This study was carried out to determine the effects of adhesive ratio and pressure time on thickness swelling (TS), internal bond (IB), modulus of rupture (MOR), and modulus of elasticity (MOE) properties of oriented strand board (OSB). For this purpose, 80 mm long strands made of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) were bonded with phenol-formaldehyde resin at three different ratios (3, 4.5, and 6%) to produce three-layer cross-aligned OSBs. Strands used for the production of OSB panels were made up 40% of core layer and 60% of outer layers. The panels were pressed for three different press times, from 3, 5, to 7 minutes, under 0.4 MPa pressure, aiming for a target density of 0.70 g/cm3. TS, IB, MOR, and MOE properties of OSB panels were evaluated according to the standards (TSE EN 117-319-310). Results showed that MOR and MOE values were changed in the ranges 25.31 to 42.27 N/mm2, and 2848.90 to 6545.63 N/mm2, respectively. Also, the results showed that as adhesive ratio and pressure time increased, the TS, MOR, and MOE values increased too.

For the horizontal stability of timber framed buildings, diaphragm action in the walls is of crucial importance. The structural behaviour and capacity of wall diaphragms are primarily dependent on the sheathing-to-timber connections. Holding down and shear transfer are limiting criteria of importance. Tests on connections between sheathing panel and wood stud were carried out. Different types of sheathing materials and connectors were combined. OSB with different thickness (12 and 15 mm) and gypsum-fibre panel were tested. Nails and staples were used to connect the panels to the wooden studs. Monotonic and cyclic destructive tests were performed on different connections to determine how the different systems behave. Comparison between different standard were carried out.

The composites of natural fibers are products known in several parts of the world, however their utilization is relatively restrict due to the lack of information concerning their properties and structures. Lignocellulosic fibers present high length/thickness relation, which contributes to the biodegradation and continuity of the ecological cycle. Such fibers present low density and enable a lower cost in composites manufacture, playing an important role in the definition of their physical and mechanical properties. The cane bagasse is a residue derived from sugar cane, a commercially important product in Brazil, with a high concentration of fibers, high content of lignin, which is a factor of environmental impact, with future perspectives of use. The present paper aims to evaluate the density of cane bagasse as composites of long particles and their internal adhesion, as well as to verify their temperature until decomposition and suggest their possible future utilization. The requisites of this product in terms of limit values for the properties of OSB are defined by EN-300/2002 standard.

Tevfik BULUT1 ÖZET OSB'lerin sayısının artması ve mevcut OSB'lerin genişleme trendinde olması, hem merkezi yönetim hem de OSB'ler açısından yönetim ve denetim araçları gereksinimini, finansal kurumların ve T. C. Bilim, Sanayi ve Teknoloji Bakanlığı'nın kredilendirmede daha sağlam verilere dayanma ihtiyacını artırmıştır. Günümüzde modern iş hayatında finansal tablolar yaygın bir şekilde kullanılmakta ve sayısı gittikçe artan kişi ve gruplar finansal tabloların analizi ve yorumu ile yakından ilgilenme gereksinimi duymaktadır. Çalışma kapsamında OSB'lerin finansal performansının analizine yönelik özgün bir endeks ortaya konularak çalışma tamamlanmıştır. Uygulama sonuçlarına göre mikro düzeyde OSB yönetimi, makro düzeyde ise politika yapıcılar için çeşitli öneriler getirilmiştir.

OSB (Oriented Strand Board) is the most important development in the industry of wood products in recent years. However, mainly for reasons of cost industries use as adhesive resins that emit formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is considered a hazardous substance and its concentration indoors is restricted in many countries because of its reactivity, toxicity and pungent odor. This study aimed to attest the feasibility of production of OSB from resin with part of your component derived renewable resource (castor oil-based polyurethane) and Pinus sp. The panels were produced technically evaluated by determining their mechanical properties. In comparison to the minimum requirements of the European normative document EN 300 , average values were higher than the panels for structural use in special wet environment (OSB/4) by up to 41% and 58% modulus of elasticity (MOE) and of modulus of rupture (MOR) in bending parallel to the grain, respectively. Adherence internal reached values at least three times higher than OSB/4.

Oriented strand board (OSB) accounts for a large share of the market for sheathing and sub-floor underlay, but because of its lower dimensional stability when exposed to moisture, it has not completely replaced plywood. The manufacture of OSB represents one of the major ways in which value can be recovered from mountain pine beetle-killed wood. Large amounts of beetlekilled wood are being processed into OSB in western Canada. The main challenges associated with using this wood for oriented strand board are log dryness, greater brittleness, and the wood's propensity to break up into smaller fragments during the production of board strands, which reduces the composite's moisture resistance and dimensional stability. Log rehydration and modification of pressing schedules for OSB have enabled beetle-killed wood to be used in commodity-board production, but need remains to develop practical solutions to the problem of high water absorption and thickness swelling of boards.

Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) is the main infra-structure in SOA. It is responsible to make available, in a standard way, services from different platforms, implemented in different programming languages, and available from providers in a distributed environment. Despite of several patterns for SOA, there is no pattern for ESB. Vendors agree what are the responsibilities of ESB. However, each vendor has its own implementation of ESB. This work presents the main characteristics of ESB, and analises in practice the ESB implementation of Oracle, called as Oracle Service Bus.

Sanayi Devrimi’nden ve 2. Dünya Savaşı’ndan sonra ekonomik büyüme ve istihdam açısından vazgeçilmez bir unsur olan sanayileşme, bazı sorunlara da neden olmuştur. Sanayileşmedeki hızlı gelişim, şehirleşmeyi de etkilemiş; önceleri çeşitli nedenlerle kent merkezleri ve çevresinde yer alan işletmeler, zamanla kentlerin gelişimini olumsuz etkilemiştir. İşletmelerin büyümesiyle yatırımlar artmış ve yerleşim alanlardaki olumsuz etkiler daha çok hissedilmeye başlanmıştır. Endüstriyel işletmelerin çoğalmasıyla sistemsiz ve plansız şekilde kümeleşen
irili ufaklı sanayi kuruluşları, kentlerin görünümünü etkilemiştir. Böylece, sanayi faaliyetlerinin birlikte yürüdüğü, çevre sorunlarının kolay çözüldüğü, altyapı hizmetlerinin hazır sunulduğu, ağırlıklı olarak küçük ve orta ölçekli sanayinin faaliyet gösterdiği OSB modeli gündeme gelmiştir (Şahin ve diğ., 2016; Özer, 2008).
1. ORGANIZE SANAYI BÖLGELERI
OSB’ler, uygun bir alanda elektrik, ulaşım, su, kanalizasyon, ilk yardım gibi
olanaklarla donatılmış, genel ve teknik hizmetlerin sağlandığı, ekonomik ölçekli gruplanmış fabrikaların yerleşim birimleridir (Eyüboğlu, 2005). Bu bölgeler, sanayinin planlı, düzenli bir ortamda gelişmesine imkân sağlarken; işletmelerin yer seçim kararını kolaylaştırmakta ve üretim sürecinde bir dizi avantaj sunmakta (Damalı, 2000), düzenli şehirleşme ve istihdamın geliştirilmesinin yanı sıra alt yapı hizmetleriyle de kuruluş yeri üstünlüğü sağlamaktadır (Eyüboğlu, 2005). OSB’lerin sağladığı olanaklar, verimliliği arttırırken; maliyetleri düşürme avantajıyla karlılığı yükseltmektedir. OSB’ler, sistemli ve düzenli çevre stratejilerinin oluşturulması ve kuvvetli sanayileşme politikalarının yaşama geçirilmesi açısından önem arz eden yerleşimlerdir ve örneklerine tüm dünyada rastlanmaktadır. OSB’lerin, çevreye duyarlı düzenli kentleşmenin yanı sıra bölgelerin ekonomik ve sosyal yapılarının gelişmesine de önemli katkıları vardır (Koç ve Bulmuş, 2014).1.1. 19. yy. sonlarına doğru sanayinin öneminin artmasıyla; işletmelerin işbirliklerini sağlamak, çalışanların yeteneklerini geliştirmek amacıyla, fabrikaların kurulabileceği alt yapıların oluşturulması amaçlanmıştır. İngiltere’nin Manchester kentinde 1897’de kurulan Trafford Park, bunun ilk örneğidir. Sonraki yıllarda birçok ülkede benzer sanayi bölgeleri oluşturulmuştur (Cansız, 2008). Türkiye’de 60’larda başlayan planlı kalkınma döneminde sanayileşmeye önem verilmesi, özel
sektörün desteklenmesi, sanayinin lokomotif sektör olması vb. uzun vadeli hedefler belirlenmiştir (1.Kalkınma Planı, 1963). Bu hedefler doğrultusunda 1961’de
kurulan Bursa OSB, 1966’da resmi olarak hizmet vermeye başlamıştır (http://www.bosb..). OSB’lerin hızla çoğalması ve ekonomide önemlerinin artması tüzel kişilikten yoksun olmaları sebebiyle yasal düzenleme gerektirmiş ve 2000’de 4562 sayılı OSB Kanunu çıkarılmıştır (https://www.oaib...).
1.2. Organize Sanayi Bölgelerinin Statüleri
OSB Kanunu’nun yürürlüğe girmesinden sonra çeşitli mevzuat düzenlemeleri gerçekleşmiştir. Uygulamalarda tespit edilen eksikler nedeniyle 17.01.2008 tarih ve 26759 sayılı Resmi Gazete’de “Organize Sanayi Bölgeleri Yer Seçimi Yönetmeliği” ve 22.08.2009 tarih ve 27327 sayılı Resmi Gazete’de “Organize Sanayi Bölgeleri Uygulama Yönetmeliği” yayınlanmış ve yeni bazı düzenlemeler yapılmıştır
(https://osbuk.org...). OSB’lerin kuruluş ve işletme işlemleri ilgili yönetmeliklere tabidir. Ülkemizde 334 adet Organize Sanayi Bölgesi mevcuttur. Bunlar 5 ayrı statüdedir:
Karma OSB’ler: farklı sektörlerde faaliyet gösteren üretim tesislerinin yer aldığı bölgelerdir.
İhtisas OSB’leri: aynı sektör ve alt sanayi kollarının üretim gerçekleştirdiği; kendi içlerinde bir bütünlük taşıyan sanayi yatırımlarının bir araya geldiği bölgelerdir.
Özel OSB’ler: gerçek veya tüzel kişiler tarafından kendi mülkleri üzerine kurulan üretim bölgeleridir.
Tarıma Dayalı İhtisas (TDİ) OSB’leri: hayvansal veya bitkisel üretim gerçekleştiren işletmelerin ve bu işletmelerde üretilen ürünlerin işlenmesine yönelik sanayi tesislerinin yer aldığı mal ve hizmet üretim bölgeleridir. Islah OSB’leri: 1/7/2017’den önce mer’i plana göre yapılaşan sanayi tesisi alanlarının ıslahı ile oluşan bölgelerdir. Ülkelerin, ekonomik gelişimlerinde önemli rol oynayan sanayi işletmelerini ortak alanlarda toplayıp etkin faaliyet sahaları oluşturmak, desteklemek, aralarındaki ilişkileri geliştirmek, çevre sorunlarını en aza indirmek, doğru kentleşme
ortamı sağlamak amacıyla politikalar belirlenmektedir. OSB’lere benzer şekilde önem verilmekte olan ülkemizde bu bölgelerin kuruluş amaçları:
• Sanayinin disipline edilmesi ve az gelişmiş-gelişmekte olan bölgelerde yaygınlaştırılması,
• Kentlerin planlı biçimde gelişmesi,
• Tamamlayıcı ve yan ürünleri teşvik eden girişimcilerin bir arada olmaları,
• Verimlilik ve kar artışının sağlanabilmesi,
• Tarım alanlarının sanayi tarafından tahribinin önlenmesi,
• Sağlıklı, ucuz, güvenilir ortak altyapı ve tesisler kurulması,
• Ortak önlemler ile çevre kirliliğinin önüne geçilmesi,
• Bölgelerin kendi organlarınca yönetilirken aynı zamanda devlet gözetiminde olmasıdır (https://www.oaib...).
2. KÜÇÜK VE ORTA BÜYÜKLÜKTEKI İŞLETMELER (KOBİ)
Tüm ülke ekonomileri açısından KOBİ’ler, düşük yatırım maliyetleriyle yeni iş olanakları yaratmaları, işsizlik sorununa çözüm olmaları, kişisel tasarrufları teşvik etmeleri, büyük işletmelerin yan sanayi tamamlayıcıları olmaları ve rekabet gücünü artırmaları konusunda son derece önemli ekonomik birimlerdir (Karadeniz ve diğ., 2015). Ülkelere göre değişiklik göstermekte olan KOBİ tanımı ülkemizde Resmi Gazete’nin 24.06.2018 tarihli sayısında Bakanlar Kurulu’nca yayımlanan 2018/11828 sayılı BKK ile belirlenmiştir. Buna göre KOBİ: “250 kişiden az yıllık çalışan istihdam eden ve yıllık net satış hasılatı veya mali bilançosundan herhangi
biri 125 milyon Türk Lirasını aşmayan ekonomik birimler veya girişimler” e (T.C Resmi Gazete, 2018) verilen isimdir. Dünyadaki üretim, büyük ölçüde KOBİ’ler tarafından karşılanmaktadır. AB’deki tüm işletmelerin %99’unu temsil eden KOBİ’ler, özel sektör istihdamının 2/3’üne sahiptir (Topal ve diğ., 2019). Benzer bir durum ülkemiz için de geçerlidir. TÜİK’in 2019 İş Kayıtları verilerine göre; ülkemizde toplam 3 milyon 646 bin 392 KOBİ ölçeğinde işletme bulunmakta olup; bu sayı, var olan işletmelerin %99.83’üne denk gelmektedir. Ayrıca Türkiye’de ithalatın %36’sı, ihracatın
%55,42’ü, istihdamın %64,1’i yine KOBİ’ler tarafından gerçekleşmiştir. Türkiye’de dış ticarette faaliyet ana alanına göre ihracatının %57,5’i, ithalatının ise %56,5’i sanayi sektörüne aittir. 2019’da ana faaliyeti ticaret olan girişimlerin ihracattaki payı %38,9 ithalattaki payı ise %31,6’dır. Bununla birlikte 2019’da sanayi sektöründe ihracatının %69,3’ü, 250+ kişi çalışanı olan büyük ölçekli girişimlerce yapılmıştır.Ticaret sektörünün ihracatının %91,4’ünü ise 1-249 kişi çalışanı olan KOBİ’ler gerçekleştirmiştir. Sanayi sektöründeki ithalatta 250+ kişi çalışanı olan büyük ölçekli girişimlerin payı %80 olurken; ticaret sektörü tarafından yapılan ithalatın %68,7’si, 1-249 kişi çalışanı olan KOBİ’lere aittir (TÜİK, 2019). Sanayi sektöründe ihracat ve ithalat, büyük oranda 250+ kişi çalışana sahip büyük işletmeler tarafından gerçekleştirilmektedir. Türkiye’de KOBİ’leri, KOSGEB, Tarım Bakanlığı, teşvikler, kalkınma ajansları ve kamu bankaları desteklemektedir (Topal ve diğ.,
2019). Buna rağmen üretim ve istihdamda en önemli yükü üstlenen sanayi sektöründeki KOBİ’lerin, dış ticarette etkin olmadıkları gözlenmektedir. Ülke ekonomilerinin temelini oluşturan KOBİ’lerin bir diğer önemi de, hemen her bölgeye yayılmış olmaları dolayısıyla ekonomik kalkınmanın dengeli şekilde yayılmasını sağlamalarıdır. Bu işletmeler, büyük işletmelerin kalıplaşmış ürünlerine alternatif
mamulleriyle ülke içi pazarın açıklarını da kapatmaktadırlar.
Öte yandan küçük işletmelerde yöneticiler koordinasyonda sıkıntı yaşamazken; işletme büyüdükçe ve departmanlar arttıkça ciddi yönetsel sıkıntılar ortaya çıkmaktadır. İşletmeler gelişirken etkinlik ve verimlilik yitirilmekte, planlar vaktinde yerine getirilememekte ve amaçlanan hedeflere ulaşılamamaktadır. KOBİ’lerde organizasyon ve yönetim problemlerini 5 başlıkta toplamak mümkündür.
Bunlar: planlama, organizasyon, yürütme, koordinasyon ve kontrol sorunlarıdır. KOBİ'lerde genellikle planlamaya gereken önem verilmemektedir. Ancak planlama, büyük işletmelere nazaran KOBİ’lerde daha önemli bir yere sahiptir. Çünkü bu işletmeler hatalı, eksik planlama kaynaklı hatalarını giderebilecek kaynaklara sahip olmayabilirler (Özgener, 2003). Çoğunluğu OSB’ler dahiline yer alan KOBİ’lerin sorunlarını aşabilmeleri için stratejik analiz ve planlara özel önem göstermeleri gerekmektedir. Dolayısı ilgili işletmelere yol haritası olabilmesi amacıyla
sonraki bölümde uygulanabilecek analiz ve dahası stratejilere dair yöntem ve önerilere yer verilmiştir.
3. STRATEJI OLUŞTURMA: DURUM BELIRLEME ANALIZLERI VE
İŞ STRATEJISI OLUŞTURMA
Tüm işletmeler gibi OSB’lerde yer alan KOBİ’ler de çevrelerinden doğrudan ya da dolaylı biçimlerde etkilenmektedir. Bu etkilerin belirlenebilmesi için iç ve dış çevre analizleri gerçekleştirilmekte; ardından stratejik planlar yapılmaktadır.
Stratejik planlar, yoğun rekabet ortamında işletmelere avantaj sağlayarak daha başarılı olmaları için yol haritaları çizmektedir. Böylece dış çevrede var olan fırsat ve tehditlerle, iç çevrede mevcut bulunan varlık ve yeteneklerin sağladığı üstünlük ve yarattığı zayıflıklar bir matris üzerinde sistematik biçimde belirlenebilmektedir (Ülgen ve Mirze, 2004). İşletme tarafından mevcut güçlü ve zayıf yönlerin, ayrıca muhtemel fırsat ve tehditlerin açıkça bilinmesi ve analiz edilmesi; yöneticilerinin stratejik seçimlerini kolaylaştıracak faktörlerdendir.

This experiment explored the technical feasibility of using bamboo zephyr mat with pre-hot-pressed treatment for the manufacture of laminated bamboo lumber (LBL), which is similar in construction to that of laminated veneer lumber (LVL). Six LBL boards (made from four-ply bamboo zephyr mats) with approximate dimensions of 2×42× 42cm were fabricated using resorcinol-based adhesive. The experimental design involved three combinations of layered structures (types I, II, and III) and two LBL loading positions (H-beam and V-beam) during the bending test. These materials were then compared to ordinary LVL. Results indicated that the bending properties (moduli of rupture and elasticity) of LBL were comparable to those of LVL, but there was no significant effect on the physical and mechanical properties among the three types of LBL beam. Interestingly, orienting the glue line to the vertical direction (V-beam) could maximize the ultimate strength of the LBL.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar as propriedades de chapas de 0riented Strand Board (OSB), fabricadas com flocos de madeira de Eucalyptus grandis, Eucalyptus urophylla e Eucalyptus cloeziana e oriundas dos Municípios de Ponte Alta e Três Marias, no Estado de Minas Gerais. As massas específicas básicas das três espécies de eucaliptos das duas regiões foram, respectivamente: Ponte Alta (0,55; 0,61; e 0,70 g/cm³) e Três Márias (0,56; 0,58; e 0,69 g/cm³). Quando necessário, para manter as massas específicas das chapas próximas de 0,70 g/cm³ foram acrescentadas às partículas de madeira de eucalipto partículas de madeira de Pinus elliottii, oriundo da cidade de Viçosa, com massa específica de 0,45 g/cm³. Additionally, two forms of MAPP (powder and emulsion) were used to determine the effect of MAPP type on panel properties. Panels were produced by combining southern yellow pine (Pinus spp.) flakes with 4 percent pMDI binder and 0, 1.5, 3, 4.5, or 6 percent powdered or emulsified MAPP. Addition of emulsified MAPP decreased panel mechanical properties regardless of addition level. Powdered MAPP had a negligible effect on panel modulus of elasticity and only produced significant decreases in panel modulus of rupture and internal bond strength at the highest addition level (6%). Emulsified MAPP effected greater reductions in panel mechanical properties relative to powdered MAPP. Increasing levels of emulsified MAPP caused undesirable increases in both 24-hour water absorption and thickness swelling. Powdered MAPP did not provide a significant improvement over control panels in water absorption and thickness swell tests. Addition of either powdered or emulsified MAPP appeared to have a negligible effect on panel permeance.

Short-rotation woody crops (SRWC) such as hybrid poplars are becoming increasingly competitive with agriculture on marginal land. The trees can be grown for energy and for traditional uses such as oriented strandboard. Using IMPLAN (Impact Analysis for Planning) software, we modeled the impacts of shifting land use from hay and pasture for cow-calf beef operations to hybrid poplars in northwest and west central Minnesota. Construction of a $175 million energy conversion facility capable of making 44 million gal of ethanol and 7.6 million gal of mixed alcohols by gasification/catalysis would create 2,412 jobs, with $158 million in value added. Facility operation, assuming establishment of 200,000 ac of hybrid poplar, did not substantially change the number of jobs relative to using the land for cow-calf operations. However, the SRWC-related jobs would likely be at higher average salary levels and business tax collections would be higher, resulting in a value-added increase of $80 million annually.

Tanulmányainkból pedig azt is tudjuk: a tihanyi apátság alapítólevele a magyar nyelv legkorábbi szórványemléke. Ugyanakkor a tihanyi bencés apátság köveknél és szavaknál jóval több! El objetivo general del presente estudio fue la modelación del ensayo de carga estática concentrada (Consentrated Static Load test, CSL) de acuerdo a Voluntary Product Standard PS 2-92 y APA PRP-108 y a través de este ensayo determinar la influencia de la distribución especial en las propiedades mecánicas localizadas en el comportamiento del OSB. Os resultados foram comparados utilizando-se as normas ANSI/A-208.1 (1993) e CSA 0437-93 (1993). As chapas contendo partículas acetiladas foram mais estáveis e adsorveram menos umidade. Na tração perpendicular, observou-se que as chapas contendo 100% de flocos acetilados apresentaram resultados inferiores ao estipulado pela norma CSA O437-0/93 (1993). A resistência ao arrancamento de parafuso, módulo de ruptura (paralelo e perpendicular) e compressão longitudinal (perpendicular), foi reduzida pela acetilação nas chapas contendo 100% dos flocos acetilados. As espécies que apresentaram, numericamente, as maiores médias para resistência mecânica foram: Eucalyptus grandis não acetilado (dureza Janka) e Eucalyptus cloeziana misturado com Pinus sp (módulo de ruptura). Somente a resistência à compressão longitudinal foi afetada pela região de origem da madeira. Os painéis fabricados com madeira de Eucalyptus urophylla, oriunda do Município de Três Marias, tiveram médias inferiores aos das chapas feitas com a mesma espécie, porém oriundas do Município do Rio Doce.

OSB panels were developed as a substitute for plywood. However, their properties in static bending, i.e. modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) are often reduced. The aim of this study was to evaluate MOE and MOR of OSB manufactured with Pinus sp. and castor-oil based polyurethane resin, applying a wire mesh in order to improve those properties. Recommendations of normative document EN 310:1993 were obeyed. Results showed that mechanical properties considered are compatible with codes requirements and with values obtained by several authors in related literature. In static bending tests, the difference between parallel-to-grain MOE and MOR values of panels with and without wire mesh treatment was not significant. Statistical analysis reveals that the wire mesh pressing position does not affect MOE and MOR. However, these values are superior to those recommended, for OSB and plywood, by normative documents.

Background: Commercial and residential buildings can become contaminated with molds, which may trigger allergic disorders. Mold remediation efforts may require costly replacement of mold-contaminated building materials. Disinfectants that contain dilute sodium hypochlorite can kill mold and are practical to use. Whether they also inhibit mold allergy symptoms is unknown. Objective: We tested the hypothesis that sodium hypochloritecontaining spray products kill Aspergillus fumigatus and inhibit A fumigatus allergens. Methods: A fumigatus was grown on 3 common building construction materials, as well as in solution by conventional laboratory methods. Two sodium hypochlorite-containing household products (diluted bleach and Tilex) were sprayed on the mold-contaminated materials or added to mold in solution and compared with untreated controls. Surface mold and associated debris were mechanically removed from treated and untreated boards. Conidia in the extracted board materials were quantified by light microscopy, examined for morphologic changes by scanning electron microscopy, and cultured for viable mold. Extracts were tested for A fumigatus antigen by ELISA, and for A fumigatus allergen by skin prick testing using extracts prepared from both the boards and the cultured solutions. Results: Both sodium hypochlorite disinfectants killed A fumigatus in solution and on mold-contaminated building materials. Light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy demonstrated changes to the conidial surface. Both dilute bleach and Tilex inhibited A fumigatus recognition by ELISA. Skin testing supported the results of the ELISAs and demonstrated loss of skin test reactivity to the sodium hypochlorite-treated mold solutions in most of the subjects. Of the 4 individuals who had a positive skin test result to mold grown on oriented strand board building material, 3 no longer reacted to extracts from bleach-treated boards. Conclusion: Spray application of sodium hypochloritecontaining disinfectants onto mold-contaminated building material kills A fumigatus, modifies the surface characteristics of A fumigatus conidia, reduces recognition of A fumigatus mold by ELISA, and results in loss of skin test reactivity to the treated mold in individuals allergic to A fumigatus. Now in its first of three years of running, this project aims to create, through an "eco-design of a factory" concept, a largely near self-sufficient production facility in Sanem (Luxembourg) with low environmental impact by combining the best practices in the field of production and use of energy, water and raw materials supply. The use of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) applied to the entire production site and then to specific products is envisioned for monitoring the progress towards near-zero environmental footprint and for communication purposes.

Short-rotation woody crops (SRWC) such as hybrid poplars are becoming increasingly competitive with agriculture on marginal land. The trees can be grown for energy and for traditional uses such as oriented strandboard. Using IMPLAN (Impact Analysis for Planning) software, we modeled the impacts of shifting land use from hay and pasture for cow-calf beef operations to hybrid poplars in northwest and west central Minnesota. Construction of a $175 million energy conversion facility capable of making 44 million gal of ethanol and 7.6 million gal of mixed alcohols by gasification/catalysis would create 2,412 jobs, with $158 million in value added. Facility operation, assuming establishment of 200,000 ac of hybrid poplar, did not substantially change the number of jobs relative to using the land for cow-calf operations. However, the SRWC-related jobs would likely be at higher average salary levels and business tax collections would be higher, resulting in a value-added increase of $80 million annually.
