What does the Bible say about Alcohol? Methodology & Overview of Works: www.fitforfaith.ca/overview | Sources are linked within the PDF document. All Rights Reserved.
Criswell Theological Review, 2008
A brief biblical defense of the moderate use of alcohol.
This paper identifies and classifies the range of biblical theologies of alcohol, and identifies the hermeneutical differences that lead to these varied conclusions. It finds there are two functions of grape-based beverages in Israel: firstly celebration, blessing, joy, abundance, fellowship with God and with each other; secondly excess, drunkenness, adverse physical effects, poor decision making and a metaphor for God's wrath. Christian approaches to alcohol vary widely across time, geography, culture, denomination and social context. They have historically been classified into three categories: prohibitionist, abstentionist and moderationist, however putting all views that are accepting of alcohol under the banner moderationist does not suitably reflect material differences among pro-alcohol scholars. Therefore a fourth category is proposed, classified celebrationist.

Many Christians regard the Bible as a normative book; meaning that they require the bible to give them all answers pertaining life issues. This study attempts to find the position of the bible especially the New Testament on beer/wine drinking since it is an area of controversy in the Anglican Diocese of Harare. Those from the church’s evangelical wing condemn beer drinking as sinful, while those from the Anglo-catholic wing support beer drinking. So who is right and who is wrong? So the court of appeal is the bible since all of them are claiming that their answers are from this holy book. The study has established that the bible does not explicitly condemn beer/wine drinking; but drunkenness. Moderate drinking is not condemned but abuse of alcohol. It also emerged that the majority of Christians do not know the difference between moderate drinking and drunkenness. These Christians are interpreting verses that condemn drunkenness as to mean beer/wine drinking. It is therefore recommended that the church should give people proper interpretative tools. The church should also refrain from using hyperbolic language when it comes to matters of faith. This creates another sin of hypocrisy.
The Nagaland Baptist Church Council and its allies perceived that the best strategy to keep the Naga society at bay from the attack of alcoholism was to avoid its free-flow into the state. The beautiful dream of the Naga churches was to see its people living in absolute peace possible only through a balanced vertical and horizontal relationship. Forlornly, this beautiful dream was shattered after 25 years long existence of the prohibition Act failed miserably. This unsuccessful prohibition furnished the cradle of split opinions. With and out of confusion and perplexity, people began to challenge and question the prohibition Act blatantly. Since then, the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act of 1989 has become the bone of contention. In order to get their opinion supported either ‘for’ or ‘against’ the Act, the writers and utterers daringly pointed out the biblical references relating to alcohol with less caution to the core message of the passages. Some Biblical questions like, “Is it a sin to drink alcohol? Can Christians drink alcohol? Is the Bible against alcohol?” comes with a desperate attempt to substantiate one’s own opinion on the Act resulting to the gibberish misinterpretation and misconception of the biblical truth. Therefore, it is an urgent need to give heed to the scripture to provide a concrete answer to these queries. Perhaps, no other religious book has given rise to such a plethora of interpretations about alcohol and its effects. Despite the multitude of alternative suggestions, no other interpretative scheme has gained a consensus solution to set the final decision till today. However, the Bible cannot be understood as favoring both the concepts. Misinterpretation of the Bible will lead us to wrong conclusions.
Sin, Suffering, and the Problem of Evil, edited by Blazenka Scheuer and David Willgren Davage, 2021
In this study, I want to explore the links between drinking, judgement, and punishment in a selection of Hebrew Bible texts. I am particularly interested in the perceived connection in these texts between drinking and destiny and the notion that drinking has a transformative effect on the drinker.
In this course we will explore the intriguing and manifold roles that wine and beer have played in the history of human civilization from their first appearance to our days, with a particular focus on the various places these two alcoholic beverages have occupied in the practices and speculations of Jews, Christians, and Muslims over the centuries. In line with the interdisciplinary nature of the field of Religious Studies, we will combine anthropological, sociological, and psychological theories and methods with historical and textual analysis as we embark upon this intoxicating exploration.
