Herbal Remedies

The paper deals with plant based folk practices used by the Meitei Community of Manipur used for the treatment of diabetes. Survey of locally available antidiabetic plants of Manipur was done for one year (January to December, 2009). Meiteis have been using herbal remedies as an alternative to modern medical facilities available in the state. Altogether 51 plant species were recorded. Proper documentation and preservation of these practices are essential.

The present study deals with 72-plant species distributed in 59-genera belonging to 33-families used as ethnomedicines for the heath care of the rural people in the Madukkarai Hills, Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu. The information on correct botanical identity with family, local name and traditional practices for the treatment of various ailments are discussed. This type of study on indigenous herbal medicine can serve to validate and enhance existing local uses and to provide clues to remedies having worldwide potential.

Medicinal plants are considered as a rich resource of ancient medicines and so many of them are used as a major ingredient of today's panacea that can be pharmacopoeic, non-pharmacopoeic, or synthetic drugs. They have been used to cure health disorders for the past thousand years. The ubiquitous use of folk remedies and health preparations is outlined in the Vedas and the Bible. Plant safety, quality, and efficacy assurance has now become a major issue in developing and developed countries. Cultural consequence and importance showing great demand for herbal and aromatic plants and following highlight point needed for the immense response in this field like encouraging the cultivation of medicinal plants having large market prospects. Research and evolution need to stand together for improving the manufacturing and efficiency of plants by establishing massive outcome through expanding collaboration between farmers and researchers.

Infusions prepared from medicinal herbs that are rich in flavonoids are very popular herbal remedies in societies of Eastern Europe. Therefore, the content of essential elements together with total flavonoids was analyzed in 65 commercially available samples of herbal drugs originating from Ukraine, Romania, and Belarus. The results showed that metallic elements (in mg kg(-1) d.w.) have occurred in the following order: Fe > Mn > Zn > Cu, both for total and water-extractable species. Total flavonoids were determined in the range from 10.0 to 191.8 mg g(-1) d.w. Several significant correlations have been found between the analytes, especially among water-extractable Fe with other metals, and total flavonoids and Fe, Zn, and Mn. In this narrative review, we have comprehensively reviewed the plant sources used as antiulcer agents. From traditional uses as herbal remedies, we have moved on to preclinical evidence, critically discussing the in vitro and in vivo studies focusing on plant extracts and even isolated phytochemicals with antiulcerogenic potential. A particular emphasis was also paid to activity, with emphasis on involved mechanisms of action. Lastly, the issue of safety profile of these plant products has also been addressed.

This is a perspective review of medicinal plants useful traditionally for women's healthcare in countries like India. Medicinal plants have a significant role in women's healthcare in many rural areas. Plants with therapeutic efficacious observations have historically been used as a starting point in the development of new drugs, and modern pharmaceuticals have been derived from them. A review about the therapeutic effectiveness, safety and best use of herbals in day to day practice to get rid of many diseases adds value to making use of herbals in this context. Kitchen remedies are the easy access for women for their cost effective health care. Many of the dietary health practices by women reflect their health consciousness. Herbal remedies include medicinal herbs and ayurveda herbal remedies for common disorders among women such as urinary tract infection, pubertal changes, post-menopausal syndrome, hot flushes, menopause, poly cystic ovarian syndrome, bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, infertility, delayed labor, low breast milk production, abortion and other female disorders.
