This engaging and often personal history is about an important topic: the creation, maintenance, and ongoing evolution of historical memory in the imagining of colonial Rhodesia and independent Zimbabwe. One is reminded of Simon Schama's Dead Certainties: Unwarranted Speculations (1991) as Charumbira (Univ. of Texas) walks readers through the (re) creation of two nationalist pillars: Cecil Rhodes and his allegory, Nehanda-Charwe, the female spirit medium who inspired resistance during the 1896-1897 war against occupation by the Pioneer Column of the British South African Company. Charumbira would likely be flattered by the comparison to Schama, but unlike him, she is an insider of sorts: a Zimbabwean born in the late colonial era and trained as a historian of gender and memory in the West, who, like many Zimbabweans, also works there. Charumbira explores how white settlers redefined Rhodes(ia) over time to maintain their power and how African nationalists found in Nehanda-Charwe a way to link their political agendas to ordinary Zimbabweans' desire to recover their land from white occupiers. Drawing on archival sources, oral histories, and a range of scholarship, Charumbira makes a persuasive, cautionary case for always questioning received wisdom. Summing Up: HHH Highly recommended. Extinct megafaunal mammals in the Americas are often linked to seed-dispersal mutualisms with large-fruiting tree species, but large-fruiting species in Europe and Asia have received far less attention. Several species of arboreal Maloideae (apples and pears) and Prunoideae (plums and peaches) evolved large fruits starting around nine million years ago, primarily in Eurasia. As evolutionary adaptations for seed dispersal by animals, the size, high sugar content, and bright colorful visual displays of ripeness suggest that mutualism with megafaunal mammals facilitated the evolutionary change. There has been little discussion as to which animals were likely candidate(s) on the late Miocene landscape of Eurasia. We argue that several possible dispersers could have consumed the large fruits, with endozoochoric dispersal usually relying on guilds of species. During the Pleistocene and Holocene, the dispersal guild likely included ursids, equids, and elephantids. During the late Miocene, large primates were likely also among the members of this guild, and the potential of a long-held mutualism between the ape and apple clades merits further discussion. If primates were a driving factor in the evolution of this large-fruit seed-dispersal system, it would represent an example of seed-dispersal-based mutualism with hominids millions of years prior to crop domestication or the development of cultural practices, such as farming.

At the cusp of the 20th and 21st centuries, a Russian philologist, later a political scientist focusing on geopolitical theory, Vadim Tsymbursky, developed a theory positing three ‘strategic cycles’ in Russian-Western relations beginning from 1726 and lasting to the late 20th century. Tsymbursky’s theory and cycles are not configured regarding Russian (or Western) domestic politically-related developments. In this article the idea of Tsymbursky’s theory of cycles is applied to Russian-Western relations, taking into account Russian domestic political developments; it defines four completed cycles and the beginning of a fifth one during the return to dominance of the ‘security vigilance’ culture under Russian President Vladimir Putin. This study attempts to demonstrate a confluence of Western powers’ actions in their relations with Russia and its people, on the one hand, and Western influences on the internal Russian political struggle for power, on the other hand, all shaping the relational cycle in Russian-Western relations.
This paper explores the necessity of reworking teacher roles and learner ownership of classroom processes. With the re-tooling of roles, one may provide contexts for strategy training and task-based approaches. An overview of research is integrated with the practical issues of classroom discourse in secondary and tertiary language learning.
