The list of the Azorean arthropods is based on all known published literature (see a list of the published literature till 1992 in Vieira & Borges 1993; Borges & Vieira 1994), as well as on some unpublished data. However, the depth of the bibliographic coverage varies from order to order, and we are aware that it is incomplete for some groups (e.g. Crustacea). Concerning the unpublished data, several sources were checked, namely the recent work performed under Project BALA “Biodiversity of the Arthropods from the Laurisilva of the Azores” (e.g. Borges et al. 2005; http://www.nrel.colostate.edu/IBOY/europe_ ap.html#BALA), and also Project INTERFRUTA (see http://www.angra.uac.pt/interfruta). The list includes many new records for individual islands of the Azores or for the whole archipelago, but no reference is made concerning those new findings. All information concerning taxonomic notes, new records and references to localities will be published elsewhere (Borges & Wunderlich, in prep. for Araneae; Mahnert & Borges in prep. for Pseudoscorpiones; Ilharco et al. in prep. for Hemiptera; Karsholt & Vieira in prep. for Lepidoptera; Borges et al. in prep. for all the remaining taxa). With regard to Lepidoptera our ongoing studies reveal that it will be necessary to concentrate on a more detailed revision (see Karsholt & Vieira in prep.) in order to eliminate the misidentifications, mislabelling and other errors that have occurred over the years. All species of doubtful identification were removed from the main list and are included in Appendix 1. With few exceptions (e.g. Aphidoidea), the classification used for most arthropod groups follows mainly the recent list of European terrestrial species, project FAUNA EUROPAEA (http:/ /www.faunaeur.org). Higher taxa are listed in a sequence inferred to be from the less to the more derived groups, with closely related taxa placed near to one another. The families and genera are listed in alphabetical sequence. Synonyms, that 170 include true synonyms but also typographical errors, are presented in the index referring to the valid name. For some groups we followed other sources: Acari-Oribatida is based on the recently published list of world Acari-Oribatida (Subías 2004); and Araneae follow the “World Spider Catalog” by Norman Platnick (http://research.amnh.org/ entomology/spiders/catalog/INTRO1.html). For the distribution of all species and subspecies in the nine Azorean islands we use the following abbreviations: COR – Corvo; FLO – Flores; FAI – Faial; PIC – Pico; GRA – Graciosa; SJG – São Jorge; TER – Terceira; SMG – São Miguel; SMR – Santa Maria. When no information concerning island occurrence was available only archipelago occurrence is given (AZ). In most cases it corresponds to old records, as well as to references to the Azores as found in “Fauna Europaea” with no indication to any literature supporting these findings (e.g. Crustacea; Acari – Ixodida; Hemiptera - Diaspididae). The first column (D) gives the colonization status of each species as follows: END – Azorean endemic species, i.e. those that occur only in the Azores, as a result of either speciation events (neo-endemics) or extinction of the mainland populations (palaeo-endemics); MAC – Macaronesian endemic species, i.e. species only known in Macaronesia (the Azores, Madeira, the Canaries, the Cape Verde Islands); n – Native species, i.e. species which arrived by long-distance dispersal in the Azores and which are also known in other archipelagos and on continents. Most species classified as MAC are also native; i – Introduced species, are those believed to be in the archipelago as a result of human activities, some of them having a cosmopolitan distribution. Information concerning the native and introduced status of a species is given only for those species for which there is published information or information which is backed by the coordinators. na literatura entomológica açoreana, são apresentados no índice desta obra, estando associados aos nomes válidos. 171 Bibliografia (References) Borges, P.A.V., Aguiar, C., Amaral, J., Amorim, I.R., André, G., Arraiol, A., Baz A., Dinis, F., Enghoff, H., Gaspar, C., Ilharco, F., Mahnert, V., Melo, C., Pereira, F., Quartau, J.A., Ribeiro, S., Ribes, J., Serrano, A.R.M., Sousa, A.B., Strassen, R.Z., Vieira, L., Vieira, V., Vitorino, A. & Wunderlich, J.
