Be able to identify and name the tissues, the cells, fibers, matrix, basement membrane Know the basic function of each cell, tissue ; examples of where the tissue is found (as given in lecture) Know all terms listed in lecture. You will be tested on the microscope slides studied in the lab, photos in the textbook and lab manual, PAL, and my Tissues lecture and Tissues 1, 2, 3 *** note: slides are prepared from real organs. Most organs are made of a few different tissues. The entire slide will not be the tissue you are looking for. Make sure you find the correct tissue first. Slide examples in italics may very depending on availability.
The body is highly composed of different kinds of tissues. Some are organized, while some are not. Histology is the study of tissues and their structural components. When studying tissues, it helps to figure out the relationship between the structure of a tissue and its functions. Tissues are classified accordingly to their distinctive shape, size and arrangement. The objectives of this given exercise, is to differentiate the four principal kinds of tissues and give their functions respectively. Also, to construe the main types of different tissues and their specific location for epithelial tissues and connective tissues. To compare the three types of muscle tissue and purposively perceive the use of nervous tissue. Lastly to distinguish the difference between neurons and glial cells. Microscope is used for the better viewing or magnification of tissues structure. It enables clear descriptive structural observations of the provided specimens. By the use of the given prepared slides, the students will be able to understand all the expected objectives on this exercise. In this report, the students will be going to tackle the major characteristics of each tissue and examine various types of each tissue under the microscope.
This lab experiment shows the students that it is very important to know the tools and apparatus that will be used to perform an experiment. Throughout this lab, students will be able to know the differences between a compound microscope and a dissecting microscope. Furthermore, they will also learn the importance of the microscope, how to handle a microscope, learn its function and how to operate properly. Students will also be able to learn how to calibrate the measurement to ensure correct measurement and calculation of sample with a microscope. Lastly, students will examine and observe Extracellular Matrices (ECM) which they will be supplied with eight (8) prepared slides which is Elastic tissue, Lily anther mature pollen, Skin thin human, Human blood smear, Mammal intestine injected sections, Hyaline cartilage, Compact bone and Chick 48 hour. On this last task, students will examine all the prepared slides under the best magnification in order to show details of the ECM and label the samples in order to help students understand and appreciate how tissue types combine to form organs.
