revival began in 1907 and was led by Cenna Osterberg who was present at the Bonnie Brae Street meetings in 1906, as well the first meetings at 312 Azusa Street. This Swedish speaking group, birthed in the Azusa Street Revival that was led by William Seymour, sent missionaries to China, Sweden, and the South Pacific. In 1913, this Scandinavian daughter mission of the Azusa Street Mission, organized as a local congregation, and associated with the Swedish Evangelical Free Church of America.

Records from 1878 to 1891 were initially recorded on forms with handwritten headings, and later transcribed by church members, onto Universal Church record forms printed with headings, done by the Baptist church. This double listing, for early members, created 2 sets of Chronological numbers, for these early members who's information was copied, from the old forms to the new. Translations of the headings from handwritten forms are in back. [need to add] as well as the new printed headings. Along with the initial chronological number upon joining the church, a person also received a new chronological order number, when they rejoined the church, after leaving. *

The Azusa Street revival is regarded as the cradle of the modern Pentecostal movement with over 500 million Christians around the world today. Pentecostals are grateful for the well-known leaders such as William Seymour and William Durham, but also for lesser-known leaders like Cenna Osterberg, a Swedish-American Pentecostal evangelist who worked with both of these men. Her evangelistic work followed her throughout her life, including the planting of what became the Swedish Evangelical Free Church of Los Angeles.
