drinking per occasion, unlike Latinas who are usually abstinent or low-level drinkers 14 and U.S.-born Latinos have higher rates of alcohol abuse than foreign-born Latinos. 15 Yet, to our knowledge, there have been no studies testing interventions to reduce heavy drinking among aging Latinos, particularly aging day laborers. Of the more than 40 randomized trials examining interventions to reduce heavy drinking among younger adults in primary care sites, 16 only one targeted Mexican-Americans, 17 and three targeted older, primarily White adults. 18,19,20 We conducted semi-structured interviews to understand unhealthy alcohol use behaviors in socially disadvantaged, middle-aged and older Latino day laborers. We asked questions to explore their beliefs about the consequences of their alcohol use and what, if anything, would motivate them to change their drinking habits in order to identify elements for a culturally-and age-appropriate intervention. Methods This study used a grounded theory approach to explore how views of drinking behaviors were socially constructed by Latino day laborers. We used semi-structured interviews which can be especially effective in revealing the emotional and the symbolic meanings of drinking and its consequences that are not detected in typical survey approaches. 21

In Arkansas, a parent is only required to pay child support until the child turns eighteen or graduates from high school. Given the rising college tuition expenses and the increasing necessity for Post-Secondary Education to earn a living, the statute should be amended to extend a parent’s obligation further, to aid their child’s entry into college. In the past, exceptions have been made when a child had a severe handicap that justified further support. Recently, some states have required continued child support to help with the cost of tuition. For example, North Dakota issued a list of factors that could justify continuing child support that focused on financial difficulties rather than handicapping conditions. Missouri allowed continued child support as long as the child maintained steady enrollment in college. Also, various court cases compelled New Jersey to add college tuition to its acceptable factors for extending child support. Such changes in the Child Support Statutes will be necessary in order for Arkansas to maintain an educated workforce.
