India, being a mega-diverse country enjoys almost all types of vegetation with great floral diversity. Among its floral wealth, the diversity of orchids plays an important role in both economical and medicinal aspects. Orchids, belonging to the family Orchidaceae exhibit an incredible range of diversity in size, shape and colour of their flowers. They are used in various aspects of life but less information is documented on their medicinal potential. Therefore, an attempt has been made to study the ethnobotanical values of orchid species in selected states of India (Odisha, Jharkhand, Kerala and Manipur). The results revealed that about 20 species of orchid are commonly used as medicinal agent. Present study highlights the importance of orchid species for formulation of drugs.

O rchids are the most attractive and diverse group among monocots in angiosperms. They are widely cultivated for their beautiful flowers, mainly used in decoration, floral arrangements and gardening, but very less for their medicinal properties. The very common drugs of Ayurveda Jīvantī and Rāsnā are orchids, which are used in ayurvedic drug preparation from the past centuries. [1] Dendrobium nobile, Gastrodia elata, Bletilla striata, etc., are used in Chinese medicines. [2] The total number of orchids present in India is around 1229, out of which 523 species reported from Sikkim and 620 species from Arunachal Pradesh. [3] Today, nearly 50 varieties of orchids are widely used in different systems of medicine. Some of the species like Vanda roxburghii, Orchis latifolia, D. nobile have been already documented for their proven medicinal values. [4] The major chemical ABSTRACT Background: Orchids are well-known for decorative and aromatic values than its medicinal properties. Jīvantī, Jīvaka, R. s. abhaka, Rāsnā, Mānakanda, Pañcagula are used in Ayurveda are said to be orchids. There are 50 species of orchids in medicine. Sikkim has identified 523 species of wild orchids so far. Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the folklore medicinal use of orchids in Sikkim. Materials and Methods: To assess the traditional medicinal uses of orchid species, close contacts were made with native people particularly, traditional healers, religious leaders, nursery growers and villagers of Sikkim. The information was gathered with the help of the questionnaire and personal interviews with various knowledgeable respondents during the field visit in between August 2009 and December 2011. Results and Conclusion: We found that 36 species of orchids are used as medicines for different purposes of health. The botanical and ayurvedic name, phenology, parts used and medicinal uses of 36 orchids are presented in this paper along with its local distribution.

Background: The present study is an attempt to survey and document the less known or new ethno-medicinal uses of some orchids from Kashmir Himalaya. The ethnic knowledge can provide an insight for further research in pharmacology. Aims: The present investigation has been undertaken to collect base line information on ethno-medicinal importance of some orchid species traditionally used in this part of the world. Methods and Material: To collect the base line information regarding the traditional medicinal uses of different orchid species, interactions, personal interviews were carried out with local people, herbal healers (Hakims), traditional knowledge holders, shepherds and nomads. The orchid specimens collected from different areas were properly processed and herbarium specimen of each species was deposited at Kashmir University Herbarium (KASH). Results: The present study revealed that 7 orchid species are used in traditional medicine in Kashmir Himalaya. These orchid species are used to treat 24 types of different diseases. For particular diseases more than one orchid species is used to cure. Whole herb, tubers and rhizomes are the main part/parts to treat different types of diseases. Conclusion: The present study revealed that in Kashmir Himalaya 7 orchid species are used ethno-medicinally to treat different diseases. Total of 24 diseases are cured by these orchid species.

The traditional therapeutic uses of some indigenous orchids of Bangladesh are described in this paper. Terrestrial (11) and epiphytic (18) orchids, 29 in total, are used by Bangladeshi rural and tribal people for the treatment of nearly 45 different diseases and ailments. Roots, tubers, pseudobulbs, stems, leaves and even whole plants are used. Some herbal preparations have miraculous curative properties. Unfortunately, these preparations have not typically been subjected to the precise scientific clarification and standardization which are consequently required for clinical implementations. Some of the orchids are endangered due to over-exploitation and habitat destruction. Conservation strategies for orchids and further pharmacological studies on traditional medicines are suggested.

Application of traditional knowledge for the utilization of natural products, particularly of plant origin, has gained importance in the past several decades. For the tribal people of different parts of India, there is limited alternative to herbal medicines, which they have used for time immemorial. Along with other medicinal plants, orchids are considered to be an important source of herbal medicine. Orchids are among the most diverse of the flowering plant families, with over 181 genera and 1229 species specific to India. Orchids, which are well known for their floriculture value, are also used for curing several diseases. Due to over-exploitation for medicinal use and for the cutflower trade, many orchids have become either rare or endangered. This review attempts to summarize the use of micropropagation to conserve Indian orchids of medicinal significance.
