After the skin suffers an injury, pro-inflammatory factors and blood cells aggregate at the site, initiating the coagulation cascade for clot formation and angiogenesis. Activated platelets, via 5-HTR2A (5-hydroxytryptamine receptor-2A) receptors, secrete serotonin, which is implicated in the pro-inflammatory response to acute injury, especially in the recruitment of neutrophils and proliferation of lymphocytes, thus playing a role important role in the inflammatory stage of wound healing. Abnormalities in the different stages of the healing process cause its impairment, by inducing metabolic changes, in gene expression and, consequently, in the phenotype. Therefore, genetic alterations, especially in platelet 5-HTR2A receptors, impair the initial processes of tissue repair with a consequent decrease in the inflammatory response and detriment to the continuity of the healing process, regardless of the triggering factor. Polymorphisms in the serotonin receptor gene (5-HTR2A) are associated with several platelet disorders by affecting the serotonergic system and, among them, the 102T-C polymorphism can lead to molecular changes in the effectiveness of tissue repair control, with implications for wound healing. This review highlights the need for a new look to broaden the horizons of molecular understanding of the tissue repair and wound healing.

The term "Plains Tribal" was first used by the colonial rulers in Assam to lump together a diverse set of people defined in semi-geographical and semi-sociological terms. It was taken up and crafted into an identity in the competitive politics of late colonial Assam by representatives of tribal groups who successfully welded this diverse set into a unified political and social category. This article traces the emergence of the "Plains Tribal" in the political map of Assam and shows how it came to be defined partly in opposition to other competing social categories and partly in terms of internal markers of identity.

The Mexican Hairless dog, or Xoloitzcuintle, is a breed characterised by a sparse hair coat and a severe oligodontia. This phenotype is a consequence of Canine Ectodermal Dysplasia (CED) caused by a mutation on the FoxI3 autosomal gene. First accounts of hairless dogs in Mexico are dated to the 16 th century CE, according to the historical record, but pre-Hispanic dog skeletons presenting missing and abnormally shaped teeth have been interpreted as earlier evidence of hairless dogs. However, several questions remain unanswered regarding the timing of apparition of this phenotype and its relationship with modern hairless breeds. In this paper, we review the morphological characteristics of potential hairless dogs and we apply ancient mitochondrial DNA analyses along with radiocarbon dating to eight archaeological dog mandibles from Tizayuca, Basin of Mexico, presenting anomalies that could be attributed to a CED. The archaeological dogs were dated between 1620 and 370 years BP. Among these eight individuals, we identify four different mitochondrial haplotypes including two novel haplotypes. The dogs from the Basin of Mexico display a very high genetic diversity and continuity from the Classic to the Postclassic. However, our attempt at amplifying the FoxI3 mutation was unsuccessful. Finally, we show that some haplotypes are present in both archaeological dogs and modern hairless breeds, perhaps reflecting their maternal ancestry.
Storica Special Issue on Jairus Banaji, 2023
This article builds upon Banaji’s recovery of the unfree- dom of capitalist relations in conditions of debt bondage to foreground the violence inherent in capitalism, violence that is not "extra-economic" but fundamental to economic life. This article also examines how reintegrating violence into our understanding of capitalist relations can help us understand how caste relations are coded or "framed out" of what is called "the economy" in capitalist societies.
Gender a výzkum, 2017
How to assess quality has become one of the central concerns for contemporary research, not least because of the proliferation of research assessment systems around the globe. Concomitant with this has been the growing attention to factors that compromise the credibility of assessment, especially gender, ethnic, racial and geopolitical bias. In this paper I analyse how lab leaders and research managers in the natural sciences specifi cally construct excellence and relatedly the demands of the research profession, and how gender bias plays out in these imaginaries. The material for the study comes primarily from two highly successful public research institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences and specifi cally from individual and group interviews with lab leaders and research managers on topics of research governance, assessment, and quality. The focus is on the natural sciences because the discipline has driven the introduction of research assessment in the country as well as research and innovation reforms more broadly since the new millennium. Building on the distinction between the logic of choice and the logic of care developed by Annemarie Mol (2008), I explore the limits of individual choice for conceiving excellence and the gendered outcomes it produces.
