A fortaleza de Monsalud através das fontes durante o período formativo de al-Andalus Resumen: Aproximación histórica a la fortaleza de Monsalud durante los siglos VIII y IX a través de fuentes históricas como las Crónicas de Ben Hayyan o el Moro Rasis. Con especial atención a los acontecimientos protagonizados por rebeldes tan insignes como Mahmud o Ibn Marwan y su paso por dicha fortaleza. This work analyses the medieval fortress of Miravet (Cabanes, Castelló) and its territory. Its goals are therefore to explore the current state of the art in medieval archaeology research for this region and to propose new actions to address the reamining gaps in this field. Written and archaeological sources are here compiled in order to approach this study from a multifocal perspective. In this way, this text aims to establish connections among the research lines followed over the last few decades and, most importantly, to lay the foundations for new efforts so as to develop a better understanding of this stronghold and its possessions. Hopefully, these will crystalise into future archaeological excavations in the site, which will allow a systematic analysis of it.

The castle of Cot had been called hisn Aqût in the Arabic texts from the 9th to the 13th century. This name comes clearly from Latin acutus ('acute'), and refers to the conical form of the mount, in contrast with the flat mount of the contiguous mountain range of Montellano. Acut was fixed as a toponym, referring to the castle built at its peak by the surrounding population, hisn Aqût, a name that the Castilians interpreted as izna Cot or  'castle Cot '.
