Many countries face multiple challenges arising from rapid degradation of critical natural resources, and many other environmental constraints. Unsustainable increase in the pressure on available resources owing to a rapidly burgeoning human population. Since the launch of the first Meteorological Satellite in 1960, satellite remote sensing has emerged to be a cost-effective method for conducting time-series, large-scale observations of the Earth's systems. Satellite images can be used to map the entire world and to generate a number of global datasets needed for various thematic applications. This publication directly addresses these issues by focus- ing on a number of “hot spots” (i.e., locations that have undergone very rapid environmental change) by using state-of-the-art remote sensing and spatial data integration techniques to analyze and document these changes over a 30-year period (1972–2001). The hotspots cover major and diverse themes across the world, ranging from for...
Methods of continuous monitoring of volcanic clouds from the ground are discussed, including NIR monitoring of volcanic aerosols, high temperature anomalies, and vegetation using an appropriate filter set and CCD camera. A combination of satellite and ground-based remote sensing techniques is effective for understanding various volcanic phenomena.

The 2011 eruption of Shinmoedake, Japan, deposited tephra across Miyazaki prefecture impacting both urban and rural environments. We provide an overview of the impacts, management and recovery of a modern city, infrastructure networks and a diverse agricultural region following this moderate sized explosive eruption, focusing on four key sectors. Cleanup of tephra was time consuming, physically demanding and costly for residents, businesses and municipal authorities. The agricultural sector sustained large initial impacts with smothering, loading and abrasion of crops, soils and greenhouses. However, extreme concerns at the time of the eruption were not realised, with farming operations experiencing limited long-term effects. There were few disruptions to electrical networks due to resilient insulator design, a successful cleaning program, relatively coarse tephra and dry conditions. Cancellations and delays occurred on three rail lines resulting primarily from mechanical failure of track switches and loss of electrical contact between train wheels and tracks. Both residents and organisations exhibited high levels of adaptive capacity in response to the event and utilised regional and national networks to obtain information on past events and recovery strategies. The combination of relatively short eruption duration, well resourced and coordinated organisations and resilient infrastructure networks contributed to a strong recovery.

This bibliography, which was compiled in conjunction with a review of the developmental disabilities literature focusing on interventions with challenging behavior, contains references for 151 articles from 15 journals. The bibliography, covering articles published between 1988 and 1992, updates an earlier version which covered 1976 through 1987. The articles are arranged by journal, and alphabetically by author within each journal. Each article contains an intervention designed to reduce an excess or challenging behavior by directly targeting the problem area or by teaching a replacement skill. Articles with a primary focus on training and instructional procedures were not included unless the purpose of the skill training was to reduce the occurrence of an undesirable behavior. Such liberal or relatively liberal political opposition leaders as Navalny do not represent significant danger to Putin rule. Their support among Russians and among the military and security apparatus in Russia is low. The much greater and potential challenge to Putin’s rule comes from the nationalist politicians and hardliners. They regard Putin as too moderate in his waging the war in Ukraine and in the conflict with the West. Prigozhin was one of such hardliners. Prigozhin was potentially much more dangerous to Putin during the brief armed mutiny by his Wagner mercenary company if this mutiny were to escalate into large-scale fighting in Moscow and then leading to a coup or a civil war in Russia. Putin admitted these in his statements. But Prigozhin did not intend to overthrow Putin during his mutiny. He declared that his goal was to remove the Minister of Defense and the Chief of General Staff. After Prigozhin ended the mutiny following negotiations, he largely became spent force by moving along with large part of Wagner to Belarus, which is now a de facto a Russian client state. The Wagner company became the most effective part of the Russian forces during the Russia-Ukraine war. Utkin, the Wagner military commander, used Nazi SS symbols as his signature and the name of the Hitler’s favorite composer as his nom de guerre, which became the name of the Wagner mercenary company. But Wagner, as Putin confirmed today after his previous denial, was financed and armed by the Russian government, and Prigozhin amassed his wealth by largely relying on the Russian government for contracts. So, he now does not appear to represent a significant danger to Putin’s rule.
