Resumen: Partiendo del panorama general de la geografía árabe e islámica en los ss. XIV-XV, se analiza la geografía y cartografía que contienen las obras de Ibn Jaldūn, en especial el tratadito resumen de la geografía mundial que contiene la parte inicial de su Muqaddima. El propio autor afirma que toma geografía y cartografía de al-Idrīsī. Su finalidad es la de servir de parte introductoria a la historia, quedándose la geografía fuera del panorama de las ciencias que esboza el autor en su "Muqaddima". |  Abstract:  Starting from the general overview of Arab and Islamic geography in the 14th-15th centuries, the author analyses the geography and cartography contained in Ibn Khaldūn's works, especially the short summary treatise on world geography contained in the early part of his "Muqaddima". The author himself confirms that he takes geography and cartography from al-Idrīsī. Its purpose is to serve as an introductory part to history, geography being left out of the panorama of sciences outlined by the author in his "Muqaddima".  |

Talking about politics today isn’t that easy from the perspective of normal inhabitant in a specific area. In the Balkan for instance, as many dialogues are running on, one can simply lie down and observe the power of politics dealing with the human lives. In many discussions either you want to stay out of politics or not dealing with it, you realize that although you don’t want to be involved in the politics, the Politics is dealing with you in a most bizarre way.

The existence of many nations (read small nations), who went through the most tiny paths of biological existence, beginning with the lack of understanding and tolerance, consequently born radicalism, xenophobia, radical nationalism, mass expatriation (Kosova case) and genocide, (the case of Bosnia and Herzegovina), made the Politics a real looser for considering it as a tool in conflict resolution.  Yet the power, force and arm response, run by the world power countries, proved the efficiency of conflict resolution in single sided solutions without IJMAH (consensus) in Balkan case, disregarding the regional interest of certain Power country.

Ibn Khaldoun's visit to Tamerlane in 1401 was not intended to pay homage to him, but to validate his concept of Açabiyya with the prediction of the decline of the Tartar Empire linked to the weakening of the Açabiyya among the dispersed Tamerlane successors.

Ibn Khaldoun explained to Tamerlane that "universal empires oppose individual empires”. Only the first (Arab, Persian and Byzantine) are based on a cohesive force (açabiyya) that makes them able to survive. "

By analogy what are the emerging individual empires status today? China and India are two of them. Why Breaking-up of Arab World should affect rising of China and India?

My reading of Ibn Khaldoun leads me to the following reflection: In a context of decadence of Middle Eastern states, an end of all these sub states is inevitable; why rising of China should be slowed down? What influence should have the  breaking-up of the Asian part of the Arab World on the rise of China and India ?

The answer has got two folders : 1) Bursting related to the dissemination of Integrism in south east Asia,

2)  Recomposition : In case of concrete support of Asian strong states like China and India, in conformity with  change theory linked to the concept of "cohesion-force - Ibn Khaldun's açabiyya". This change started already in the 2011 by Tunisian revolution, followed by the Egyptian revolution and has been stopped dramatically by the war in Libya, Syria, and Yemen.

What is expected from those Asian strong entities to overcome breaking-up phenomena dissemination ? One of the urgent requirements is to rebuild all those cities positioned on the Silk Road trajectory like Aleppo in Syria in relation to the concept of cohesion-force. In case of this shall not happen, those individual empires shall fail in contributing to the Ascent of Asia as a universal empire.

Le livre de Samuel Huntington a bouleversé l’ordre mondial existant en renforçant les thèses extrémistes et le refus de dialogue (nord-sud ; occident orient). Pourtant les guerres qui ont eu lieu en ce début du 21ème siècle  (Irak, Afghanistan, Soudan, Libye)  et celle planifiée (Iran) ne semble pas apporter un bien-être aux populations libérées ni résoudre les différents problèmes des libérateurs (chômage, discrimination). Des sursauts ont eu lieu (printemps arabe, Occupy Wall street*) sans que la dynamique du changement semble l’emporter (victoire des islamistes en Tunisie, Égypte et bientôt Syrie) et sans que le pouvoir de la finance centralisée au niveau de quelques banques tel que Goldman Sachs et quelques Hedge Funds semble affaibli.
*D'autres sont porteurs d'espoir comme le mouvement PODEMOS qui vient de conquérir la mairie de Madrid en août 2015.

Au contraire le pouvoir des états semble de plus en plus marginalisé quelque soit les gouvernants (même discours de la droite et de la gauche en France
suivant qu’ils sont au pouvoir ou dans l’opposition, ne serait-ce qu’hier (lundi 3 septembre-2012) à propos de leur discours sur l’enseignement de la morale à l’école, ce discours  était totalement interchangeable, la même personne tenait un discours tout  à fait contraire à celui qu’elle tenait lorsqu’elle représentait le pouvoir exécutif et vice versa pour la personne qui était dans l’opposition et faisant partie aujourd’hui de la classe dirigeante ; les paroles prononcées étant les mêmes on peut conclure qu’il n’y a ni droite ni gauche, ce qui est fort grave avec la poussée du clonage et l’orientation vers une pensée universelle visant les mêmes objectifs (humiliation du faible quelque qu’elle soit son appartenance). Le choc des civilisations s’est réduit à un asservissement au sein d’une même population du plus faible ; et à un asservissement de la population la plus faible par celle qui porte le flambeau du progrès ; sachant que ce progrès a une composante technologique évolutive et marquant des jalons indiscutables (exploration de la planète mars, recul de la mortalité causée par le cancer et le sida) ; hélas la composante morale que les enseignants sont censés défendre auprès de leurs élèves est largement disproportionnée (prolifération du cannabis, émancipation sexuelle défiant toutes règles protégeant la famille du futur).

My reading of Ibn Khaldoun leads me to the following reflection: In a context of the decadence of Middle Eastern states, an end of all these systems is inevitable; a new Assabia will be reborn, some of whose pillars have been described by Aek Abid, but the collective work will continue to be safe from deadly conflicts and calls for reconciliation between "executioner and victim". "The açabiyya (عصبيه) or cohesive force is more necessary than ever, so Ibn Khaldun's prediction will be realized a few centuries later, the new generation will be honored by the path traced by this man of all ages.(21december2017)

This is an article that is forthcoming in Decolonization: Indigeneity, Education & Society. My main argument in this paper is that western hegemony, colonization, imperial and neocolonial domination over the Third World has been sustained through knowledge production that has become hegemonic on a global scale since the rise of western modernity. Furthermore, I argue that settler colonialism in Palestine took place and has been maintained through that structure. Formal independence of previously colonized countries has not led to real decolonization, not only because these countries continued to be economically and otherwise dependent on Western powers, but also importantly if not more so, due to dependency on knowledge produced in western academic institutions. For Palestine to be truly free from dependency in the future, academic institutions must rethink their goals from being neoliberal money making institutions to ones that aim at creating educated and free thinking subjects, rethink disciplines that are offered to students rather than blindly copy disciplines and their contents from western academic institutions, engage with decolonial thought that is produced

CHARACTERISTICS  OF THE CURRENT SYRIAN STATE AND THE GERMS OF ITS AGING FROM A READING OF ASSABIYA BY IBN KHALDOUN

The construction of Syrian society has always been from top to bottom under the sponsorship of a dominant state. Why this title and for what reason the author refers to the thought of Ibn Khaldoun especially highlighting the link that exists between religion and politics since the advent of Islam?
The entry into this article is the level of cruelty that characterizes the current repression and the passivity of part of the population that accompanies it. What instrument of analysis should be used to understand the state of destruction suffered by the people and the Syrian land?
A first interrogation is why this interference between the time of the apogee of the Moslem culture, Al-Nahda and the present time?
How was Ibn Khaldoun's concept of Al-Assabia (cohesive force) applied throughout these periods? The state in Syria has always been of voluntarist  nature. What characterized his overthrow in the past and possibly in the present is the "cycle" that moved from one Assabiya to another where wars erode the central state into sub-states dominated by sectarian interests and looting of fortunes by force of arms.
How to make a projection on the current situation in Syria?
How to compare the Assabiya from the Mamelukes, to that of the current rulers? And yet during the last two decades the system has made openings to the outside world and allowed the sharing of wealth with an emerging bourgeoisie? Why this opening has been overshadowed by a popular uprising in 2011? Why did the Ba'ath Party not be able to encompass the different components of society and let itself be dominated by a clan Assabiya that of the Alawites?
The inevitable fading of this state since voluntarist, must it go through a revolution?

Postulate: The state dies when it is weakened and the disease that prevails is then a "revolution". The difference between human death and the death of a state is that the latter, according to Ibn Khaldun, generates at the moment of death through the "cycle of Assabiya" of a new state.

Ronald Reagan l'a cité un jour, Mark Zuckerberg a choisi son grand ouvrage comme l'un des choix de son club de lecture et l'historien britannique Arnold Toynbee l'a décrit comme "sans aucun doute la plus grande œuvre de ce genre qui ait jamais été créée par un esprit quelconque, en tout temps et en tout lieu". Ce sont des témoignages assez inhabituels pour un historien nord-africain du 14e siècle, mais Ibn Khaldoun était alors un homme exceptionnellement doué. Sa Mouqaddimah est une introduction - ou un prolégomènes - à une histoire du monde beaucoup plus longue.
De telles histoires étaient courantes chez les écrivains arabes, mais personne avant lui n'avait développé une théorie aussi avancée sur les raisons de l'essor des civilisations et de leur déclin. Il s'est penché sur les facteurs matériels de l'histoire et a jeté un regard sceptique sur les récits et les contes extravagants des œuvres précédentes. Musulman fervent, il n'attribue cependant pas les événements uniquement aux ordonnances divines : le facteur humain l'emporte toujours.

CARACTERISTIQUES DE L’ETAT SYRIEN ACTUEL ET LES GERMES DE SON VIEILLISSEMENT D’APRES UNE LECTURE DE ASSABIYA D’IBN KHALDOUN

La construction de la société syrienne s’est effectuée depuis toujours du sommet vers la base sous l’égide d’un état dominant. Pourquoi ce titre et pour quelle raison l’auteur se réfère à la pensée d’Ibn Khaldoun surtout en soulignant le lien qui existe entre la religion et la politique depuis l’avènement de l’Islam ?
L’entrée en matière de cet article est le niveau de cruauté qui caractérise la répression actuelle et la passivité d’une partie de la population qui l’accompagne. Quel instrument d’analyse faut-il utiliser pour comprendre l’état de destruction subit par le peuple et par la terre syrienne ?
Une première interrogation pourquoi cette interférence entre l’époque de l’apogée de la culture musulmane, Al-Nahda et l’époque actuelle ?
Comment le concept d’Al-Assabia (force de cohésion) d’Ibn Khaldoun a-t-il été appliqué tout le long de ces périodes ? L’Etat en Syrie était depuis toujours d’une nature volontariste. Ce qui caractérisait son renversement dans le passé et éventuellement au présent c’est le « cycle » qui faisait passer d’une Assabiya à une autre où les guerres effritent l’Etat central en sous-états dominés par des intérêts sectaires et le pillage des fortunes par la force des armes.
Comment effectuer une projection sur la situation actuelle en Syrie ?
Comment comparer la Assabiya depuis les Mamelouks, à celle des gouvernants actuels ? Et pourtant durant les deux dernières décennies le système a effectué des ouvertures vers le monde extérieur et a autorisé le partage des richesses avec une bourgeoisie émergente ? Pourquoi cette ouverture s’est éclipsée par une révolte populaire en 2011 ? Pourquoi le parti Baath n’a pu englober lesdifférentes composantes de la société et s’est laissé dominer par une Assabiya clanique celle des Alaouites ?
L’évanouissement inéluctable de cet état puisque volontariste, doit-il passer par une révolution ?

Postulat : L'État meurt lorsqu'il est frappé d'incapacité et la maladie qui l’emporte est alors une «révolution». La différence entre la mort humaine et la mort d'un état est que cette dernière, d’après Ibn Khaldoun, engendre au moment de sa mort à travers le «cycle de la assabiya» d'un nouvel état.

In this article, we try to shine a spotlight on the construction of consumption's contemporary model. The beginning of the contemporary consumer model was in the United States where machine tools development and Scientific Management created a problem of manufactured goods abundance. Adopted solution was to stimulate consumption, which necessitated a change in the American society. This change was achieved through many ways. After building the basic model, many actions were done to perpetuate and export this model. Also, we try to make correspondence between Ibn Khaldoun's consumption cycle and model's evolution phases. At the end we propose a direction of future research.
