Ilmu Falak merupakan relasi harmonis agama dan sains. Dikotomi agama dan sains adalah hasil dari imperialisme Barat dan kuatnya paradigma positifistik. Dikotomi ini tidak sesuai dengan ajaran Islam, karena di dalamnya memuat ajaran tentang ibadah yang sangat berkaitan dengan fenomena alam terutama yang menyangkut waktu-waktu ibadah seperti waktu salat, puasa Ramadan, salat 'idain dan ibadah haji. This paper aims to explore the history of the glory of the development of astronomy before the Prophet Muhammad was sent to be an Apostle. Celestial science reached its golden age in the Abbasid period, where many astronomers were born, this is inseparable from the role of previous civilizations. Recorded several civilizations that existed before the prophet Muhammad were sent including some findings that contributed greatly to the development of astronomy, namely, civilization in the Mesopotamia region, Ancient Egypt and even the Arabs before the arrival of Islam. Unification of the Islamic calendar was much needed and is a major requirement for Muslims today in the running of worship. Uniformity in to worship and celebrate Islamic holy days is something that has been long awaited. An expectation of the Islamic calendar is determining who has the certainty that a better and more organized for various purposes. However, it is in conflict with a different concept of the new moon from several groups paradigm respectively, both from the perspective of science and religion. Hilāl is one of the main sources in the preparation of the Islamic calendar. Currently, the definition of the new moon is very diverse. Which definition is used for the initial determination new month of hijriyah, both from the perspective of astronomy or fiqh, or combination of them. Therefore, the article is devoted to the redefinition of the concept of the new moon from the perspective of science and fiqh, that synergy occurs between fiqh and the astronomical new moon to determine new month of Islam. So that the unity of the Islamic calendar can be realized well. [] Penyatuan kalender Islam sangat dibutuhkan dan merupakan syarat utama bagi umat Islam saat ini dalam menjalankan ibadah. Harapan atas kalender Islam adalah sebuah kalender yang memiliki kepastian (akurasi) lebih baik dan lebih terorganisir untuk berbagai keperluan. Namun dalam realitas terdapat perbedaan pandangan tentang konsep bulan baru oleh beberapa kelompok, baik dari perspektif ilmu pengetahuan maupun agama. Hilāl adalah salah satu sumber utama dalam penyusunan kalender Islam. Saat ini definisi bulan baru sangat beragam, padahal definisi inilah yang digunakan untuk penentuan awal bulan baru Hijriyah, baik dari sudut pandang fikih astronomi atau kombinasi dari mereka. Artikel ini difokuskan untuk mendefinisikan kembali konsep bulan baru dari sudut pandang ilmu pengetahuan (astronomi) dan fikih. Sinergi antara fikih dan astronomi sebagai pendekatan untuk menentukan bulan baru Islam perlu diupayakan sebagai sebuah ikhtiar untuk me-rumuskan kesatuan kalender Islam.

Masyarakat tradisional Nias dulu dalam pembagian dan penamaan waktu mereka mengacu pada aktivitas sehari-hari seperti beternak, bertani, kerja domestik dan fenomena alam lainnya. Penamaan waktu ini mereka sebut sebagai penanggalan harian yaitu Fanötöi ginötö. Selain kalender Masehi dan kalender Fanötöi ginötö masyarakat Nias mempunyai kalender periode senggang tahunan digunakan untuk kegiatan pertanian dan kegiatan adat istiadat suku Nias yang mengacu pada peredaran Bintang Orion atau Bintang Sara Wangahalö. The basis of calendar unification or mat} la' constitutes one of the most significant issues relating to the unification effort of Hijra calendar. The popular basis of unification, so far, is based on the union of regional and global mat} la'. The division of mat} la' to regional and global mat} la' is now no longer accurate because it can not accommodate the Hijra calendar pooling ideas in the Islamic world. This paper discusses one of the leading International astronomy thought, Mohammad Shawkat Odeh on varieties of mat} la' unification. He divided the principle of mat} la' unification in to five forms: unification of global mat} la' (one mat} la' for the whole world); the unity of mat} la' in the regions corresponding visibility of hilal; the unity of mat} la' in a similar area of visibility of hilal; the unity of zonal/partial mat} la'; and the unity of local mat} la'. Odeh's thought on the various divisions of mat} la' constitutes new thinking on the concept mat} la' astronomical calculations. He also has presented more detailed thoughts on the division of mat} la' rather than the others.
