Maps present distinctive epistemic risks. No set of representational conventions or epistemic standards can eliminate these risks. There is no such thing as an objective or value-free map; rather, the production of any map is governed by a variety of value-driven choices. While the value-ladenness of scientific reasoning is familiar to philosophers of science from the literature on inductive risk, visual representations of data such as maps pose epistemic risks that are distinct from (but just as ineliminable as) inductive risks. Three of these are aesthetic risk, categorization risk, and simplification risk. With respect to each, maps that are accurate according to recognizable representational conventions not only fail to avoid these risks but may even present heightened risk. Unconventional maps that make their distinctive, value-laden perspective clear may offer special epistemic benefits.

Language Resources and Evaluation

Here we present an expanded version of bdproto, a database comprising phonological inventory data from 257 ancient and reconstructed languages. These data were extracted from historical linguistic reconstructions and brought together into a single unified, normalized, accessible, and Unicode-compliant language resource. This dataset is publicly available and we aim to engage language scientists doing research on language change and language evolution. Furthermore, we identify a hitherto undiscussed temporal bias that complicates the simple comparison of ancient and reconstructed languages with present-day languages. En las páginas que siguen en este número de Grand Place no se aspira a presentar un diagnóstico comprehensivo de la situación del Estado de Bienestar, ni mucho menos a señalar cuál debe ser el camino de la socialdemocracia, pero sí se discuten algunos elementos que están presentes en los debates académicos y de algunos actores políticos españoles y extranjeros sobre estos temas.

Floods and their problems show an increasing indication when rainfall is high. Data from BNPB shows that floods, landslides and tornadoes contributed to the total disasters in Indonesia in a decade. The existence of an early warning flood disaster can help evacuate before a disaster strikes. The system requires a water level detector as the basic data for determining flood predictions. In order to get the water level value, a touch water method can be used using electrodes or without touching the water with the help of pressure sensors, ultrasonic and imaging. Each method has advantages over the other. In this study, the effectivity and accuracy of detecting water levels were investigated using 3 methods: the direct touch of water through nickel wire, buoys with encoder, and pressure sensors.
