Study materials for centuries were made available in print. But of late, economic concerns and uncertain futures have contributed to a crisis of confidence in print. Sustainability is becoming a key criteria in the pedagogical arena too. This article reports on a study which attempted to explore the possibility of sustainable learning using WhatsApp in an English language Bachelor of Education (BEd) course. WhatApp is an extremely popular communication medium among teacher trainees. However little research is known on the type of interactions that occur when teachers are involved in using it a Blended learning mode. The investigator-cum teacher educator, using a mixed method research, collected data both through informal interviews and focus group discussion. The study reveals that the different interactions between the learners and the teacher educator helped particularly in refining learner perspective of select content of the BEd syllabus. It also found that the collaborative mode helped build learning bonds between the teacher trainees slowly transforming them into a community of learners. The study underscores the possibility of familiarizing teacher trainees with the scope of utilizing WhatsApp for sustainable learning.

Drawing from social learning theory, this study aims to investigate the experiences of third-year students regarding the use of WhatsApp group chat for teaching and learning. This is premised during a COVID-19 lockdown context at a rural South African university, wherein opportunities to learn socially from each other are created as students interact with their peers, educators and facilitators, and learning materials, objects and activities are collaboratively co-created, shared and disseminated through WhatsApp groups. Data were collected through focus group interview of eight third-year students registered for a Bachelor of Education in Senior Phase and FET degree majoring in English and Life Orientation. The study found that WhatsApp allows students to communicate, collaborate and encourage in remote learning to disseminate knowledge as a way of improving their academic performance. The results provide an insight into how WhatsApp plays a significant role in learning English in the development of reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, which consequently improves students’ academic literacy and interpersonal skills. The findings of this study further reveal a disparity of network connectivity, accessibility and electricity between those residing in the urban and rural areas.
English teachers always seek new and interesting approaches to teach English which is relevant to today’s digital native students. WA has been suggested by many to be used in ESL classrooms. Therefore, this paper reports a study on the use of Whatsapp Application (WA) features (text, image and video) as an instructional tool beyond a regular classroom, students’ perception towards the use of WA in teaching and the benefits and drawbacks of using WA in promoting English language learning. A mix-method research design was utilized to obtain detailed information about the use of WA out of the confined classroom. The instruments include observations on WA exchanged messages, semi-structured interviews and survey questionnaire. The outcomes of the study suggest an instructional tool which can be used “in the real world” and help lecturers to understand the prospective benefits of WA to enhance the teaching and learning process. Keywords— WhatsApp; social network application; tertiary institution; instructional tool; English language learning

WhatsApp groups are considered useful for creating and supporting virtual communities. This mixed method case study explores the patterns that emerged when we used WhatsApp to create a community of learning during the multimodal presentation of a postgraduate course in research proposal writing. Three questions drive the study: (1) What kinds of messages were sent? (2) Who participated and how? (3) How did the learners experience the use of WhatsApp in support of the community of learning? Data were collected during the presentation of a five-evening proposal writing workshop that was conducted using Zoom, WhatsApp, and YouTube as communication platforms. To answer the first question, all WhatsApp messages were analysed through both manual (individual) and automated (meta) content analysis. The third question was answered by analysing students’ responses to the end-of session online questionnaire that was administered via Google Forms. Results indicate that many messages were admini...
