DR. H. B. DANESH (www.hbdanesh.org) My professional life as a psychiatrist and a university professor, as well as a university president, is divided into two distinct but interrelated periods. During the first period of thirty years (1964-1993) I taught and practiced psychiatry in the United States and Canada with focus on marriage and family, violence and its prevention, death and dying, and peace psychology. The second period of 23 years thus far (1994-2017) has been devoted to education for peace, leadership for peace, and peaceful conflict resolution. Community is usually defined as an integrated, cohesive, and homogenous social entity where the interests of individual and group coincide. 1 As such, throughout history and in all parts of the world there have been various communities giving their members a sense of identity, belonging, and exclusivity. However, in the modern world with its ease of travel, high level of mobility, increasingly heterogeneous composition, and the worldencompassing social media, many communities have lost their cohesion and solidarity. These modern communities are more a collection of individuals with their personal, diverse, and often conflicting interests, rather than a unified body of individuals whose personal and group interests coincide. As a consequence, human relationships in within these communities are tenuous and transitory. Many recent technological innovations such as the Internet and social media (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, etc.), are used to connect people with one another by creating pseudocommunities, at once connected and disconnected, communicative and restrained, open and inaccessible, true and false, good and bad, reasonable and irrational, inclusive and exclusive.

Both mechanisms are accompanied by anxiety and an urge to escape or attack. The individual's lifestyle, which is the result of interaction between his innate qualities and life experiences, determines whether he will attempt to deal with threats, his fear and/or anger, and the resulting anxiety in an objective or pathological manner. This formulation underscores the need to learn methods of coping with anger and fear from early childhood, so that they do not develop into pathological behavior patterns.

They are power oriented, tend to have dichotomous conceptions, have emotional and intellectual rigidity and submit easily to authoritarian forces. The adolescents in such families are deprived of their basic needs for stability, flexibility and guidance. Consequently they feel frustrated and angry. Their anger manifests itself in various forms. A large percentage of these adolescents adopt their parents' attitudes and develop similar authoritarian personality characteristics. The second group are those who experience considerable conflict and tend to become aggressive and hostile in their interpersonal relationships. STill, there are adolescents who become withdrawn, depressed and apathetic and display great difficulty in dealing effectively with the ordinary demands of their lives. The author reports on a nomadic tribe having two distinctive societies, as far as aggression and violence are concerned. The roots of this divergence are studied and its direct relationship to the introduction of a new frame of reference, in regard to violence, to one portion of the tribe is demonstrated. Some of the characteristics of this new frame of reference, the Baha'i faith, are elaborated upon.

Religion is in disrepute in our times. It is variably seen as a cause of conflicts and wars, as a... more Religion is in disrepute in our times. It is variably seen as a cause of conflicts and wars, as a body of illogical and superstitious beliefs and practices, as a refuge for the weak and the unaccomplished, as a bastion of male supremacy and control of the masses, as a repository of unscientific and superstitions beliefs and practices, and as a relic of the past. From one perspective, all these critical views of religion are accurate. However, a dispassionate, objective review of the origins, teachings, and accomplishments of the main religions of the world reveals that every race and group of people has a religious and spiritual orientation and history. All religions address physical, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of human nature and prescribe moral and ethical principles that govern human relationships and conduct. All the universal codes of moral and ethical conduct, as put forward by the main religions of the world, are in fundamental agreement. All religions concur that life is sacred; that human life is a process of actualization of our inherent potential qualities of body, mind, and spirit; and that the main purpose of religion is to bring meaning, direction, harmony, cooperation, beauty, and civility to the life of the individual and society alike. The examples of the lives of the Founders of the major religions of the world are outstanding unique testimonies to the fundamental nobility, integrity, universality, and unity of their teachings. This paper offers an integrative perspective on the phenomenon of religion, its progressive nature commensurate with the ever-evolving collective development of humanity, and its fundamental harmony with science. The paper also analyses the main reasons for the decline of religion and its misguided applications. In its analysis of the nature and purpose of religion, the paper draws heavily from the teachings of the Baha’i Faith.

Human needs theories propose that all humans have certain basic universal needs and that when these need are not met conflict is likely to occur. Abraham Maslow proposed a hierarchy of needs beginning with the need for food, water, and shelter followed by the need for safety and security, then belonging or love, selfesteem and, finally, personal fulfillment and self-actualization. Later in his life proposed self-transcendence as a need above self-actualization in the hierarchy of needs.

This paper provides a nascent developmental model of conflict resolution and explores how such a ... more This paper provides a nascent developmental model of conflict resolution and explores how such a model challenges theorists and practitioners in the field of conflict resolution to engage with the concept of unity. The developmental model states that the ways in which human beings understand, approach, and attempt to resolve conflicts can be analogized to the developmental stages of infancy, childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Further, the model argues that conflict resolution can occur in four modes-S-Mode (Self-Centered); A-Mode (Authoritarian); P-Mode (Power Struggle); and C-Mode (Consultative Mode). Each of these modes corresponds to a particular nature of conflict resolution which, respectively, may be survival based, force based, power based, or unity based. The authors suggest that the C-Mode remains largely unexplored, and that conflict resolution is primarily constructed and understood today according to the dynamics of the A-Mode and P-Mode. The key to exploring the C-Mode is to analyze the concept of unity and its implications for both conflict resolution theory and practice.

In this article, the author describes the nature and dynamics of the culture of healing and the p... more In this article, the author describes the nature and dynamics of the culture of healing and the prerequisites for its creation. The concept of the culture of healing emerged over the course of 7 years of implementation of the Education for Peace (EFP) Program in over 100 primary and secondary schools in the ethnically divided Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). The process of change from conflict-based to peace-based ways of thinking and behaving in this multiethnic society, slowly and painfully emerging from a devastating civil war, is described and the dynamics of interface between a culture of healing and individual psychological processes are described. In the culture of healing, health is defined as a state of organic unity—wholeness, equilibrium, balance, and harmony—and healing as the process of creating unity in all aspects of individual and community life. At the core of this process is the essential transformation from conflict-based to unity-based worldviews—ideas, attitudes, relationships, and practices. The author describes and analyzes the empirical and research findings of the EFP-BiH project and its relevance to the currently high level of global interethnic discord and conflict. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

This paper proposes the integrative theory of peace (ITP) and briefly outlines the education for ... more This paper proposes the integrative theory of peace (ITP) and briefly outlines the education for peace curriculum (EFP) developed on the basis of this theory. ITP is based on the concept that peace is, at once, a psychological, social, political, ethical and spiritual state with its expressions in intrapersonal, interpersonal, intergroup, international, and global areas of human life. The theory holds that all human states of being, including peace, are shaped by our worldview-our view of reality, human nature, purpose of life and human relationships. Four prerequisites for effective peace education-unity-based worldview, culture of healing, culture of peace and peace-oriented curriculum-are discussed. The paper supports the conceptual elements of the ITP by drawing from the existing body of research on peace education and the EFP experience in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) where, since 2000, some 112 BiH schools with almost 80,000 students, along with their parents and teachers, have begun to systematically introduce the principles and practices of EFP into the curriculum and operation of their respective schools.

This article presents the conceptual foundations of the Education for Peace (EFP) integrative cur... more This article presents the conceptual foundations of the Education for Peace (EFP) integrative curriculum, reviews its contents, and briefly describes its impact on students, teachers, staff and parents/guardians in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The curriculum was developed in 2000, first employed in six pilot schools and then implemented in 112 primary and secondary schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as in a few schools in North America, thus far involving thousands of educators and tens of thousands of students. The curriculum is being published in nine volumes covering core aspects of peace education. This article reviews the curriculum's comprehensive and inclusive pedagogical approaches and unique conceptual formulation, which defines conflict as the absence of unity and unity as the main prerequisite for peace. The curriculum integrates insights from a wide range of disciplines on peace and education, including education, peace studies, conflict resolution, political science, law, religion, sociology, psychology and history. Within this integrative approach, each volume addresses one or more aspects of peace and peace education, drawing from the latest developments in the field and from lessons learned in the implementation of the EFP program. The final part of the article includes several first-hand statements attesting the efficacy of the EFP program.

In the culture of healing, health is defined as a state of organic unity—wholeness, equilibrium, balance, and harmony—and healing as the process of creating unity in all aspects of individual and community life. At the core of this process is the essential transformation from conflict-based to unity-based worldviews—ideas, attitudes, relationships, and practices. The author describes and analyzes the empirical and research findings of the EFP-BiH project and its relevance to the currently high level of global interethnic discord and conflict. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

This paper proposes the integrative theory of peace (ITP) and briefly outlines the education for ... more This paper proposes the integrative theory of peace (ITP) and briefly outlines the education for peace curriculum (EFP) developed on the basis of this theory. ITP is based on the concept that peace is, at once, a psychological, social, political, ethical and spiritual state with its expressions in intrapersonal, interpersonal, intergroup, international, and global areas of human life. The theory holds that all human states of being, including peace, are shaped by our worldview-our view of reality, human nature, purpose of life and human relationships. Four prerequisites for effective peace education-unity-based worldview, culture of healing, culture of peace and peace-oriented curriculum-are discussed. The paper supports the conceptual elements of the ITP by drawing from the existing body of research on peace education and the EFP experience in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) where, since 2000, some 112 BiH schools with almost 80,000 students, along with their parents and teachers, have begun to systematically introduce the principles and practices of EFP into the curriculum and operation of their respective schools.

This article presents the conceptual foundations of the Education for Peace (EFP) integrative cur... more This article presents the conceptual foundations of the Education for Peace (EFP) integrative curriculum, reviews its contents, and briefly describes its impact on students, teachers, staff and parents/guardians in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The curriculum was developed in 2000, first employed in six pilot schools and then implemented in 112 primary and secondary schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as in a few schools in North America, thus far involving thousands of educators and tens of thousands of students. The curriculum is being published in nine volumes covering core aspects of peace education. This article reviews the curriculum's comprehensive and inclusive pedagogical approaches and unique conceptual formulation, which defines conflict as the absence of unity and unity as the main prerequisite for peace. The curriculum integrates insights from a wide range of disciplines on peace and education, including education, peace studies, conflict resolution, political science, law, religion, sociology, psychology and history. Within this integrative approach, each volume addresses one or more aspects of peace and peace education, drawing from the latest developments in the field and from lessons learned in the implementation of the EFP program. The final part of the article includes several first-hand statements attesting the efficacy of the EFP program.

This paper is a revised version of a keynote at the “Science of Morality Conference” held at the ... more This paper is a revised version of a keynote at the “Science of Morality Conference” held at the Royal College of Physicians, London, U.K., 8–9 February 2002. The aim of this presentation is to put forward a unitary view of ethics based on the harmony of science and religion. I will briefly review a few of the powerful arguments about the issues of human nature and ethics put forward by science, followed by a summary review of the current thinking about relationship between science and religion. Finally, I propose an integrative and developmental approach regarding relationship of science, religion, and ethics.
