The paper aims to identify the main aspects in design of catamarans for inland navigation, but not limited to, and to present some approaches related to this aspects. The catamarans have some consistent advantages against conventional monohull: larger deck area, better transverse stability and in general improved behaviour in waves. As consequence the catamarans have gained ground in a wide range of applications: inland/maritime passenger ships, passenger or car/passenger ferries, inland cargo ships and even Navy ships. The main design aspects discussed in this material are: hydrodynamic efficiency, hull and deck structure design, passenger/cargo space arrangement, machinery and installations aspects, intact and damage stability aspects. The methods presented here, related with the above aspects, are based on international ship design and construction rules, results of structure design investigations and towing tank experiments developed in other paperwork. Based on the author's...

The design of any vessel is a series of compromises which trade off one property for another. Catamarans are particularly appropriate in the size range from 45 to 170 feet, where they offer many of the advantages of considerably longer conventional vessels in a shorter, wider, shallower draft, fuel efficient package. Designing and using modern catamarans is lot like designing and using aircraft where strength/weight considerations are crucial. Weight control is essential for good and safe performance offshore. Blind application of monohull design ideas has lead to the creation of a number of needlessly heavy (and thus expensive) catamarans with poor sea keeping. Fuel load takes the place of science cargo as the primary weight to be hauled, which in turn requires larger engines to achieve the design speed and range, which requires more fuel and so on. The design spiral then diverges from well-proven wholesome, catamaran design practice. This paper signifies the importance of catamaran hull form benefits as a research vessel and the reasons for selecting this hull form. Study is also done on the spacing between the two hulls with symmetrical demihull and asymmetrical demihull. Resistance, working deck space, operating cost options are the primary factors in determining catamaran hull form as the most efficient out of the comparison between monohull and catamaran. This paper signifies the effect of bulbous bow in reducing the resistance components and increasing the volume of displacement for a given set of constraints.

Multihull due to a couple of advantages has been the topic of extensive research work in naval architecture. In this study, a series of investigation of fishing vessel to save fuel energy was carried out at ITS. Two types of ship models, monohull (round bilge and hard chine) and catamaran, a boat with two hulls (symmetrical and asymmetrical) were developed. Four models were produced physically and numerically, tested (towing tank) and simulated numerically (CFD code). The results of the two approaches indicated that the catamaran mode might have drag (resistance) smaller than those of monohull at the same displacement. A layout of catamaran fishing vessel, proposed here, indicates the freedom of setting the deck equipments for fishing vessel.

The proper definition of the main geometric coefficients and the hull forms of a passenger catamaran must be carried out from the early design stage, due to its strong impact on the resistance, propulsion and the generated wave pattern. This is a primary concern especially in fragile environments, such as the Venice Lagoon, where waves increase erosion phenomena. In this work, a two-phase methodology for the definition of the hull forms of a passenger catamaran, based on both a parametric and CFD analysis, is presented. In the first phase, systematic series data are used to parametrically evaluate possible combinations of main hull dimensions (breadth of the demi hull, deadrise angle), selecting the best one to fit a specific operative scenario (minimisation of required energy). Then, after the validation of mesh parameters with a benchmark hull, the best hull forms are assessed through CFD simulations. To study the interference between the two hulls and select the proper configurat...
Catamaran as a surface vessel was not significantly improved from the mid of the last century. Conventional single-hull surface vessels were satisfying more or less sufficiently all sailing requirements. After complex theoretical and practical researches it was established that in relation to the conventional passenger vessels, catamarans offer many advantages related to the space, surface and stability in maritime exploitation. Because of his high rate of stability, catamarans were established as a very convenient means for passenger transportation. Catamaran's high rate of stability satisfy sailing requirements in the case of small angles of vessel's heel, but in the case of greater heel, catamaran's stability is too high resulting in a short, fast rolling periods and extremely expressed inconvenience. To solve the problem SWATH catamarans was introduced. Generally, SWATH catamaran present surface vessels with reduced water line surface. Basic operational principle is that by the reduction of water plane area, where the most quantity of wave energy is concentrated, vessel generates a large amount of stability even in the case of rough sea conditions and high vessel's speed movement. With this principle SWATH catamarans place the most amount of displacement under the water line, where the impact of wave energy is minor. Paper is aimed to compare technical and technological advantages and disadvantages of the both type of surface vessels and to present specific procedures of transformation process from conventional catamaran surface vessel to the SWATH catamaran.

The catamaran resistance is an important hydrodynamic performance that must be studied starting with the initial design stage. In this paper, both theoretical and experimental analysis of a Danube Delta passenger catamaran resistance was developed. The method proposed by Sahoo et al. for catamaran with rounded bilge was applied to estimate the ship resistance. Experimental model tests were performed in the Towing Tank of “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati, in order to determine the optimal distance between the hulls of the catamaran. Important differences were observed between the theoretical and experimental results.

The wake wash from passing ships can cause environmental damage. The wake wash is an important issue for naval architects and shipbuilders in concentrating on more environmentally friendly designs. This paper presents results of a parametric study of catamaran hull form to obtain low wake wash hull form configurations or low speed inland waterway boats. The study uses a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation, and model experiments were carried out for validation of the CFD software setup. The study concentrates on the asymmetric catamaran hull form. The investigation is conducted on two configurations of hull form; Flat Side Inward (FSI) and Flat Side Outward (FSO) configurations. The investigation is conducted on a hull form with a Length to Beam (L/B) ratio of 12.2, 15.2 and 18.3 and a Separation to Length (S/L) ratio of 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4. The results based on wave height criteria at various longitudinal cuts have shown that the FSO configuration has a lower wake wash compared with the FSI configuration. Considering L/B and S/L ratios, hull forms with a larger separation or higher L/B ratios produce lower wave heights.

This study investigates and compares methods to quantify color changes in quartzite rocks after repeated heating episodes. We collected quartzite samples from the southern Cape coast, South Africa, and heated them three times in experimental fires. We recorded the colors of the samples before and after heating using visual observation, Munsell color notations, Munsell color notations converted to RGB values, and digital image analysis. The methods are also tested on potentially heated and potentially unheated archaeological samples from Klasies River main site, South Africa. It was possible to distinguish between unheated and repeatedly experimentally heated quartzite using visual observation and Munsell color notation, but a large proportion of repeatedly heated samples appeared unaffected by the heat. The digitally-captured color values best discriminated color changes after heating. Color values of repeatedly heated experimental samples overlap with color values of potentially heated archaeological samples.
