Wecreated an application specialized in prosodic tutoring, called the Prosodic Module(PM). The PM is composed,of two different sets of Learning Activities, the first one dealing with prosodic problems at word syllabic level, the second one dealing with prosodic problems ,at phonological ,phrase and utterance level. The PM is able to detect significant deviations from a master's word/ phrase/ utterance

In this paper we will be concerned with the role played by prosody in language learning and by the speech technology already available as commercial product or as prototype, capable to cope with the task of helping language learner in improving their knowledge of a second language from the prosodic point of view. The paper has been divided into two separate sections: Section One, dealing with Rhythm and all related topics; Section Two dealing with Intonation. In the Introduction we will argue that the use of ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition) as Teaching Aid should be under-utilized and should be targeted to narrowly focused spoken exercises, disallowing open-ended dialogues, in order to ensure consistency of evaluation. In order to discuss the scientific foundations of prosodic analysis we will present data related to English and Italian and make comparisons to clarify the issues at hand. In this context, we will also present the Prosodic Module of a courseware for computer-assisted foreign language learning called SLIM -an acronym for Multimedia Interactive Linguistic Software, developed at the University of Venice . The Prosodic Module has been created in order to deal with the problem of improving a student's performance both in the perception and production of prosodic aspects of spoken language activities. It is composed of two different sets of Learning Activities, the first one dealing with phonetic and prosodic problems at the word level and at the syllable level; the second one dealing with prosodic aspects at the phonological phrase and utterance suprasegmental level. The main goal of Prosodic Activities is to ensure consistent and pedagogically sound feedback to the student intending to improve his/her pronunciation in a foreign language.

The Prosodic Module of SLIM has been created in order to solve problems related to segmental and suprasegmental features of spoken English in a courseware for computerassisted foreign language learning called SLIM -an acronym for Multimedia Interactive Linguistic Software, developed at the University of Venice. It is composed of two different sets of Learning Activities, the first one dealing with phonetic and prosodic problems at word segmental level, the second one dealing with prosodic problems at utterance suprasegmental level. The main goal of Prosodic Activities is to ensure feed-back to the student intending to improve his/her pronunciation in a foreign language. The programme works by comparing two signals, the master and the student ones, where the master has been previously edited by a human tutor inserting orthographic syllabic information at segmentation marks automatically computed by the underlying acoustic segmenter called Prosodics(see 1). When a student, after listening and evaluating the master signal tries to mimic the original utterance or word the system assigns a score and, if needed spots a mistake and indicates what it consists of. The elements of comparison are constituted by the acoustic correlates of prosodic features such as intonational contour, sentence accent and word stress, rhythm and duration at word and sentence level.
Work in the last decade shows, that Computer-Assisted Pronunciation Teaching (CAPT) systems are useful, flexible tools for giving pronunciation instructions and evaluating at subject's speech. This paper describes a newly developed CAPT system that intends to address appropriate teaching of such supra-segmental parameters as intonation, stress and speech rhythm. Two modules are implemented: (1) intonation and stress teaching, and (2) rhythm teaching using dynamic time warping. The automatic feedback of the system is evaluated by using speech samples from hard of hearing children. The automatic assessment methods give automatic feedback that is consistent with the subjective decisions of teachers. Visual feedback was also proposed which is based on the dynamic time warping algorithm and gives simple and understandable visualization of the intonation and rhythm of the subject's utterance.

This paper presents a computer-assisted learning system of English prosody for French students. Our main goal is to provide learners with relevant feedback, based upon speech signal transformations and guided by a comparison between French and English prosodies. Considering that teachers should be given the possibility of customizing their courses, the main functions of WinSnoori for editing and modifying the signals has been ported in the form of active X controls. We present here these functions, a set of exercices conceived for the acquisition of English prosody, and give a concrete example illustrating our strategy.

The study aimed at exploring the effectiveness of computer software (Praat) in helping students to acquire prosodic features of English language. Forty participants including male and female university students, ranging the age from 18 to 35 years old, were assigned into two experimental control groups. Then both groups were given a pre-test before the research sessions. The control group received (Non-CALL approach) while the experimental group was through CALL approach to pirate software. Finally, both groups sat for post-test at the end of treatment. A t-test analysis was used and findings revealed that the difference between two groups was significant in terms of learning prosodic features through Praat software (p<.05). The results also showed that learners that practiced stress and intonation through CALL approach were more successful than the students who were taught through traditional method.

In this article, we investigate the propagation of an intrinsic (not environmental) perturbation along the DNA chain. In particular, the conditions were sought so that a perturbation, in addition to moving in a coherent and complete manner, remained enclosed within a DNA fragment for a life time similar to those of biological interest of hundreds of picoseconds or in the time scale of nanoseconds. The conditions of closure of these pieces of DNA and the conditions of prolongation of the life time of the perturbation have allowed us to introduce the concept of time-island for the base-pairs sequences with these characteristics. The amount of such time-islands in human chromosomes and their coding parts has been calculated, and their uneven distribution has been highlighted. Finally, we study pieces of DNA made up of numerous replicas, as in the Huntington’s disease. These systems with a number of replicas of the tens of units are, in fact, time-islands, albeit different from the simple ones already studied. By increasing the number of replicas, however, these time-islands tend to disappear because the coherence of the movement of the perturbation within them is lost. In this perspective, Huntington’s disease, and other similar diseases, could be interpreted as the loss of a time-island.

The study analyzed crop farmers and herdsmen conflicts in Girei Local Government Area, Adamawa State, Nigeria. Purposive and random sampling techniques were used to select two out of ten wards in the Local Government Area and 96 (crop farmers = 64, herdsmen = 32) respondents respectively. A questionnaire was used to collect information from respondents. The results from the study revealed that 62.5% of the respondents were below the age of 50 years the two groups exhibited differing occupational characteristics; most farmers (62.5%) were small-scale operators (1-3 hectares), most herdsmen (81.2%) operated on a relatively higher scale (more than 60 heads of cattle). Destruction of crops and crop residues by cattle and burning of rangelands and blockage of stock routes by crop farmers were the major causes of conflict. Repercussions of conflicts included loss of income (100.0%), loss of yield (100.0%) and stored product (64.0%) among crop farmers. Herdsmen reported minimal losses of t...
