Augmented wastage remover [AWARE]

2013, 2013 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference (GHTC)

This paper proposes an innovative, Ecofriendly, simply operated system for cleaning of hazardous and light weight wastage materials on rail roads, which is equipped with cylinders of a typical Internal Combustion engine and centrifugal fans with mechanical gear trains [1] [2]. With simple mechanical actions, we can remove hazardous solid wastes like plastic things and other garbage. In present, human resources are used to remove these wastes from rail roads. To overcome the disadvantages of present system and to protect our environment, we use a pneumatic system here with the least number of moving parts which are very efficient. We can extend its application to any level. Our system has two operations. Both operations are simultaneous and give extra power to the equipment.

INTRODUCTION Developing countries like India, Syria, Bangkok, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other 39 countries are more polluted than any other countries in the world [3]. Based on the statistics of Pollution Control Board, India, there are 670 million people living in polluted places in India itself [4]. These countries are denser and have more means of transportation like railroads and road transports. According to the RCRA report (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act), the majority of railroad transportation and motor freight facilities are considered to be the largest hazardous waste generators. The other forms of waste managements like treatment, storage and disposal facilities (TSDFs) are processed under strict regulations [5]. According to the statistics, solid wastes collected from streets and railroads increased considerably especially paper is the largest single part, by both weight and volume, of solid wastes. A report says that every year there is more than 50 million tons of paper wastes disposed of at landfill sites [6]. Collection and transportation of wastes take more than $6 billion in the United States, which is one of the developed countries. The governments of developing countries are not able to take much action to clean and develop these areas and it is almost impossible to provide equipment like vacuum cleaners in slums and railway tracks because of financial crisis. It creates such big impacts on health like illness, physiological abnormalities, disorder, physical irregularities, mutational changes in the genes, cancer and in extreme cases; it may lead to even death of those organisms that live in railroad areas [7]. View publication stats A) Types of Wastes and Waste Generators: Sources that produce wastes are called waste generators. With reference to [5], waste generators can be classified into three. 1. 2. 3. Large Quantity Generators (LQGs) Small Quantity Generators (SQGs) Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generators (CESQGs) Here railroads and stations come under LQGs. Based on the statistics, there are 3980 Metric Tons of wastes are generated by human everyday directly on the railroads [6]. These wastes are classified into four [5]. 1. 2. 3. 4. Ignitability Corrosivity Reactivity Toxicity As stated above, to remove these wastes government uses human resources in railroads and stations. And it is impossible for them to clean roads that are far from stations. Unfortunately, children in these countries would love to play in dumps and polluted tracks [8]. In addition, wastes on the railroads unexpectedly create loss of domestic animals. Animals like buffalos, elephants come to railroads to eat food wastes and get hurt by trains. The death rate of animals increased notably in the period, 2006-2011, because of these wastes. Almost 67 animals died, including 62 elephants and a lion. It makes high impact on environment and further increases pollution which is very hard to clean [6]. It makes the problem very serious. This system gives solution to the problems mentioned above. In this project a simple two-stroke engine technology is used to collect waste without using any form of fuel energy. We fix it in a specially designed car which is running with the train. For a powerful operation, we fix a mechanical compressor in the previous car. As explained in abstract, this system has two operations. One is slow speed operation which operates both pistons and centrifugal fans. Another one is a high speed operation which operates centrifugal fans alone at high rpm. The complete construction of AWARE is shown below as a sketch diagram.
